Thus it is said. Firstly, destruction (Tibetan: འཇིག་པ་, meaning: the process of disintegration and disappearance of things) is impermanent because it is conditioned, like that. Secondly, sound (Tibetan: སྒྲ་, meaning: audible sound) is impermanent because it exists, like that. Thirdly, sound is impermanent because it arises, like that. Fourthly, O, possessor of a rabbit (Tibetan: རི་བོང་ཅན་, meaning: the moon, because ancient legends say there is a rabbit on the moon), you are called the moon because you are so famous in the world, like that. The valid reason for negation with three aspects, the definition of the correct reason of non-observation (Tibetan: མ་དམིགས་པའི་རྟགས་ཡང་དག་, meaning: the correct way of reasoning that infers the non-existence of something due to the failure to observe it). If distinguished, there are two types of reasoning: non-observation of the invisible and non-observation of the observable. Firstly, the self that is permanent, singular, and independent (Tibetan: རྟག་གཅིག་རང་དབང་ཅན་གྱི་བདག་, meaning: a philosophical view that there is an eternal, singular, and autonomous 'self' or soul) does not exist because it is not cognized by valid cognition (Tibetan: ཚད་མ་, meaning: valid means of cognition, such as direct perception, inference, etc.), like that. Secondly, for the latter, there are three types of reasoning: reasoning of non-cognition or non-observation, reasoning of cognizing the opposite of that, and reasoning of cognizing the result that contradicts it. The first two can be divided into four types each by combining them from the aspects of nature, result, cause, and pervasion. The third is divided into eight types. From the perspective of combination, there are sixteen types. Firstly, the reason of non-observation of nature is: in this place free from smoke, there is no smoke because it is not observed among things that can be observed, like that. The object to be negated is smoke. Its nature is not observed here. The non-observation of the result is: the same as before, there is no unimpeded ability to produce smoke because there is no smoke, like that. The object to be negated is the result of the factors that produce smoke, which is smoke, and this is not observed here. The non-observation of the cause is: in this place free from smoke, there is no smoke because there is no fire, like that. The object to be negated is the cause of smoke, which is fire. This is not observed here. The non-observation of the pervasive is: in this place free from trees, there is no agarwood tree because there are no trees, like that. The object to be negated is the pervasion of agarwood, which is trees. This is not observed here. The above are the four distinctions of the first type. The observation of the opposite of nature is: in this place with fire, there is no cold touch because there is fire, like that. The object to be negated is the nature of cold touch, which is opposite to fire. This is not observed here. The observation of the opposite of the result is: the same as before, there is no unimpeded ability to produce cold touch because there is fire, like that. The object to be negated is the result of the factors that produce cold touch, which is cold touch. The opposite of this is fire. This is not observed here. The observation of the opposite of the cause is: with fire... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For example: 'In this place, there is no horripilation (spu zing) etc. caused by cold, because of the proximity to fire.' The cause of the negated 'horripilation' etc. is cold. The opposite of that is the characteristic of being near fire. Because that is observed here. Observing the opposite of the pervasive factor, for example: 'In this place, there is no damp touch because there is fire.' The pervasive factor of the negated damp touch is cold. The opposite of that is fire. Because that is observed here. These are the four divisions of the second case. Observing the result of the opposite nature, for example: 'In this place, there is no cold touch because there is smoke.' The opposite of the negated cold touch is fire. The result of fire is smoke. Because that is observed here. Observing the result of the opposite result, for example: 'Here, there are no unimpeded powers that are the cause of cold, because there is smoke.' The result of the causes of cold that are to be negated is cold. The opposite of that is fire. The result of fire is smoke. Because that is observed here. Observing the result of the opposite cause, for example: 'There is no person with the distinctions of horripilation etc. caused by cold here, because there is smoke.' The cause of the person with the distinctions of horripilation etc. caused by cold that is to be negated is cold. The opposite of that is fire. The result of fire is smoke. Because that is observed here. Observing the result of the opposite of the pervasive factor, for example: 'There is no damp touch here, because there is smoke.' The pervasive factor of the negated damp touch is cold. The opposite of that is fire. The result of fire is smoke. Because that is observed here. Observing the pervasion of the opposite nature, for example: 'There is no fire here, because there is damp touch.' The opposite of the nature of fire that is to be negated is cold. What is pervaded by cold is damp touch. Because that is observed here. Observing the pervasion of the opposite result, for example: 'Here, there are no unimpeded powers that are the cause of fire, because there is damp touch.' The result of the causes of fire that are to be negated is fire. The opposite of that is cold. What is pervaded by cold is damp touch. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
