Regarding meditation: Although twenty-one types are taught in the Heart Drop, here, seven are meditated upon. That is, an individual endowed with diligence first accumulates merit through means such as pleasing the lama. Then, making the view agreeable to the mind, sit in the lotus posture on a comfortable seat. Focus the mind on the white syllable "A" (370): Visualize a white syllable "A" at the tip of your nose. When the breath goes out, visualize the "A" extending with the breath and remaining there. When drawing the breath in, focus the mind on the complete "A" residing at the tip of the nose. Furthermore, if you have a heat-related illness in your body, meditate on having a cool sensation; if you have a cold-related illness, meditate on having a hot sensation. In this way, first practice short sessions with many repetitions, then gradually extend to half the day and half the night. By doing so, the experience of being free from birth and thought will inevitably arise. The syllable for dispelling obstacles is ཕཊ་ (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari: फट्, Sanskrit Romanization: phaṭ, Literal Chinese meaning: pa). Focusing the mind on the fierce: Relax the body and mind as before, and let awareness rest in its own place for a moment. Then, very fiercely, say "ཕཊ་" (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari: फट्, Sanskrit Romanization: phaṭ, Literal Chinese meaning: pa), and from that, a state of awakened awareness will arise. At that time, recognize the nature of wisdom, and repeatedly clarify awareness with "ཕཊ་" (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari: फट्, Sanskrit Romanization: phaṭ, Literal Chinese meaning: pa). Practicing this for half the day and half the night will inevitably lead to the experience of the completely pure nature (371). If you are not satisfied with that, focus the mind on the laughter of the wrathful deity: Again, do the same with the body, etc., as before, and verbally utter a short and fierce "ཧ་ཧ་" sound, focusing awareness on the "ཧ་" syllable. Whatever unpleasant thoughts arise in the mind, utter the "ཧ་" sound fiercely, and the key is to mix the speech, awareness, and wind together. Meditating in this way at all times will undoubtedly give rise to the experience of realizing the purity of the Dharma nature, free from clinging. When relying on speech in this way, it is said to be important that awareness is neither withdrawn nor scattered, and that the verbal recitation is not diminished. If you are still not satisfied with that, focus on the posture of the Asura fighting: Again, do the same with the body, etc., as before, and sit on a rock on a high mountain, etc., and slowly roll the head and body. The body should also be rolled slowly at first, and the body should also be rolled for about three or four days. Then roll fiercely, and then roll as much as your body can endure. In this way (372), without exceeding the mudra of shaking and moving, external appearances will cease.

Nothing whatsoever is established as its own nature, and it arises. At that time, the experience of seeing appearances self-liberated will not arise or exist. At that time, one should rely on auspicious food to nourish the prana. Focusing the mind on the syllable raṃ (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,ram, fire) at the navel is the key. If you don't like that, then hold the mind on chasing away conceptual thoughts with hūṃ (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,hūṃ,Hum). In the mouth, one should utter hūṃ (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,hūṃ,Hum) in a very long and melodious tone. Mixing it with the prana is the key. Also, sometimes one should utter hūṃ (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,hūṃ,Hum) briefly. If one does this continuously for a long time without being lazy, the experience of conceptual thoughts arising in the nature of reality will not arise or exist. If you don't like that, then hold the mind on emptiness gradually. Again, do the body posture and so on as before. First, break down the many parts of the body and assign various names and so on. By assigning names and meanings separately, one should know that the body is not established as a real thing. Then, for all external appearances (373), in the same way, look for and assign various names and meanings, but one will not find anything established anywhere. In this way, understanding that all things labeled with names are empty, and things also become empty. Then, gradually, the nature of reality will not go into emptiness. If you still don't like that, then put awareness into whatever form appears, and let the mind rest in a state of emptiness for a moment. At that time, whatever you look at, it will go away empty. By meditating in this way for a long time, all appearances will not go away empty like fogging a mirror. That is, first appearance, second emptiness, and third nothing is established as a real thing. If one gives a name to such meditation, it is called the meditation of combining day and night. Because the day is the part that has passed, and the night is the part of samsara. Therefore, at this time, by combining samsara and nirvana, it is called the nature of reality in which no object is established anywhere. At that time, there is no reason why daytime meditation is not clear, (374) and there is no reason why nighttime is not clear, but they are connected. The secret instruction there is the placement of the ocean: because it is the nature of tears, it is called the ocean. Whatever you meditate on, the key is to keep the eyes still. If you don't meditate, don't meditate. Once you start meditating, the key is not to close your eyes. By doing this, for example, in the great ocean, the sun, moon, and stars
