It should be written on paper. Furthermore, in the Supreme Tantra of Great Samaya, it is said: Generally, the so-called samaya is the absence of anger in one's own mind, and freedom from deceit and hypocrisy. Thus it is said. In the Samaya Tantra, it is said: Differentiating the samayas of mantras, the names of samayas are countless. In the Kriya division, the special point is not drinking water from the same source, and distinguishing between mantras and deities. In the samayas of the Yoga division, it is to be reversed by the movement of the mind, and understood by the mind of mindfulness. In the Maha division, if it is broken, one should not meet even for a moment. In the Anu division, if it is broken, it should not be restored by the mind's mindfulness, and it should be prevented by knowing the change. In the Ati division, if it is broken, the order of words should be abandoned, and the behavior of the mind should not change. Among these, in summary, are the limbs and the root. The limbs are the teachings of the inner path, which should be known and not abandoned, practiced and accepted, and cultivated. From realization, the names are too many to be spoken. The root is determined from the three, divided from the nine aspects, and with twenty-seven differences, from the mantras, especially in the inner path, the samayas are summarized and divided. If one does not transgress this, then Vajradhara, the complete Buddha, will surely attain it in this life. (422) Thereafter, the mantra practitioner should strive and be mindful. If one desires the supreme accomplishment, one should not deceive the guru, and one should not cut off the continuity of love for one's Dharma brothers and sisters. Thus it is said. If one does not remember the faults of samsara, one loses the root of liberation and omniscience. If one does not remember the suffering of the three lower realms, one loses the seed of bodhi. If one does not contemplate the connection of karma and its results, one is separated from the moisture of compassion. If one does not abandon worldly affairs, one loses the gate of the increase of wisdom. If one does not accept the two accumulations, one loses the fruit of enjoyment and liberation. If one does not constantly meditate on one's own mind, one loses the root of the two accumulations. If one does not rely on solitary retreats, one loses the vision of the mind. Know that meditation not grasped by view is a friend of conceptual thought. Know that behavior not grasped by meditation is artificial fabrication. Know that virtuous activity not grasped by behavior is hypocritical pretense. Know that samaya not grasped by faith (423) is a verbal transaction.

It should be done accordingly. Giving that is not seized by compassion, should be known as seeking profit and fame. Empowerment that is not seized by samaya, should be known as a wrong path. Actions that are not seized by mindfulness, should be known as meaningless. Views that are not seized by the lama, should be known as conceptual thought. Blessings without respect for the lama, should be known as obstacles. Practice without keeping samaya, should be known as meaningless like chaff. Practice without instructions, should be known as empty talk. Explanations not coming from the lama, should be known as nonsense. Results not coming from the Dharma, should be known as degeneration. In the tantras it is said: Explaining the vows of samaya, All arise from one's own mind. The lama knows its benefits, Therefore, a person who merges with the mind, Sees the pure lands of the Buddhas, Accomplishes the three kayas completely, And realizes the qualities of the Buddhas. A person who always relies on the lama, Sees the forms of the dakinis, Receives their blessings, And can also show prophecies of the three times, And gains power over birth and death. A person who has compassion for friends, Subdues all sentient beings, Is praised by everyone, Loves all forms, Always abides in samaya, The assembly of dakinis gathers, Accomplishments arise without practice, The power of speech blazes, Likewise, all supreme and common activities are perfected. A person who always stays in a solitary place, Grasps the measures of wind and mind, Appearances arise as companions, And gains power over one's own mind. A person who serves and honors the lama, Possesses supreme enjoyment, The retinue flourishes and is blessed with auspicious merit, And overcomes all sentient beings. A person who always completes empowerment, Becomes the chief of sentient beings, Everyone (425) is happy to see him, And wisdom is manifestly accomplished, And the Buddhas bless him. A person who always performs the work of tormas, Completes the accumulation of merit, Without obstacles and all tasks are accomplished, Desires are completely fulfilled, And the dakinis are enslaved like servants. Thus it is said. In distinguishing samaya, It is determined as three arrangements. Composed by the Brahmin teacher Manjushri Mitra.
