Making the immature ripen. Now, to liberate the ripened, the guru's instructions are bestowed. For example, a fertile field, if cultivated well, is like a fruit ripening. If one is initiated into a self-continuum that is completely pure, and relies on one who does not break vows, then fruit will arise. Moreover, (361) fruits such as barley are not enough to just leave there. After harvesting the crops, threshing the grain, winnowing, grinding, and so on, it is like being able to eat food. Similarly, the guru's teachings must be practiced in a place free from distractions, and through uncommon practice, enlightenment is attained, thereby obtaining the fruit of Buddhahood. Moreover, one should practice in this way: practice like a beggar, practice like a wild animal. The former refers to pretending to be an ordinary person in an unfamiliar place, pretending to know nothing, and practicing and restraining oneself. Not showing off one's qualities to others is a sign of not having greed and arrogance. Not asking about the tenets of other schools is a sign of not having doubts about one's own instructions. Practicing like a wild animal means: going to a quiet mountain forest or cemetery, etc., a place away from worldly distractions, and abandoning three activities to practice. That is, abandoning external physical activities (362), such as work and farming. In this way, the body relaxes, the pulse slows down, and when the pulse slows down, the breath naturally flows, so that discursive thoughts do not arise. Abandoning the activities of speech, stopping excessive talking, stopping speaking, the unspeakable meaning will arise from one's own continuum. Abandoning all activities of the mind, cutting off all discursive thoughts, focusing on the wisdom of the Dharmadhatu, one can directly see the nature of reality. Moreover, how should one practice? There are two types of intelligence: intellect and awareness. Practice with intellect that focuses on external objects, and practice with awareness that focuses on self-appearance. First, it is explained according to categories and order: namely, action yoga, meditation, view, and the yogi who uses the fruit as an ornament. First, the yoga of continuous action: namely, the action of mastering appearances. Its instruction is the method of naked appearance: what kind of realization will arise from this? It is the realization of establishing the basis of the phenomenal world. Through this, afflictions are transformed. (363) Such actions are of three types: karma of

First, avoid the ten non-virtuous actions and practice the ten virtuous actions in order. Then, measure the three doors of body, speech, and mind through the conduct of distinguishing between samsara and nirvana. Although there are twenty-one types of ascetic wind-holding conduct, here they are condensed into seven: That is, first, the conduct of comparing from all aspects like a bee searching for a hive, distinguishing between the Dharma that has been heard and what is not Dharma, and identifying what should be abandoned and the antidotes. Then, suppress the afflictions with thought; uproot the afflictions from their source with meditation. As an aid to this, like a bird entering a nest without hesitation: Just as when a bird enters a nest, it first cuts off human disguises and then enters without error; first cut off disguises through hearing, and then take a secret instruction in which you have confidence as a yidam and practice it. As an aid to this, like a wounded wild animal (364), a conduct that is not practiced by everyone: Just as a wounded wild animal, because of the pain of the wound, flees to the mountains and stays alone in a cave or on a ridge no matter what; the yogi, too, because of fear of samsara, should stay alone in a place where people do not go, such as a cemetery. At that time, like a mute person, the conduct of being without speech: Just as a mute person cannot speak, cut off speech and do not say anything. Having done that, the conduct of being like an erratic madman will arise: Like the words of a madman, irrelevant and broken talk will spontaneously arise. At that time, the conduct of being like a dog or pig, without cleanliness or filth, will arise: The conduct of indiscriminately consuming good and bad food will arise. When all of these are complete, the conduct of being like a lion, not being overwhelmed by anything, will arise: Just as a lion has no fear or apprehension of anything, the yogi, too, will be free from appearances and so on, and will be able to control appearances. If these conducts are named, they are called the conduct of controlling inner appearance (365), which is the ability to transform the lack of faith of others, the ability to revive the dead, the ability to have magical powers, the ability to control the four elements, and so on. The secret instruction for this is the method of nakedly placing appearances, which is to learn whatever appears as a phenomenon.
