Definition. Classification. Examples. The way of realization. The nature of play is perfection, becoming Dharma, following. The definition is that which arises from itself is played by play. Classification: Pure (230) The play of Dharmata, appearing as body, wisdom, and compassion in the radiance of awareness; impure samsaric play, the container and its contents appearing as delusion. Appearing as form is the play of the body, appearing as sound is the play of speech, and remembering awareness is the play of mind. It arises from the radiance of body, speech, and mind, and now exists in the play of the three doors. In the Explanatory Tantra, it says: Now I will explain the meaning of play. The perfection of non-obstruction and non-duality, I have shown as the nature of play. Why is it called play? It arises from itself and is perfected from itself. This is the reason for the definition. There are two types of classification: pure Dharmata play and samsaric self-nature play. Pure Dharmata play arises from the unconditioned Dharmata and the unwavering self-nature, without any obstruction of self-nature. Just as the radiance of the four elements appears in the stainless sky, know that appearance is without self-nature, and the unobstructed self-radiance shines brightly. Samsaric self-nature play is the Dharma that encompasses the outer and inner containers and contents. (231) Appearing as form is the body, which cannot be grasped like the moon in water. All sounds and languages are speech, which has no self-nature like an echo in a valley. Remembering and discriminating thoughts are mind, like drawing a picture on water. Attachment does not exist in self-nature. Therefore, all forms are the play of the body, all sounds and languages are the play of speech, and all remembering and discriminating thoughts are the play of mind. Therefore, not understanding and clinging to characteristics and self-nature, this is the play of samsara. So it is said. Example: As it says in the same scripture: Just as water droplets scatter and gather in the ocean, various images appear through the action of illusion. Qualities are unobstructed, and play clearly manifests everything. There are many examples of play, but this is a summary. So it is said. The way of realization is that for ordinary people, deluded appearances arise naturally, are naturally clung to, and abide in real clinging. Yogis see the absence as the adornment of awareness, and knowing it as play, it is liberated as illusory self-appearance, realizing the absence of extremes of existence and non-existence. As it says in the same scripture: Any yogi who possesses realization, the appearances of adornment and play, all kinds of (232)

Appearing like an illusion, yet without inherent existence. The nature of reality, the Dharmakaya, is invisible, yet without inherent existence. By realizing the non-existence of what appears to exist, one overpowers the characteristics. By realizing the existence of what appears to be non-existent, awareness seizes its own ground. Therefore, ornaments and play are taught. Thus it is said. Furthermore, although illusory appearances seem to exist, in reality they are non-existent. By realizing this self-clarity, the cycle of grasping and clinging illusions collapses without support. Although awareness, being insubstantial and transparent, seems to be non-existent, in reality, by realizing the spontaneously accomplished great perfection where form and wisdom are inseparable, one transcends suffering, and awareness seizes its own ground as the Dharmakaya. This key point is extremely important. ༈. Thirdly, there are two ways in which Samantabhadra attains liberation: the Dzogchen way of no appearance, where one becomes enlightened as one is; and the way of appearance, where the ground appearance arises outwardly and clearly, and one aspires to become enlightened. The first is that one aspires to become enlightened in an instant of knowing the ground, without moving from its emptiness, as one's own Dharmakaya. In the Tantra of Intent, the Oral Transmission, it says: At that time, Samantabhadra (233) with six dharmas, destroys the six ignorances of the ground consciousness. In a mere instant, existence becomes empty. With the mere arising of awareness, the obscuration of awareness is destroyed. With clarity, the veils of darkness are cleared away. With a sudden arising, there is no dimness. Free from exaggeration and denigration, ignorance is cleared away. Unchanging, it is like the sky. Thus it is said. In the Tantra of the Self-Arisen Bliss Wheel, it says: In a mere instant, when awareness arises, with clarity, it is free from exaggeration and denigration. Thus it is said. These teachings hold that one becomes enlightened through the self-nature of the ground, primordial purity, compassion, and awareness. As for the way of appearance, by knowing the self-radiance and self-nature of the spontaneously accomplished ground appearance, one becomes enlightened from the ground itself, with the Rupakaya and Dharmakaya in their own place. Furthermore, the self-radiance of the spontaneously accomplished ground, compassion, is differentiated in an instant. In the second, one is liberated. In the third, one coils into a fruit within the spontaneously accomplished precious essence. In one instant, one differentiates. In one instant, one becomes perfectly enlightened. Thus it is said. In both of these, because compassion arises in the ground, it seems to move, but without grasping at external objects, one is liberated in one's own place in an instant, so becoming enlightened from the ground itself has the same meaning. Furthermore, one becomes enlightened in the ground through the self-arisen, self-aware wisdom. In Kunsel it says: Likewise, with impartial wisdom, the protector becomes perfectly enlightened from the ground itself, the habitual patterns of illusion.
