Knowing thus, one transcends the three realms in a single instant. (238) This is the sixth meaning. Now, the seventh meaning is presented, which is that the nature of mind transcends the act of being without a basis. Furthermore, since the mind has no basis, the object to be abandoned, the support of thought, is weakened. This is the place of arising for the rootless mind. Furthermore, since memory and thought vanish into the basis, they do not arise again from the basis. The nature of mind is a single bindu, and because the root is severed, it does not increase. With this reasoning, the tenet that considers the basis and the path as one is mistaken. The fourteen verses about the stages and paths, etc., can be understood from the text. These are the seven branches that explain the second condensed meaning. Now, the first of the four branches that explain the third condensed meaning is the meaning of the nature of reality, which is the explanation of relying on teachings with examples to generate faith. For example, the story of "the demoness deceiving": There was a very reliable and pleasing son who was killed by a father named "Pleased to Kill Demons" (239). The mother asked, "Where has my son gone?" The father replied, "He is lost." So the mother circled the four continents and Mount Meru three times searching, but could not find him. Finally, she was completely despondent and abandoned attachment. Similarly, when memory kills awareness, cutting off the source of memory and awareness, but cannot be ended, one will become skilled in the purity of the immeasurable appearances and realities in which thoughts vanish. The second teaching is like a great garuda with fully developed wings: Just as a garuda hatches from an egg and its wings are fully developed, and it flies through the sky without obstruction, similarly, placing the various thoughts of memory and awareness in the unaltered nature of the original thing, hiding them in the manner of self-absorption, that is, hiding them with the breath below the throat, thereby cutting off the thoughts of samsara without obstruction. By doing this, one will know that one's own nest has been transformed into wisdom. The third teaching is like a lion cub (240) with complete limbs: Just as a lion cub is born from its mother's womb and its limbs are complete within six days, without any obstruction, similarly, when the earlier and later thoughts cease, searching for the interval in which thoughts vanish, by practicing without obstruction in appearances, one will become skilled in the cessation of the essential points of appearances and awareness, and in the place of vanishing. The fourth teaching is like hanging a jewel on the top of a wish-fulfilling tree: For example, a poor person on the sun

Just as offering a wish-fulfilling jewel on top of a wish-fulfilling tree when the moon is eclipsed will bring about whatever one desires, so too, by grasping the essential point of skillful means, everything one does becomes Dharma. In this way, one becomes skilled at distinguishing the differences between having and not having the mind of skillful means. Fifth, the instruction like entering a bird's nest is: Just as one first restricts and then comes without hesitation to anything, so too, by relying solely on the words that express symbols (241), one becomes skilled in the inexpressible nature of reality. Sixth, the instruction like a tigress sleeping in her den is: Just as it is difficult for anyone to pass by the side of a tigress sleeping before she has finished giving birth, so too, by knowing the essential point, placing one's own nature in an unfinished state, and placing the meaning upon oneself, one will not be dominated by afflictions. Furthermore, by knowing that body and mind are unrelated, the trace of the mind's vanishing will be cut off. This is the first topic. Now, the second topic explains how, by recognizing the faults of not having trained, one is liberated merely by seeing. The faults of not having trained are: First, if one does not train in the instruction of taming body and speech, the foundation of the three realms will not be exhausted. Therefore, there is a need to be liberated from the three realms by training in it, like being liberated from an iron prison. Second, if one does not train, conceptual thoughts will not transform into the nature of reality. Therefore, there is a need to be liberated from afflictions by training in it, like being liberated from the oppression of a king. Third, if one does not train in the instruction of grasping the essential point and establishing the state of reality as the standard, the root of the mind will not be exhausted. Therefore, there is a need to liberate the activity of the mind from causes and conditions, like King Ligarda being liberated from the curse of the Brahmin. Fourth, if one does not train, one will not find the common and uncommon vehicles, therefore, there is a need to liberate the mind itself from words and terms, like the son of Garuda being liberated from the work of alchemy. Fifth, if one does not train, the phenomena of appearances and signs will be lost in mental images, therefore, there is a need to be liberated from memory, thought, and conceptual terms, like the son of a Naga being liberated from the fear of Garuda. Sixth, if one does not train in the instruction of severing the connection between body and mind, the fault is that one will be dominated by various conceptual thoughts. Therefore, the need is to be liberated from the mental fabrication of view and meditation (243).
