For example: 'The subject (chos can, topic) is the thesis (pakṣa), because there is smoke, like a kitchen.' What is the cause of the smoke that is to be refuted? It is fire. What contradicts fire is cold touch. What is pervaded by cold touch is mist. Mist can be observed here. Observing the pervaded result that contradicts the pervading cause, for example: 'The sacrifice is the subject (pakṣa), it is not permanent, because it sometimes acts.' The special characteristic of the permanent that is to be refuted is the absence of change, which is the pervading cause. What contradicts this is having change. What is pervaded by change is action. This can be observed here. Therefore, non-apprehension is divided into three types. Although it is said this way, there are actually many types. Through the distinction between non-comprehension and comprehension, and things that contradict this, and so on. Just as it is said in the autocommentary of the *Pramāṇasamuccaya* (Compendium on Valid Cognition): 'Not comprehending this, comprehending what contradicts this, comprehending the result of contradiction,' and so on, are the modes of distinction. Third, summarizing the meaning through the combination of linguistic meanings: The subject (chos can, topic) is the thesis (pakṣa) of the self-benefit inference (svārthānumāna), it is the reason for being a standard of measurement, because it is mainly used to distinguish between things and non-things. The Aspects of Fallacious Reasoning Second, fallacious reasoning (hetvābhāsa): Fallacious reasoning is different from true reasoning (hetu). As it says in the *Pramāṇasamuccaya*: 'It does not exist on what is unestablished, it is confused by relying on both, the non-existent dharma is contradictory, how can it become the thesis?' Here, it extensively shows the exclusion of errors through the three types of reasoning (hetu). The knowledge that arises from what is considered to be correct reasoning (hetu) is fallacious inference (anumānābhāsa), which is a conceptualization that does not agree with reality. These three are, respectively: unapprehended consciousness, mistaken apprehension, and doubt. What are the errors that are excluded by the three types of reasoning (hetu)? They are the unestablished, the contradictory, and the uncertain. On the subject ( पक्ष , pakṣa, topic), the reasoning (hetu) that is not established for the debater is the characteristic of unestablished reasoning (hetu). First, the combination is explained in ten ways, but if summarized, there are two types: unestablished relative to the debater and unestablished due to doubt. The first type is further divided into what is not established for both the former and latter debaters, what is not established for the latter debater, what is not established for the former debater himself, and what is not established in one aspect. The first situation, for example: when arguing that sound is impermanent, taking 'what is seen by the eyes' as the reasoning (hetu). The second situation, for example: when arguing that trees have consciousness, taking 'dying after being peeled' as the reasoning (hetu), which is not accepted by the latter debater, the Buddhist. The third situation, for example: when arguing that happiness has no consciousness, taking 'having birth' as the reasoning (hetu). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Previously, for the opponent (the other debater), 'Samkhya' (a school of Indian philosophy) itself was not established. For example, to prove that trees have consciousness, proposing 'sleep' as a reason, but this is not established in one aspect for the previous opponent, the naked ascetics, because not all trees shrink their leaves at night. Or, like proposing 'fruit' as a reason to prove that land and other things are produced with intelligence. If someone says that this is established in dwellings and food, etc., then in that case, it is not established in one or both aspects. The second part has three aspects, that is, doubting the reason: for example, to prove 'here is or is not', proposing 'here is smoke' as a reason. This can represent the case of taking the dharma (attribute of things) to be proved and the basis of the dispute as the reason. Because the argument itself is uncertain, there is doubt about the subject (thesis), for example, to prove that there are peacocks in some places in the valley, proposing to hear the sound of peacocks as a reason. The unestablished of not being established, for example, to prove that 'I' is universally present, proposing 'all merits are observed' as a reason. Secondly, the contradictory argument refers to the argument that proves the opposite of what needs to be proved, which is the characteristic of the contradictory argument. It exists in the dissimilar side but does not exist in the similar side; or it does not exist in the similar side but exists in the dissimilar side; or it proves the self-nature of the dharma in a reversed way; or it proves the self-nature of the subject in a reversed way; or it proves the difference of the subject in a reversed way, there are five cases in total. The first case is, for example, to prove that sound is permanent, proposing 'because it is created, like space'. This argument exists in the dissimilar side such as a vase, but does not exist in the similar side. The second case is, for example, to prove that sound is permanent, proposing 'it arises immediately after effort' as a reason. It does not exist in the similar side (space), but exists in the dissimilar side (vase). For example, lightning etc. does not have this situation. The third case is, for example, to prove that eyes etc. operate for the benefit of others, proposing 'because they are accumulated, like beds and cushions'. The fourth case is, for example, to prove that land etc. are produced from causes with intelligence, proposing 'because they are dependent, like vases etc.'. The fifth case is, for example, for the practitioner of Vaisheshika (a school of Indian philosophy), to prove that 'I' has consciousness, proposing 'because it is blessed by consciousness'. For arguments that exist in both similar and dissimilar sides, or whose existence or non-existence is doubtful, is the characteristic of an uncertain argument. Since it is a doubtful argument, it is also called a residual argument. If we distinguish, for example, to prove that sound is permanent, proposing 'it is measurable' as a reason. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
