Reduced to ashes. That which has a tone that is not pervasive. The great elements of the five wisdoms are: Earth, Buddha-locana (佛眼,Buddha-locana,lit. Buddha-eye); Water, Māmaki (嘛嘛格,Māmaki, lit. Māmaki); Fire, Pāṇḍaravāsinī (白衣母,Pāṇḍaravāsinī,lit. White-clad Mother); Wind, Samaya-tārā (誓言度母,Samaya-tārā,lit. Vow Tara); Space, Dhātvīśvarī. In the pure realm of the five mothers reside all the Buddhas of the five families. The five impurities that appear from the light of that tone-image also arise from the tone or power of the five mothers. In the realm of transforming the five mothers into purity, all the dharmas of appearance, existence, samsara, and nirvana exist. Therefore, all appearances are called the realm of the bhaga of the mother. The characteristics of the five impure elements: From the light of the image (257) they appear as the source of their respective components and reside in the realm where other dharmas arise. They are classified as: hard and stable, liquid, hot, moving, and vast and expansive. Like the elements of a dream, they are the basis and source of the container and its contents. Of the two ways of arising, the five pure ones are: The five lights of self-nature, which from the beginning arose in the realm of the five essence-lights, like the inner light of crystal. The light of the image-tone is moved by the wind of wisdom and arises naturally. The way the impurities arise is that the impurities arise from the light of the image: From the white light without hardness arises the hard earth; from the yellow light of water without liquid arises the liquid water; from the red light of fire without heat arises the hot fire; from the green light of wind without movement arises the moving wind; from the blue light of space without pervasiveness arises the pervasive and expansive space. The way of liberation is to be liberated from the nature of what first arose, because it is not necessary to become the five elements again. That is to say (258), the five impure elements are liberated in the nature of the image, and when the three realms of existence appear, the illusion disappears. The light of the image dissolves into the five pure lights of their respective natures, and the clear light appears inwardly. This is the moment when the ground returns to its original state, revolving in the center of the spontaneously accomplished jewel, and the kapala (嘎巴,Kapala, lit. skull-bowl) regains its original position. Therefore, the great elements, the Bhagavan, are the inherent nature for all beings. Upon that, the lights of the directions gather, forming the four corners, above and below. From the differences in uncertain colors, the different families appear separately. Likewise, the moving dust and the unmoving are the most important of the five elements. Thus it is said. In the Kunjed Gyalpo Tantra it is said.

As I have said. These principles are explained in detail in the Samantaprabhāsa. Regarding the nature, definition, and classifications with examples of the elements, I have spoken, keep them well in mind. The nature is explained through classification, namely the essence and dross of the elements. The nature of the essence is the five wisdoms that possess characteristics. The nature of the dross is the five elements of earth, water, fire, wind, and space. (259) The definition of the elements is that they arise from the power of awareness, and from that power arise samsara and nirvana, therefore they are called elements. The classifications are fourfold: essence, dross, the dross of essence, and the essence of dross. Son of the lineage, remember well! The essence of the elements is the five wisdoms. The dross is earth, water, fire, and wind. The dross of essence is bones and flesh, etc. The essence of dross is the rainbow in the sky. The example is like the appearance of the sun's rays, or the appearance of light from crystal. Thus it is said. Vajra-holder, listen! The characteristic of earth is solidity. The characteristic of water is moisture. The characteristic of fire is heat. The characteristic of wind is movement. The characteristic of space is vastness. Their respective functions are also the same. From the essence of earth arises white light. From that appears the dross of earth. That is from the essence of the elements, four kinds of light arise. In that appear four kinds of dross. The characteristics of the essence of the elements are: (260) stability without solidity, cohesion without moisture, movement without motion, burning without heat, radiance without pervasiveness. The nature of reality, the Dharmakaya, is unchanging. The earth that is stable without solidity, the nature of reality and the Dharmakaya are inseparable, pure, transparent, without impurity. Everything is gathered into its state. The water that is cohesive without moisture, the nature of reality and the Dharmakaya are inseparable, without movement, without obstruction. The wind that moves without motion, whether going to the lower realms or going elsewhere. The nature of reality and the Dharmakaya are non-dual, the self-arisen radiance is wisdom, without other appearances or conceptual thoughts, the fire that burns without heat, what appears without other appearances is, the radiance with pervasive wisdom. Space is without pervasiveness, possessing radiance. The five dross elements dissolve into five lights. The five lights dissolve into the place of the essence. Even if analyzed, they arise in sequence.
