Instructions for the son. In the bardo of dying, to clarify what is unclear is like a beautiful woman looking in a mirror. In the bardo of dharmata, trusting in self-appearance is like a mother putting a child in her lap. Incidentally (234), in the bardo of existence, continuing the karma is like building a dam on a broken canal. First, from birth to the approach of death, in the natural bardo, externally, the mind is trained by hearing the instructions of the lama and the profound tantras and agamas. Internally, by thinking about its meaning, the imputations of words and meanings are cut off. Secretly, by meditating on the self-nature of the meaning, one stabilizes in the state of primordial purity and exhaustion of phenomena. For example, before a bird enters its range, it cuts off the imputations of benefit and harm from afar, and then enters its range without hesitation. First, by hearing, one believes in the meaning of the manifest. In the middle, by thinking, one cuts off the imputations of doubt well. Finally, by meditating in the realm of manifest senses, one stabilizes in the state of indivisibility of space and wisdom. Second, to clarify in the bardo of dying, examine the external, internal, and secret signs of death. If they appear, perform the ritual of reversal. If the signs of absorption appear without being reversed, it is enough if one is clear oneself. If one is not clear, then the lama or a friend with pure samaya (235) gives instructions to clarify. In the process of giving instructions, if the external breath has ceased, bring the patient's and one's own mouth and nose together, and propel the air with Oṃ (藏文:ཨོཾ,梵文天城体:ओम्,梵文罗马拟音:oṃ,汉语字面意思:嗡), guide with Ā (藏文:ཨཱ,梵文天城体:आ,梵文罗马拟音:ā,汉语字面意思:啊), and stabilize with Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽), doing this five times or so, and when the eyes flicker, let them look at the appearance of space and wisdom, and without changing from this, look and pass away in peace! In the bardo of dharmata, recognize the appearance of self-appearance dharmata as your own nature! Pass away in peace! Do not be distracted by the appearance of the vajra-being's secret path, the rope of the stream of compassion, in the eyes, look! Pass away in peace! Thus, generate certainty three times and speak. This is like a beautiful woman looking at her face in a mirror, clearly seeing whether there are blemishes or differences in ornaments. At the time of death, one should clearly remember the meaning of the instructions. The sign of earth dissolving into earth is that the body's frame falls to the ground, and one cannot stand up. Internally, consciousness becomes blurred. The sign of water dissolving into water is that water flows from the mouth, nose, and eyes (236) and then dries up. Teeth and tartar fall off. Internally, consciousness becomes faint.

ceases. The sign of fire dissolving into fire is: heat is absorbed from the soles of the four limbs, the radiance of the eyebrows fades, and inwardly, awareness becomes confused and obscured. The sign of wind dissolving into wind is: the outer breath becomes coarse and accumulates, and inwardly, awareness becomes unclear. The sign of wind dissolving into consciousness is: the outer breath goes out with a "ha" sound, and comes in with a "hu" sound, the breath becomes weaker and weaker until it ceases. Inwardly, awareness becomes obscured. The sign of consciousness dissolving into space is: inwardly, the breath gathers at the heart. The white and red essences gather. When the wind moves the essence and gathers in the life force, although fear and dread arise, they do not manifest outwardly. At that time, the three doors of body, speech, and mind separate, and the body becomes a tangible, inanimate object. The wind dissolves into space. When awareness, like a spark rising upwards, does not remain but goes out, consciousness is close to entering the clear light. Therefore, the dissolution of consciousness into space is called the manifestation of primordial purity, like a cloudless sky. When it appears for a moment, merely recognizing the exhaustion of primordial wisdom of the expanse and awareness, one is liberated upwards and completely. As it says in the "Union of Sun and Moon Sutra": "If the expanse and awareness do not change, then that person will not experience the bardo, and there is no doubt that they will attain Buddhahood." Third, in the bardo of dharmata, the instruction on trusting one's own appearances like a child entering its mother's lap is: awareness is separated from limitations, and one's own radiance arises as the ground appearance, like the clarity of crystal light shining outwards, or like the clarity of a lamp when a vase is broken. One should recognize that this is one's own appearance. That is, in the first instant of the dissolution of space into clear light, white and red rays of light appear from one's own two eyes, like a ladder erected or a rope stretched out. Merely recognizing that this is the radiance of one's own awareness, one is liberated upwards and completely. As it says in the "Introduction to Self-Arisen Wisdom": "At that time, rays of light like a ladder erected or a rope stretched out appear from one's own two eyes. Merely recognizing this, one is liberated upwards and completely in an instant." (238) If one does not recognize this, then what is called the bardo of dharmata arises, all appearances are the nature of the five lights, shimmering like a mirage in summer, naturally bright and terrifying. From within the light, like a rain of rays and weapon-like light, the appearances of wrathful deities fill the sky. The self-sound of dharmata resounds like a thousand thunders roaring. If one recognizes this as one's own appearance, then one's own awareness is the body of the wrathful deities.
