For food, there was only a patched-up, short Tibetan upper garment and lower skirt, barely enough to cover the body. One night (514), while staying at a house in Chamda, a Geshe from U-Tsang was also staying there. He said, "Where are you from?" I replied, "I am from Sangpu." He asked, "What have you studied?" I replied, "I have studied the Vinaya, the Five Treatises of Maitreya, Pramana, and so on." He asked, "Where are you from?" I replied, "I am from Gyama, my hometown is Zulphuk, and I became a monk in Jayul. I have studied the Madhyamakavatara well." He said, "So, in Gyama, there is a meditation cave of the accomplished Chokla. What is that stone cave like?" I replied, "The stone cave is good, what is it for?" He said, "If I can find a good barley bag through alms, I would like to spend a winter there." I said, "Then I will also spend the winter there. I have some autumn harvest barley to collect here, I can serve you." In that village, there was a mantra practitioner whose child had died young. He said, "Do you know the black Hayagriva fire puja?" I replied, "Yes." He said, "Then (515) please come to my house." So he performed the fire puja and offered a bag of good barley. After that, he went with that Geshe to the stone cave of Chokla. He vowed to do a retreat for eight months, made a dark room, and invited him there. Every morning, he would give that Geshe a large Prajnaparamita teaching. After five months, early in the morning, he heard the sound of cymbals and beautiful songs in the sky. He looked up and saw, from the end of the valley, a place with a small sand dune and a small river, coming up a horse adorned with golden armor and tinkling bells. On it rode a woman about sixteen years old, wearing silk clothes, adorned with gold and jewels, and covering her face with a golden veil. I grabbed the reins and requested the Holy Mother Avalokiteshvara to compassionately accept me. She took off a precious headdress, placed it on his head, and said, "From now on, I will bless (516) and bestow accomplishments." After saying that, through her blessing, for a month, he obtained the samadhi of bliss, clarity, and non-discrimination, and also received the prophecy of meeting the great vidyadhara Kumararaja. After that, he broke the retreat,

For the sake of his mother, he performed one hundred and eight rituals of Kunrig. Thinking that even the rituals shown to the master were so many, there would surely be blessings, he requested empowerment. He agreed. While the master went to fetch water, a very good mandala was built with paint and iron plates that were not pecked by birds, and a wealthy mantra practitioner with his wife and family, and about thirty men and women received the empowerment. Alas, how wonderful! Compassionate protector! Please look upon me from the invisible realm of Dharma! Please quickly dispel the darkness of ignorance in my heart with the wisdom and radiance of the Lord of Speech! Then, at the age of twenty-seven, when he went to the great Vidyadhara (517), he went down to Samye and met Yakdeba Chen. He said, "Where are you going now? Everyone is gathering at Dharma King Karmapa to ask for Dharma, it is right to go there." I replied, "I am going to the upper reaches of Kang to visit the Vidyadhara Kuma Raja who is said to be living there." After saying that, he went to the upper reaches of Kang and met the Vidyadhara master and disciples, who had about seventy black tents. The master said, "Yesterday I dreamed of a strange heavenly bird surrounded by thousands of small birds, carrying my scriptures and flying in different directions. It seems that it was coming to see you. It seems that someone will come to inherit my Dharma lineage." Then he was very happy. It is said that he was twenty-seven years old at this time. That spring, he moved nine times from one empty valley to another, moving each time he settled in one place, which caused physical and verbal fatigue. Because the clothes (518) were old, there were a few attendant young monks, and even the dogs hated me. The next day, the teaching was about to begin, and two teaching supervisors brought a large container and said, "Where is Geshe Samyepa's religious tax? Including power, lineage, etc., seven khals of barley are required." I said, "I have nothing, I am here to seek Dharma." They sat down. They said, "Who will pay the religious tax for this little teaching?" Because I did not accumulate merit in my previous life, I suffered so much. Because I had to suffer for the religious tax, I felt ashamed to see people, and at dawn I reached the end of this valley.
