Therefore, 'Consciousness arises with aspects.' The Sautrāntikas (rnam par rig pa smra ba) also do not deny the direct perception of meaning consciousness. If one thinks that this contradicts their assertion that external objects do not exist, it does not, because they believe that 'the nature of inner consciousness, whatever appears as external, that is the meaning.' However, they say, 'Seeing what appears as blue, external objects do not actually exist.' Therefore, they say that there is no external object apart from consciousness. The mind itself appears as form, etc., and establishing the names 'external' and 'meaning' should not be prevented, because they also acknowledge these as their external sources (skye mched, twelve sources). Since sense consciousness is non-conceptual and harmless, it is considered an entering consciousness. The Madhyamikas (dbu ma pa) believe that through the harmless six senses, whatever is cognized by the world is considered the truth of the world itself. Therefore, when establishing their names, these two types of direct perception are also explained. Mental direct perception (yid kyi mngon sum) is: the immediately preceding moment of the form taken by sense direct perception is the object, the sense direct perception that takes the form is the co-emergent condition, its immediately preceding moment is the mental faculty, and from this, it arises as the immediately preceding condition and the dominant condition. As long as the function of sense consciousness has not ceased, there is only sense direct perception. The statement 'sense consciousness has a continuum' is unreasonable, because it is impossible for a second sense consciousness to arise immediately after one sense consciousness has arisen. Because, 'the immediately preceding moment when the six senses cease, whatever consciousness, that is the mind.' Therefore, its immediately preceding moment is the mental faculty, and then, because the aggregation of causes for the arising of mental direct perception is complete in number, it will arise. Because, 'For an incomplete cause, what result can prevent it?' Even though the immediately preceding moment of mental direct perception is also the mind, because other causes are incomplete, mental direct perception does not arise, and the corresponding sense consciousness will arise after that, and that mind becomes its immediately preceding condition. All sense consciousnesses are simultaneous with their own objects, and only the second moment of that object is simultaneous with mental direct perception. The statement 'mental direct perception arises continuously,' the Sautrāntikas believe that 'arising, ceasing, abiding,' where 'abiding' refers to the continuum, so the end of the sense consciousness abiding and its immediately preceding moment have the same meaning. All of these are from a close perspective, established on one continuum. Self-awareness direct perception (rang rig mngon sum) is: whatever is established as being known is also established as having experience of it, and things that have been experienced and --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That 'self-awareness' and 'self-experience' are actually the same thing, and this 'awareness' is not other than that, therefore, both the Sutra and Mind-Only schools consider it their own direct experience. However, the Vaibhashika and Madhyamaka schools do not think so. Regarding the extended meaning of the result of valid cognition, the discussion of establishing 'self-awareness' is the view of the former two schools. The latter two schools do not acknowledge self-awareness, but they do acknowledge 'self-knowing,' which is the so-called 'individual discernment,' considering 'individual discernment' to be individual 'awareness.' Although the nature of 'awareness' is experience, beings cannot perceive it because arising and ceasing are rapid. For example, although the state of a spark is only the size of a mustard seed, it appears as a fire wheel when rotated quickly. This 'awareness' exists in worldly meditation, therefore, those with a little wisdom say that it is 'inward-directed' 'awareness.' Therefore, if it is said to be 'awareness,' it does not necessarily mean manifest 'self-awareness'; but if it is said to be 'awareness,' then it necessarily possesses 'self-knowing.' Just as, if it is said to be 'dharma,' it does not necessarily mean 'dharmata'; but if it is 'dharma,' then it necessarily possesses 'dharmata.' Furthermore, in the Ratnagotravibhāga it says: 'The self-knowing of all minds and mental factors...' If all 'awareness' is 'self-knowing,' then adding the word 'of' becomes meaningless. In the self-commentary of the Moksha Sutra it says: 'If the self-awareness of desire and so on is manifest, then the awareness of discrimination will also become manifest.' This is true, because discrimination is also considered self-awareness. In reality, it is not so, because it is discrimination. It itself is the object of desire, and even if it is not manifest, it is called 'self-awareness,' meaning their manifestation. 'Yogic direct perception' refers to the wisdom of noble Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Buddhas, which are all included in the Truth of the Path. Bodhisattvas, like the two Shravaka disciples, subdued the armies of Mara under the Bodhi tree, and attained Buddhahood in thirty-four moments from the peak of the fourth dhyana. The realization during this period is the realization of the noble Bodhisattva. The Madhyamaka and Mind-Only schools enter the path through conventional bodhicitta, and they are very swift. They attain Buddhahood in three great asamkhyeya kalpas, the first asamkhyeya kalpa being the stage of adhimukticarya, the second asamkhyeya kalpa being the seven impure bhumis, and the third asamkhyeya kalpa being the three pure bhumis. Then, in Akanistha, they attain Buddhahood in the support of the complete enjoyment body, and manifest the nirmanakaya Buddhahood in Jambudvipa. As the scripture says: 'The Samyaksambuddha attains Buddhahood there, the Nirmanakaya manifests Buddhahood here.' Akanistha is also called the abode of the Great Ishvara, which transcends the three realms. The Ratnakuta Sutra extensively describes this. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
