Then, thinking 'let's go,' they went. Having gone, when they looked at the edge of the pond, the thought strongly arose that 'this is a jewel!' The water of the pond also appeared like the light of a jewel. Having seen that water appearing in that way, 'Emaho!,' the thought strongly entered that 'it is a jewel!' Then, one who was skilled in means and had a kind heart actually found that jewel. Monks, similarly, you who do not know the suchness of the Dharma like a jewel, that all is impermanent, all is suffering, all is without self, and all is impure. Meditating with all grasping, doing much meditation, having done much and abiding closely, all those are meaningless. Monks, therefore, like taking away pebbles and gravel from the pond, be skilled in means without wavering! Thus he spoke. Not understanding the way of ultimate emptiness, but thinking of emptiness as nothing at all, is falling into nihilism, and is similar in meaning to the outsiders, therefore it is criticized. As it says in the Ratnakuta Sutra: 'It is easy for those who see the self as Mount Meru, but not so for those with pride who see emptiness.' And as it says in the Four Hundred Verses: 'If one sees emptiness wrongly, those with little wisdom will be destroyed, like holding a snake wrongly, and like practicing mantras wrongly.' Like that. This very thing, the way of speaking with definitive meaning and benefits, is: More excellent than the middle [way] teaching that all dharmas are empty, in the end it is spoken as the definitive meaning of primordially self-arisen and clear light. Therefore, those trainees with sharp faculties realize it, and because there is no discouragement, they generate great enthusiasm for enlightenment and strive, and seeing all sentient beings as having the essence of enlightenment, they are respectful and do not have arrogance in themselves (322), and because they realize the reality without error, vast wisdom increases and there is no wrong view, and seeing themselves and sentient beings as equal, love arises, and entering into the truth of the cessation of imputation and denial, they are free from the extreme of denigrating emptiness, therefore they quickly attain Buddhahood. In the Uttaratantra it says: Like clouds, dreams, illusions, and four things

There it is said, all knowable things are empty in every way. Why is it said again here that the Buddhas have the essence of the Tathagata in sentient beings? Discouraging and despising inferior sentient beings, not grasping the right view, and abandoning the right Dharma. What are the five faults that we have, those are also spoken of in that? Thus, from hearing that, like joy and manifestation, with reverence, wisdom, prajna, and great compassion arise. For the sake of generating the five dharmas, there is no fault in that, like being without deficiency, possessing qualities, and from equal love for oneself and (323) sentient beings, Buddhahood is quickly attained. Thus it is said. This place is the creation of immeasurable roots of virtue, the taming of the senses, and those who are held by the noble spiritual friend should understand the general meaning with faith. Ordinary common people and those of the Hearer and Solitary Realizer lineages, and those who are attached to the extreme view of emptiness, are not its object. As it says in that very text: The ultimate truth of the self-born ones is to be realized only by faith. The sun's orb blazing with light cannot be seen by those without eyes. And in its commentary it says: Thus, the Tathagatagarbha of the Blessed One is not the object of those who have fallen into the view of the aggregates, and those who are extremely delighted in perverted views, and those whose minds are distracted by emptiness. Thus it is said. This Dharma gate, like the sky, is the object of self-nature purity, rare and wonderful. Whoever realizes this will attain the state of the Buddhas (324), and is skilled in the profound and vast meaning. Thus, together with the rest, the instruction on the state of mind at the time of confusion has been explained. The fourth general meaning, the way to illustrate the practice of the instructions, has three parts: binding the essence by the way the root lineage of the instructions descends, taming the continuum with the water of empowerment in the way of the instructions, and liberating by the order of the instructions leading to practice. First, from the nature of the spontaneously accomplished great perfection of the ground, with compassion in self-appearance, with awareness obtaining the four empowerments, the water of wisdom is obtained in the original complete spontaneously accomplished great perfection, with the self-arisen mind instructions self-appearing, the one who attains Buddhahood without a teacher who shows the lineage is Kuntuzangpo (Samantabhadra) becoming enlightened on the ground.
