If not, one would not be saddened by suffering, and there would be no desire or aspiration for Nirvana. Seeing the faults and merits of suffering and happiness in Samsara and Nirvana, this is possible only for those with wisdom, because it is not possible for those without wisdom. Thus it is said. The way this wisdom is empty is: the defiled dharmas that can be distinguished and separated are obscured by sudden obscurations, but because they do not stain the self-nature, they are empty. These emptinesses are empty of time, and the emptiness thought of by the mind is inconceivable. The qualities of dharmas that are indistinguishable and spontaneously accomplished are not empty, because the unconditioned nature always abides without change. As it is said: In this, there is nothing to be removed, there is nothing to be established, look at reality as it is, if you see reality, you are liberated. The realm of the adventitious, characterized by distinctions, is empty. The realm of the undifferentiated, characterized by the unsurpassed Dharma, is not empty. What does this show? Because in the Tathagatagarbha, which is completely pure by nature, there is no cause of afflictions to be removed, because being free from adventitious stains is the nature of this (317). There is also nothing to be established as a cause of purification in this, because the nature of non-differentiation is the nature of this (Tathagatagarbha). Therefore, the Tathagatagarbha is empty, empty of what can be distinguished, what can be separated, and all the aggregates of afflictions; the Tathagatagarbha is not empty, not empty of what cannot be distinguished, what cannot be separated, and the inconceivable Buddhadharma, surpassing the sands of the Ganges. Thus it is said. Therefore, what is not in something is empty of it. Thus, it is correctly observed accordingly, and what is particularly present there is always present in it. Thus, it is known as it is in reality. These two verses, in order to be free from the extremes of addition and subtraction, show the characteristic of non-inverted emptiness. Thus it is said. This is the ultimate emptiness. Furthermore, in order to show the indirect meaning, the Madhyamaka-prasangika scriptures teach that all dharmas are empty.

That is, those outsiders (318) who cling to the self of the person, as well as the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas who cling to the self of the Dharma, and the newly practicing Bodhisattvas who are attached to phenomena and regard antidotes as supreme, in order to guide them to the Dharma of ultimate emptiness, emptiness is taught as being like the sky. The intention is that the nature of mind, the luminosity of self-nature, refers to ultimate emptiness. The necessity is to separate from individual clinging. The harm to reality is: it has the characteristic of being non-dual, and is not empty of the supreme Dharma. It is said. In the commentary on the Uttaratantra, it says: Emptiness, which is a distraction of the mind, refers to Bodhisattvas who have newly and correctly entered the Mahayana, or to those who are equal to the Tathagatagarbha in the manner of emptiness. It is said. In the Sutra Unraveling the Intent, it says: I taught that all dharmas are emptiness, considering the three types of non-self-existence. It is said. In the Nirvana Sutra, it says: I have taught in the Prajnaparamita that all dharmas are emptiness, for the benefit of those Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas who have newly entered the Mahayana, as well as other non-Buddhists who are attached to phenomena, cling to the self, and are bound by conceptual clinging. But in reality, all dharmas are self-luminous, and one should realize that such meaning is the spontaneously accomplished nature. This is the essence of what was said. If one does not understand that the nature of reality is naturally pure and spontaneously accomplished, then as an antidote to the four perversions, even if one meditates on impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and impurity, one will not be able to attain definite liberation, because one has not realized the true meaning. Again, in the same sutra, it says: Bhikshus, for example, when the time of Soka arrives, people wrap themselves in bathing cloths and play in the water with their own ornaments and close companions. Therefore, a jewel of the Vaidurya type is placed in the water, and then for the sake of the Vaidurya, they all put down their ornaments and enter the water. Then, the sand or pebbles that are there are mistaken for jewels and grabbed, thinking, "I have found a jewel."
