Just as all kinds of images appear clearly, yet do not stain the ocean, appearing as objects, yet not established as objects to be grasped. When meditating in this way, external appearances arise as experiences, but because they are not established in reality, awareness does not fall onto external appearances. Appearances are not cut off by awareness, but remain in their own place, which is called meditation. If, during meditation, the six consciousnesses cease and one falls into unconsciousness, it is called falling into a state of one-pointed stillness, which is a deviation from meditation. Thus, awareness is not stained by appearances (375), and appearances are not scrutinized by awareness, but are clear in their own place. This is called the view abiding in the ground of appearance and existence. Previously, the arising of conceptual thoughts at the end of phrases such as "establishing on the ground" is cut off here. All accumulations are established in the ground and liberated in their own place. That is, the phenomena of appearance and existence, and the accumulations of names and letters that arise, are established in their own place, not remaining in words but liberated in their own place. This is called establishing in the reality of the ground of things. At that time, afflictions themselves increase, but their essence manifests as wisdom. For example, just as when a bowl is carved from clay, salt comes out in abundance, so the various phenomena associated with appearance will surely manifest as the Dharmakaya. At that time, that person is named, and it is called the time of abiding in the Dharma. All the phenomena of samsara and nirvana abide in one's own wisdom, and thus (376) without separation or division, abiding in one's own place, is called meditation. These are explained in the Kalachakra Tantra. The yogi who constantly practices the view has two views: the common view and the personal view. The common view is the different tenets of the nine vehicles. These are the views of words, holding onto conceptual thoughts. The personal view is the view of Atiyoga, effortless and spontaneous, seeing the external phenomena as devoid of inherent existence, seeing the internal Dharmata as unborn, and seeing the secret self-awareness as directly perceiving rigpa. And how does one see it? By looking at the fragments of phenomena with the vajra eye, the appearances of phenomena are seen as illusions, or like the dreams dreamed last night, realizing that confusion is not established as real.
