When the land is delightful and abundant, the people are also handsome and have sturdy limbs. They bind their hair in a topknot on their heads, adorned with gold, silver, coral, and so on, and they all wear various white and red cloths. The women tie their hair in knots in the front and back. They adorn themselves with various ornaments of conch shells and bones. (517) In that land, there was a father king named Uparāja and a mother queen named Radiant Light, and they had a daughter named Sudharma, who had not been ordained as a nun for long, nor had she received full ordination as a Bhikshuni for long. Then, one yojana to the west, on an island covered with golden sand, a hut was built of reeds, and a female attendant named Happy Compassion was taking care of her. One night, the goddess who was practicing virtue had a dream: a white man made of precious crystal, as long as a spear, placed a precious crystal vase on the crown of her head, with the letters ཨཱོཾ་(Tibetan, Devanagari: ओम्, Romanized Sanskrit: oṃ, Literal Chinese: 嗡), ཨཱཿ(Tibetan, Devanagari: आः, Romanized Sanskrit: āḥ, Literal Chinese: 啊), ཧཱུྃ་(Tibetan, Devanagari: हुम्, Romanized Sanskrit: hūṃ, Literal Chinese: 吽), སྭཱ་ཧཱ༔(Tibetan, Devanagari: स्वाहा, Romanized Sanskrit: svāhā, Literal Chinese: 梭哈) written on it, as a sign of the five-family empowerment. He sealed it with these and placed it on her head three times, and light emanated from the vase, illuminating the three realms at once. Then, (518) waking up, she was very amazed by the dream and told the maidservant during the hot season. The maidservant said: "Goddess, you will give birth to an emanation." That maidservant was named Peaceful Pūrṇa, a ḍākinī. The goddess thought: "What does that mean?" Then, the goddess became unwell and suffered greatly. After nine months and ten days, the goddess gave birth to a fatherless son from the space of her right rib. When he was born, the Bhikshuni was very frightened and said: "This fatherless son, if he is not a ghost of the world, who is he? Is he a demon of the world or Brahma, etc.? Is he of the lineage of King Tsen or Mu, etc.? In the three realms, who is the one with desire? If he is a god or a non-god in various forms, no one has ever seen an example of this happening. Whose is this country without Dharma? Alas! I am very (519) pure in keeping vows."

Desiring to conquer samsara, he spoke many verses, suffering greatly: "This is a great sin redeemed by beings deluded by wrong views!" Even when the maidservant said, "This is the son of the Buddha," she did not listen, threw him into the ash pit and stirred him, discarding him in the ash pit, whereupon light and sound and so forth appeared. After three days, when they looked, he was making faint sounds and seemed happy. Again, they took him up with a piece of spotless white silk, bathed him with scented water and milk, and took him out. Thinking, "Is this the way of immortality?" as they held him, from the sky the gods chanted auspicious verses: "Protector, Teacher, Bhagavan, Self-nature manifesting, Lord of the world, I also beseech you to protect me, Grant me the Vajra of space!" The dakinis (page 520) massed clouds of offerings, and gods, nagas, yakshas, and so forth rained down sandalwood and saffron. From all directions, the guardians of the world beat great Dharma drums, blew conches, erected victory banners, raised flags, and so forth. The great kings of the sages also massed clouds of immeasurable medicinal substances. Afterwards, when they raised the child, one meal of his nourishment was greater than the nourishment of others for several days combined. Others' two years were equivalent to one month of his. When he was seven years old, the boy said to his mother, "Alas, dear mother! Even if I could offer just one pandita, even if I could ask just one unclear Dharma question, please, mother, allow me." The mother said, "Child, you have not yet weaned from your mouth, what use is the light of Dharma?" The boy (page 521) said, "Please, in any case, allow me," and pleaded repeatedly. The mother said, "From here, one yojana to the east, there is an island called Dhana Kosha, radiant with light. Your own grandfather is the king named Uparaja, and there are five hundred panditas in his place of offering. Go there and request." The mother agreed. Afterwards, the boy was very happy, went to that place, met the king, and prostrated to the king.
