It is like the expression 'holding a bow,' for example, like someone who accomplishes a task holding a bow, rather than analyzing the relationship with others in detail. Therefore, 'paksha' (side, aspect) refers to the 'part' that is related to the truth to be proven, just as when one corner of a cloth is burned, we say the cloth is burned. Its part is the attribute of the example. Thus, the aspect and the attribute are in accordance in the example. Moreover, the former becomes the special, and the latter becomes the thing being specialized. 'Khyappa' (pervading) means, is there only something that makes it pervade, or does only it exist to make it pervade? This indicates the relationship of accordance and opposition. 'Hetu' (reason) is reasonable, and 'linga' (sign) is what makes one understand. Making one understand is also proof, and it is understanding and remembering the association. Therefore, it is desired to understand the meaning of the interrupted sign through memory. Just like from general to specific, merely because sound is considered impermanent, it does not become a reason. Only when from that reason one understands or recognizes that sound is impermanent, it becomes a reason. If it is consistent with the present, then it is considered valid. Merely because it is considered a sign, it is called 'sign-holding mind' (rtags 'dzin sems). The difference between it and the real inference is that understanding and remembering the explanation is crucial. To show the distinction, that is the three ways. The three ways are: 'cause, how much self-nature, without which the result will not arise,' the result of which without it will not arise is the sign. Merely existing self-nature, and the essence of having an association, is like the sign of the result. By cutting off dependence on other things, the essence of merely being associated with the existence of the thing to be proven is also the self-nature sign that makes self-nature understood. 'Pramana (valid cognition) does not intervene, without which the result will not intervene,' because there is no object, so pramana does not intervene, which is non-apprehension (anupalabdhi). That is because there is no cause of self and opposite, so it is the result of preventing the term of existence. Considering the specificity of the reason, 'some non-existence is the result,' some non-apprehension of the reason, different from the former, because there is a cause of self and opposite, so some are the result of negating the term. To show certainty, 'without it, certainty will not arise.' Even for these three ways of reason, there are unestablished, opposite meanings, and errors. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To counteract fallacious reasoning, it is necessary to state (valid reasons) explicitly. As the text says: 'To counteract fallacious reasoning, it is necessary to state explicitly.' Master Dignāga explicitly stated the three aspects of correct reasoning. This is to counteract the fallacies of the unestablished (asiddha), the contradictory (viruddha), and the uncertain (anaikāntika) reasons. 'Explicit' means the certainty of the aspect of being present in the subject (pakṣadharmatva), the certainty of the aspect of concomitance (anvaya), and the certainty of the aspect of being absent from the non-subject (vyatireka). These are respectively pointed out in the Hetubindu: 'existing in the very thing to be inferred,' 'existing only in similar things,' 'existing only not in dissimilar things,' these are certain. Second, expanding the explanation through detailed analysis. Reasoning with three aspects is the definition of a valid sign. If classified, there are three types: the valid sign of effect (kārya-hetu), the valid sign of nature (svabhāva-hetu), and the valid sign of non-apprehension (anupalabdhi-hetu). Reasoning with three aspects of the effect, which is the definition of the valid sign of effect. If classified, there are the effect sign expressed in general and specific ways, the effect sign that relies on the difference of the dharma that has become its nature, and the credible effect sign. The first one, for example: in a place with smoke, there is fire, because there is smoke. In the Pramāṇasamuccaya, it says: 'If it is said to be produced by a part or to become a producer, that is not right, because it is the difference of what is produced, and it is the general form of the special sign.' If it is not expressed in a general and specific way, it is wrong, so it is not accepted. The second one, for example: sound is impermanent, because it is produced by effort. Therefore, here it also explains that the nature of the effect sign is one-sided. The third one, for example: when explaining conventional truth, giving is the cause of enjoyment, because the scripture says that giving brings enjoyment. This is the promised effect sign. Reasoning with three aspects of nature, which is the definition of the valid sign of nature. If classified, there are the reasoning that relies on other differences, the pure or unique reasoning, and the reasoning that relies on the difference of the dharma that has become its nature. To this, children make various speculations. In the Pramāṇasamuccaya, it says: 'relying on difference and pure,' or 'relying on nature, difference, difference.' In addition, adding the sign of fame, there are four types, which is understanding the sign of nature through fame. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
