The radiance of awareness, La, is boundless in both samsara and nirvana, being the great, self-luminous transparency. As the Explanatory Tantra states: "One's own awareness, its essence is the wisdom of non-entity, abiding in utter transparency. Since it is not a coarse phenomenon, the gate of qualities is vast, being the source of all dharmas. Its essence is without limit." Thus it is. Its definition is: the self-radiance of the ground awareness is the ground appearance that is inwardly clear. As it says in the same text: "Because it is its own appearance, it is the appearance of the essence itself." Thus it is. Examples are of two types: essence and variety. As for the essence example: the example of the appearance of the essence itself is present in the inner space, but not outwardly clear, like the state of cloudless sky (213). The example of the essence itself's form, the five mudra forms appearing, is like the heart of the sun or the full moon. As the Explanatory Tantra states: "What is the example like? It is like the sky and the sun. Son of lineage, the appearance of the essence itself is like the sky free from clouds. The sound of the essence itself is like the heart of the sun." Thus it is. The variety example is the collection of the reverse properties of the ground appearance. Although represented by many examples, they converge on one meaning. For example, the single orb of the sun: because it is round, it is like an egg; because it is clear, it is like a lamp; because it is hot, it is like fire. Although described in this way, the reverse properties of shape, light, and rays are self-descriptive in different ways, and should be understood as not having separate meanings. Again, the same text states: "The Bhagavan said: Vajradhara, listen! I will explain the examples and symbols that represent the great ground appearance. The unmoving is like the depths of the ocean. Emptiness, vastness, and pervasiveness are like the sky. The stainless is like crystal. The pure, clear, and unmixed is like a mirror and its reflection. Appearing in various forms, yet (214) unstained by defilements, is like a lotus. The unchanging is like a vajra or an elephant. The source of all is like the earth. Not truly existing, but arising from blessings, is like a wish-fulfilling jewel. One's own essence, clear and unceasing, is like the heart of the sun. Uninterrupted is like a river. Stable is like a mountain. The one appearing as many is like the sun and moon. The one pervading all is like the appearance of a rainbow in a water bubble. Finished."

The appearance of Dharmakaya in the ground itself is like the sun appearing in a mirror. The pervasion of Dharmakaya in Dharmata is like milk and butter. The abiding of awareness in the essence of Dharmata is like the sky and the sun. The non-conceptuality of Dharmata, possessing the power of Dharmakaya, is like the back and the edge of a razor. Perfection without mixture is like a silk tent and its reflection. The manifold and non-dual is like a tree and its shadow. The emanation and gathering of power from the ground is like the ocean and a drop of water. The adornment of Dharmata with Dharmakaya is beautiful, like scattering golden flowers (215) on a turquoise mandala. The abiding of wisdom as inner clarity in Dharmakaya is like crystal and the clear manifestation of the five lights within it. The completion of the three Kayas in the ground is like the unceasing rays of the sun's essence. Examples of essence, nature, and compassion are like a peacock's egg or the sun itself? Like clouds and rain in the sky. Or like a mani jewel. Although samsara and nirvana appear as qualities, because the essence of awareness is one, it is like camphor. Reality and appearance are like a lamp and a mirror. Awareness and wisdom are like gold and its yellowness. These are examples primarily illustrating Dharmata and Dharmakaya. Thus it is said. The enumeration of terms also serves as names for the ground and aspects of ground-appearance. The Svabhavikakaya (Essence Body). The appearance of Svabhavikakaya. The Great Appearance. The Unfabricated Body. Self-arisen Wisdom of Awareness. The Single Bindu, the All-Doer. The Alaya, like a mirror, the complete characteristics of the field of Vajradhara. The Sixth Vajradhara, the Ground as it is. The Grandfather of all Buddhas. The Primordial Protector, Light (216) Unchanging. The Youthful Vase Body. The Spontaneously Accomplished Buddha. The First Buddha. Buddha Amitabha. Victorious One, Great Mass of Light. The Grandfather of all Buddhas. Primordial Ground, Samantabhadra. And so on. In relation to the basis of the appearance of essence. The three of essence, nature, and compassion, wisdom, one syllable, non-dual. Unique. Transparent. Root. Expressed. Knowable. Nature. Cause. Seed. Primordial Purity. Jewel. Non-discriminating wisdom. The source of all dharmas. These are the names of the thirty-three grounds and ground-appearances. In the Explanatory Tantra, I have taught.
