As stated in the Sutra Pitaka, Bodhisattvas (Bodhisattva, Sanskrit, beings striving for enlightenment) vow to benefit countless beings in countless worlds, but even after countless eons (Kalpa, Sanskrit, unit of time) they may not attain Buddhahood because they have not completed the perfect and mature practice. This is like Samantabhadra (Samantabhadra, Sanskrit, the all-good one) and Manjushri (Manjushri, Sanskrit, gentle glory). The Madhyamaka (Madhyamaka, Sanskrit, the Middle Way) school analyzes the uncommon aspects, which is the realization of the Buddha (Buddha, Sanskrit, the awakened one). Therefore, realizing Suchness (Tathata, Sanskrit, thusness) is called becoming a Buddha. Because Suchness cannot be expressed in words, its realm cannot be described. Since it cannot be described, how can we establish the realization of it? Therefore, the so-called 'so-and-so became a Buddha' is just a worldly saying. In reality, Suchness is beyond all conceptual elaboration, a state of peaceful Nirvana (Nirvana, Sanskrit, cessation), and is free from all attachments and claims. Third, summarizing the essence through the application of language: In the context of establishing direct perception (Pratyaksha, Sanskrit, प्रत्यक्ष, प्रत्यक्ष, direct perception), as a topic, non-conceptual and non-erroneous consciousness is the definition of direct perception, and dividing it into four types is reasonable for all Buddhist schools, because in the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha (Shakyamuni Buddha, Sanskrit, sage of the Shakya clan), direct perception is established in this way. Apparent Direct Perception: Second, apparent direct perception is divided into two types: conceptual apparent direct perception and non-conceptual apparent direct perception. The first includes three types: conceptual consciousness that relies on symbols, speculates on other things, and has hidden objects. The first case, as the text says: 'conventional consciousness,' refers to clinging to universals (Samanya, Sanskrit, generality), etc. The second case, as the text says: 'delusion,' refers to mistaking a mirage (Mirage, English, illusory appearance) for water, etc., and the 'inference' mentioned in the text refers to the mind that clings to signs with three characteristics. The third case, as the text says: 'arising from inference,' refers to inferential topics; and 'memory,' refers to remembering things seen before; and 'manifest desire,' refers to the desire for food, etc. In short, there are six types of conceptual apparent direct perception. The second case, as the text says: 'related to apparent direct perception and dizziness,' refers to a single non-conceptual confused consciousness. In short, there are seven types. Here, 'there are four types of apparent direct perception, three types of conceptual consciousness, arising from dependence, and one type of non-conceptual consciousness.' And 'there are two types of apparent direct perception.' Therefore, all consciousnesses other than true direct perception are apparent direct perceptions. Those not explicitly stated belong to conventional consciousness. Second, regarding the classification of results and the results of clear realization, it is divided into three parts: briefly explaining through association with the treatise, elaborating through detailed analysis, and summarizing the essence through the application of language. First, as the text says: 'understanding through action' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, they consider it as the fruit of pramana (means of valid cognition). They establish it as pramana itself, but it is not without function. As shown in the Commentary on Pramana, in order to establish the distinction between pramana and its fruit, and to demonstrate the pramana-fruit of cognizing objects, therefore, it performs a function. As the scripture says: 'That which accomplishes all actions, not all are the fruit; whichever is the fruit, that is the accomplisher.' Furthermore, in order to establish the pramana-fruit of self-awareness, and to extensively demonstrate the accomplisher of both, the scripture says: 'At that time, since there is no other consciousness, self-consciousness should be the fruit.' The second view is that the Sautrantikas consider: 'The object is the object to be measured, the apprehended aspect is the pramana, and cognizing the object is the fruit,' or 'Similarity to the object is the pramana,' these are merely different names. The similarity of knowledge is the basis for establishment, and what is established is the object to be measured, which is the essence of experience. Therefore, both establishing and being established are the essence of the same knowledge. Through experiencing similarity to the object, definitive knowledge is considered as the knowledge that understands the meaning of the object. 'The apprehended aspect' or 'similarity to the object' refers to the knowledge that arises from the object being similar to that object, for example, the knowledge that arises from a blue object being similar to blue. This similarity is called aspect or appearance. Understanding the object through the power of similarity. What performs the establishment is the conceptual thought that arises from the power of direct perception, because direct perception itself is not conceptual thought, therefore it cannot establish the understanding of the object. Therefore, even if there exists knowledge that understands the essence of the object without being established by definitive knowledge, it is almost equivalent to non-existence. The second view is that the Cittamatrins consider: Knowledge is able to cognize the object because the object itself is the nature of knowledge, therefore there is a connection. Self-awareness is acceptable, but if it is considered that the object is external, then since there is no connection with knowledge, it cannot be cognized. The dependent arising of external phenomena, such as things seen in a dream, is like seeing only the mind itself without an external object, therefore, establishing the pramana-fruit of the Cittamatrins is true. As it appears, the apprehended aspect is the object to be measured, the apprehending aspect is the pramana, and experiencing the nature of mind etc. is the fruit, this is said in the case of admitting the existence of the object. Otherwise, self-nature is the object to be measured, the apprehending is the pramana, and the knowledge of self-nature is the fruit. For the Sautrantikas as well, there exists self-aware pramana. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
