Thus it is said, according to the self-system of the *Kosa*, the eye sees forms in a way that it can see, but it is not the case that the entire eye sees. When it is associated with consciousness, then it sees, otherwise it cannot see. The commentary says so. Therefore, the Vaibhashika school believes that the consciousness arising from the eye and so on, their types are different, and there is no aspect of subtle particles, the root consciousness grasps by seeing its own characteristics, and when grasping form, it is simultaneous, that is, the past and the future do not do the work of generating consciousness. When the causes produce the results, the dharmas that exist in the cause itself, and the dharmas that help the cause to produce the results, are called conditions. That is, the causal condition, the dominant condition, the objective condition, and the immediate condition. Among them, the causal condition is like when the eye and the object form rely on each other to generate eye consciousness, the causal condition is the four great elements and the derived elements inherent in the eye organ itself, which act as the cause, so that the eye consciousness can be fully and completely generated. The dominant condition is the eye organ itself, and its dominant condition is for seeing form. The objective condition is the form itself that appears as color and shape, because it is the object of consciousness. The immediate condition is the momentary consciousness of the arising of eye consciousness, because its second moment arises without interruption by other dharmas. Thus, there is no object of result that is not generated by these four conditions. The subtle particles of the organ cannot generate consciousness with one subtle particle of the object, because the basis and object of the five consciousnesses are accumulations. The three, eye, mind, and ear, generate consciousness without touching the object; the remaining three generate consciousness by touching the subtle particles of the object, which are equal to the number of subtle particles of the organ. So it is said. Also, there are six causes, namely: efficient cause, co-occurring cause, similar cause, corresponding cause, pervasive cause, and ripening cause. All conditioned phenomena other than oneself are the efficient cause of it. Those dharmas that are mutually the result are the co-occurring cause. That is, the four great elements, or the dharmas that follow the mind, or the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, are the basis of the nature, and they are also the self of that nature. Those dharmas that are similar --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

are the causes of equal flow. Virtuous dharmas of the same kind are virtuous to each other, and so are afflicted dharmas. Minds and mental factors that have the same basis are coexistent causes. The fifth is the cause of afflicted dharmas. The sixth is only non-virtuous and contaminated virtuous dharmas. Therefore, the first two are coextensive with conditioned phenomena. Regarding the results, the five results of maturation, dominance, similar cause, agent, and separation are explained, and the last one is a nominal result. The first two are the results of similar causes. The second is the first result of the cause. The third is the result of equal causes and pervasive causes. The fourth is the result of co-occurring causes and coexistent causes. Therefore, the result of dominance and the result of agency are coextensive with conditioned phenomena. The first of the four conditions, except for the efficient cause, is all efficient causes. Except for the final mind of an Arhat, all minds and mental factors are immediate conditions. All dharmas are objective conditions, even if they are not conditioned. All efficient causes are called dominant conditions. Regarding the difference between the Realist and Sautrāntika schools, the Commentary on the Abhidharmakośa says: 'The Sautrāntikas say, what is the use of space existing? Relying on the eye and form to generate eye consciousness, who is the viewer? What is the act of viewing?' This is just without an agent, just dharma and cause and effect. In order to establish terminology, it is said that the eye sees through intention. Consciousness also cognizes, so do not be attached to this.' Therefore, their own tenet is: the directly seen forms, etc., are apprehended by consciousness. The eye and other faculties are not the objects of experience. Why? Because the eye and other consciousnesses arise together with the aspects of the object, and the faculties cannot be objects because they are inanimate. Thus, when people look at glass that has been changed in color by paint, both the glass and the color are taken by the eye. The glass is taken directly, and the color is taken as an image. Therefore, the two appearances taken by people, the direct appearance, is only the appearance of consciousness. The basis of consciousness appearing as color and shape is independent, composed of atoms, without gaps, and is of an intangible nature, therefore it is said to be dualistic apprehension. As Āryadeva said: 'What is seen is not the object of the senses.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
