In short, sentient beings are those with moving breath. That is to say, because there is moving breath, it is said that there is a mind that can perceive. Thus it is said. Next, second, to explain in detail the order of how confusion actually occurs, there are five points. As stated in the Explanation Tantra: "I will explain in detail the manner of confusion, the basis, cause, and time of confusion, the condition of confusion, and the actual confusion." Therefore, first, there are three bases of confusion. The spontaneously accomplished nature of reality, awareness, the five lights that appear as external objects, the basis of confusion for mind and body, are explained by the first, middle, and last three. The bases of confusion are similar in some respects, so it is reasonable. Similarly, in the Explanation Tantra it says: "First, showing the basis of confusion, there are also three aspects to it, the nature of reality is the basis of confusion for objects, awareness is the basis of confusion for mind, and the five lights are shown as the basis of confusion for body. Initially, the nature of reality, awareness, is emptiness, in the middle, wisdom arises in various ways, and finally, clinging and conceptual habitual patterns increase, from which it appears like something without impurities. This is shown as the basis of confusion for objects. Now explain the basis of confusion for mind, initially, awareness moves unceasingly, in the middle, clinging arises to clarity, finally, the cause of mind is exhausted, from which various thoughts arise. This is shown as the basis of mind. Now show the basis of confusion for body (page 240), initially, it is clear in the expanse of awareness, in the middle, it arises in the expanse of the nature of reality, finally, habitual patterns arise from this, the aggregates of form appear as coarse objects, this is an example of the basis of confusion for body. The reasonableness of the three bases, the five essential points, I will explain. These five bodies, alas, secret lord, be sure to remember. The nature of reality is the basis of confusion for objects, why does it appear as an ignorant object? Awareness is the basis of confusion for mind, why is it that only awareness is similar in some respects? The five lights are the basis of confusion for objects, why are color and shape similar in some respects?" Thus it is said. In general, the basis is spontaneous accomplishment, and the basis of confusion is the clarity of awareness that arises from this in the intermediate eon, so distinguishing is very important. Next, second, the cause of confusion is ignorance, the essence of which is bewilderment about knowledge, the definition of which is not understanding, the classification of which is the coemergent ignorance that does not recognize oneself as wisdom in terms of awareness, and the two types of ignorance that cling to others as existent, which are imputed ignorance. For example, like a blind old woman wandering without direction. Confusion

(241) The way is: like mistaking a rope for a snake, although it doesn't exist in its own nature, it appears in manifestation, etc., and is deluded by being grasped. Synonyms for the name: ignorance, delusion, unknowing, incomprehension, not seeing, confusion, perversion. As it says in 'The All-Illuminating': 'The cause of confusion is ignorance, co-emergent and imputed. Essence, definition, distinctions, analogy, manner, and expression are all shown.' Son of lineage, the essence of ignorance is delusion, and grasping what is not that as that. The definition is: because of being obscured about the meaning, it is ignorance. There are two distinctions: co-emergent ignorance and imputed ignorance. From what does co-emergent ignorance arise, and with what does it co-emerge? By what is what not known? Son of lineage, from what? From the consciousness that grasps the basis. With what? With the co-emergent wisdom and ignorance, the two. In what? In the expanse of the nature of reality that is not fabricated by remedies. By what is what not known? Like the light of one's own nature, the appearance of the light of the form (242) image in a mirror, that is ignorance. Therefore, it is called co-emergent ignorance. Imputation is the arising of a coarse understanding of an object, the manner of previous and subsequent moments. The analogy is like a blind old woman. Alas! Son of lineage, that ignorance is also not truly existent. So how is it? Like a stump, or a rope mistaken for a snake, no one there but mistaken for a ghost, someone previously defeated appearing as an enemy, or the appearance of a rope as a snake. That appears even though it is not truly existent, and is empty even though it appears. Son of lineage, in that analogy, ignorance is not actually existent, but is existent in experience. Why does that arise? Because the limit of the body is not complete, the power of wisdom is not complete, the object of seeing, the five lights of the radiance of wisdom, the memory of awareness is not awakened. That awakened, in the unwavering state, from Samantabhadra, the arising of the wisdom of its own nature appearing unhindered on the object, because it was not previously seen or experienced, I become attached to it, the great (243) self-appearance, the limit of realization is not decided. Son of lineage, that is the reason for ignorance. Ignorance, delusion, unknowing, incomprehension, not seeing the meaning, confusion, perversion.
