The self-arisen deity, Samantabhadra, Father and Mother, and the lineage lamas such as Vajradhara, I pray, please bestow your blessings. Yidam mandala, assembly of deities, supreme gods, Dakinis, protectors, ocean of hosts, please grant the two kinds of siddhis and dispel obstacles. Because my own mind of faith is greatly stirred, to bring joy to faithful disciples, I briefly write the biography of the glorious lama. If there are any mistakes in this (667), please forgive me. Here, my venerable lama, the lord of yoga himself. First, the manner in which he was born in a supreme place, with a noble lineage. From youth, he had a connection to the Dharma. Through that power, he entered the gate of the Dharma. From that, he relied on accomplished masters. From all of that, he engaged in hearing, contemplating, and meditating on the sacred Dharma. Then, he benefited the monks, disciples, and all sentient beings in general. He subdued obstacles and wrong views. (668) He obtained visions of yidam deities. He received prophecies from the lamas. Finally, he passed into the realm of purity, etc., explained through ten points. First, as for the first point, the place is where the sacred Dharma flourishes and the ten virtues are practiced, the village is mainly a monastery. The father was named Kunga Bum, of the Drom lineage descended from Dromtonpa Gyalwai Jungne. The owner of eighty pillars of Nyemo (modern Nyemo County) Zuk Kunga Rawak, he built a bumtsar (stupa) for each son born. He invited the main deity there and performed the consecration of the son's footprint. It seems that the name Bum also comes from that. The mother was Sangye Rinchen's daughter, Samdrub Bum. They had three sons, and Drungpa himself was born as the middle one. Secondly, as for the second point, from a young age, he had faith, devotion, and renunciation towards the Dharma, (669) he liked the appearance of monks, and diligently recited Mani and other minor prayers. Especially, he put his mind to writing and reading. Even though he didn't have the opportunity to consult a teacher, he learned the alphabet by copying from his uncle Pajo, and learned as much as he could. Then, he carried Dharma papers and leaves, and studied while working, so he was able to understand the meaning. It is said that because he imitated the posture of Jowo Che, he studied writing even more diligently. I didn't have the opportunity to study except while working as a servant, so I only learned a little bit. My mother also thought it was good that I was doing this on the side.

What was said was that I was sent to study. I also worked as a servant for my uncle, doing many things. By drawing the shapes of those things crookedly, I understood a little. Later, my uncle was sent to learn to write, and I went to deliver tsampa (670), but my uncle ran away to another place. Not only did I not eat the tsampa I brought, but I also learned to write from my uncle. I stayed for eight days. After that, I thought about staying with my uncle to help him deliver tsampa, but my mother was afraid of fighting and went back. She said that these letters are the ones that can be used to copy scriptures. Like the third one, I thought about becoming a monk at my uncle's place, and he said that would be good. I also thought so in my heart, but I couldn't bear to leave, and my younger brother was still young, and my uncle was at home, and my mother couldn't do anything, so I delayed for two years. After that, there was no time to finish these things. There was no way to do it. I wanted to go and study Buddhism. I secretly saved some decent things. I wanted to discuss it with my uncle, so I went to (Mdo la gzhis khar), but not only did I not discuss it, but I also cried and said that I dared to do this. He said that I was almost beaten to death, and chased me for a long time. I said don't do this, (671) and I retorted him like that. I left him and went far away, saying that you have no way to do it. I am determined to become a monk myself. After that, I returned home, and my mother and uncle said this. What do you want to do? I said that if I could meet a Dharma, it would be good for me and also help you, etc., and I said many advantages and disadvantages, but they still said that I was almost beaten to death, and they were also smoking. You said you are really a useless thing. I am leaving, the lama is the real Buddha. If you also want to become a nun, come tomorrow. I said goodbye to my mother and relatives, and gave up my wishes. When I came without looking back on this life, when I arrived at the door, the steward and scribe Bodhi led Bawa. Because I was concerned, I wanted to meet him briefly. I asked to go in like this from outside, and my mother said it was not good, and she pitied me during the day. In any case, this is the road to take. I asked my mother, it's not like I'm doing bad things, what's not to pity about studying Buddhism. My mother said, then study Buddhism well. Saying that, she gave (672) a piece of phel, about two portions of tea, a piece of clothing, etc., and I took those things up. As soon as I arrived at བྱམས་སྡིངས (Byams sdings), I felt immeasurable joy in my heart. My uncle knew about it and reported it. The next morning, my age was
