However they arise, know them to be words that symbolize the basis (221). Thus it was said. Third, the way of appearing is the play of compassion, which has three aspects: briefly indicating the meaning with three ways of appearing; explaining the nature in detail separately; and showing the way of liberation of Samantabhadra. First, these three—ability, adornment, and play—exist in the inner sphere of spontaneous, precious jewels, as the basis and the basis-appearance. They appear clearly outward, just as the form of a face appears in a mirror. How do they exist in the inner sphere? Because the essence of awareness is emptiness, and the way of appearing is unobstructed, it has ability. Because it has not become empty, it has the adornment of wisdom, not becoming spontaneous awareness, but rather the transparent, unreal adornment, not becoming self-sound void, but adorned with awareness, it has adornment. Awareness plays in self-sound, and self-sound plays in wisdom, and from that, it appears clearly outward, so it has play. These three are also not two in meaning because the basis-awareness is one. When these three are realized, they are called qualities. Because the greatness of awareness itself appears in this way (222). Second, there are three: indicating ability, adornment, and play. First, there are five: essence, definition, division, example, and way of appearing. The first four are: In the Kunsel it says: The essence is non-cessation. The definition is that it possesses the power of arising, therefore it is ability. The division is: appearing as illusory samsara, and appearing as realized nirvana, that is, samsara and nirvana. The example is: one sun appearing as many suns, or the rays of the sun being uninterrupted, or whether or not a potent poison is controlled by mantra, or camphor, or like an electric current. Thus it says. Fifth, in the inner clarity, capable of appearing or just able to appear, in the emptiness of awareness like a crystal ball, from the self-sound of the five wisdoms, from the self-ability of the five clear lights, the phenomena that appear clearly outward are, for the unawakened, the ability of samsara of grasping and clinging appears as illusion, and the ability of the wisdom of awakened nirvana appears as the two pure appearance form bodies. In the Explanation Tantra it says: From one Dharmakaya, different appearances arise, the way the ability of aware (223)ness appears is taught. Then the Teacher proclaimed: In the unreal transparent awareness, emptiness and non-cessation are not two, there knowing is unobstructed, the five wisdoms

It is self-arisen. The self-radiance of the Dharmadhatu wisdom is, in emptiness, clear and dark blue. The self-radiance of the mirror-like wisdom is, in unobstructedness, clear and white. The self-radiance of the equality wisdom is, in the undifferentiated realm, clear and yellow. The self-radiance of the great discriminating wisdom is, in the clear space, red and abiding. The self-radiance of the accomplishing activity wisdom is, in the unobstructed realm, green and accomplished. These five arise in the realm of Dharmata. It is called the arising of wisdom light. Through realization, the body and wisdom appear. Without realization, the container and its contents appear as two. For example, in a clean mirror, whatever encounters it appears, but at the time of appearance, there is no mistake. Although there is no mistake, it appears as such. Similarly, in the Dharmakaya of awareness, qualities arise unceasingly and variously. Although they arise, they remain in the single self-awareness. Remaining in the single (224), there is no multiplicity. At all times and in all circumstances, it abides in the great purity of non-existence. Unobstructed, naked, and naturally appearing. The appearance of the two form bodies is also, not appearing to oneself, but utterly pure. So it is. The actual way of arising is: from the power of awareness, the five wisdoms arise. From its power, the five lights arise as the five elements. From its power, the container arises as the form of the elements. From its power, individual flowers and so on arise. From the five lights of bindu, the five elements of the body arise as power. From that, the aggregates, elements, and sense bases arise. Furthermore, through realization, the power of nirvana, the five bodies, five wisdoms, and activities all arise. Qualities arise unceasingly and spontaneously. In that (text) it says: In all the tantras and instructions I have taught, whenever the word "power" appears, it should be explained as follows: The power of awareness is the five wisdoms. The power of that is the five lights. The power of the five lights is the five elements. The power of the five elements is as follows: From the power of space, clouds and wind arise. Vastness and separation are also like that. In the power of wind, roaring sounds arise. Lightness and movement are also like that. In the power of water (225), gurgling sounds arise. Moisture and cohesion are also like that. In the power of earth, forms appear. Solidity and stability are also like that. In the power of fire, heat and burning arise. Ripening and completion are also like that. In the self-nature power of the combined elements, trees, forests, medicinal incense, flowers, crops, and fruits appear. In the power of the five lights, it arises as the outer appearance. In the power of the bindu, it is shown as the inner appearance. From the white, flesh and bones appear.
