All are good and bad. The appearance of pure nirvana manifests as the Dharmata, the clear light body and wisdom. The impure illusion of samsara includes past and future lives, the bardo, and dreams. Also included are the experiences and powers of the yogi's samadhi. All that arises outwardly and inwardly from awareness is like this. The definition is: Because it is the dharma between awareness abiding in its own place and realizing its own ground, it is called "bardo." Because it is the ground appearance, it is called "ma" (79). Because it is the appearance of the connection between samsara and nirvana, it is called "bardo." There are six divisions: the natural bardo, the samadhi bardo, the dream bardo, the death bardo, the dharmata bardo, and the existence bardo. The first is: all the natural times from birth until one is struck by the disease of death, when the six consciousnesses operate on the appearance of objects. Awareness cuts through the additions and subtractions of hearing and thinking about the meaning of dharmata. Like a bird entering its nest, one takes the meaning into practice and decides that everything is self-appearance. As it says in the Lha Gyü: "When looking outward, it is clear inward, like the example of a mirror's face." The second is: in the state of empty and clear awareness, without the radiance ceasing, one rests loosely, clearly, and openly, experiencing it like a rainbow appearing in the sky. As it says in the Semlung: "Clear, without object, unmoving, it shows the yogi's intention." The third is: from falling asleep until waking up, the objects of the five senses are gathered inward, and all the times when the mind rises as one on top of the alaya consciousness (80). Here, the method of practice is to recognize the meaning of clarity without thought when falling asleep, and without distraction, to continue the samadhi in that state. The illusion of dreams will cease, like a river flowing. As it says in the Hevajra: "The flow of a river is natural, the tip of a lamp is very bright, day and night constantly the yogi, should practice only this." The fourth is: when one is seized by the causes of death and the four elements dissolve into their respective parts, awareness becomes blurred, confused, intermittent, and muddled. At this time, one should not be distracted from the meaning of what was previously practiced and the instructions of the bardo, like threading a needle. As it says in the Semlung: "At the moment of death, in the bardo itself, without distraction, recognize with mindfulness, like threading a needle." The fifth is: dissolving into the clear light of the sky.
