Without mixing with duality, those who speak of the source and merits of emptiness, yet do not practice virtue nor abandon evil, are deviating and straying from the emptiness of dharmata. There are two kinds of true emptiness: sequential emptiness and direct transcendence emptiness. Sequential emptiness is: first, realizing that the external environment is empty, which is external emptiness; then, realizing that the inner mind is empty, which is internal emptiness; then, both internal and external are empty; and emptiness itself is also not established, which is emptiness; great emptiness; ultimate emptiness; conditioned emptiness; transcendence of extremes emptiness; beginningless and endless emptiness; non-abandonment emptiness; self-nature emptiness; all dharmas emptiness; self-characteristic emptiness; imperceptible (179) emptiness; non-entity emptiness; essence emptiness; non-entity essence emptiness; thus, sequentially realizing the eighteen emptinesses is the meaning of dharmata, truly unborn. Direct transcendence emptiness is: dharmata emptiness and reality emptiness. Among them, dharmata emptiness is: each dharmata is empty of its own nature, thus, all appearances are like the eight similes of illusion, originally not established. When appearances are vivid, the basis of dharmata emptiness does not move at all, not exceeding dharmata emptiness. It is said: all arise from the unborn, and at the moment of arising, there is no birth. The dharmata inherent in oneself is empty without reliance, the base, path, and fruit all abide in the nature of one great emptiness, at all times. It is also said: empty from the beginningless original emptiness (180), empty of things, empty of essence. Therefore, dharmata emptiness abides from the root without being modified or disturbed, and the yogi also attains liberation by naturally abiding without modification or disturbance. Reality emptiness is: from the beginning, samsara and nirvana have never been established as two, which is suchness; which is great purity; which is the purity of the three realms; which is the complete liberation of the three worlds; realizing this meaning never changes. Then, what is the way of emptiness?

Emptiness! Profound emptiness has no beginning and no end, so it is not like the nihilistic view of the tirthikas. It is not a discontinuous emptiness, with a beginning but no end. It is not a temporary emptiness, with a beginning but no end. It is not holding the mind to be empty, nor suddenly holding it to be empty, nor gradually making emptiness the path—it is none of these. This is because, since the cause is empty, actions and their ripening are each (181) empty in themselves. Since conditions are empty, all the magical displays of consciousness and mind settle in their own place. Since the ground is empty, the nature of reality transcends being identified as an entity. Since the path is empty, there is no need to strive in view, meditation, and conduct. Since the result is empty, neither samsara nor nirvana is established anywhere. Moreover, since it has been empty from the beginningless, the dharmas of samsara and nirvana do not go beyond emptiness. There are four ways to show the understanding of emptiness: Since all times are realized to be empty, there is a need not to be obscured by actions and activities. Since one does not abide in either extreme of existence or nonexistence, there is a need to be free from hope and fear regarding the result. Since the nature of reality is known to be empty, there is a need for all roots of virtue to be completely perfected without being aided by anything. Having quickly attained complete enlightenment, there is a need not to turn the result back into a cause. What is to be abandoned by emptiness is shown (182) as follows: Since it turns away from existent entities, the reason cannot be established. Since it turns away from nonexistent entities, everything abides in its own state. Since it turns away from non-entities, the one who knows or the act of knowing is liberated by itself. The boundary of emptiness is: It does not fall into the extreme of nonexistence, so the nature of mind, emptiness, is clear from its own ground. It does not fall into the extreme of existence, so the nature of reality, emptiness, has no reason. It is free from the distinctions of above and below. Alternatively, it is not existence because there is no entity. It is not nonexistence because from that very essence of knowing and clarity, that which is not stirred up by the conceptual thought of grasping and fixation is called emptiness. Eliminating the fault of doubt from that very emptiness: Unmistaken emptiness is correct, and this is known through scripture. Through reasoning, the reason and argument have been established above. Established. It goes to the essential point of the pith instruction. From the tantras of scripture, it naturally arises: Because it is free from cause and condition, it abides in emptiness. Thus it is said. Also, in the Garland of Pearls (183): Emptiness is inexpressible wisdom. Emptiness is not the domain of the mind. Thus it is said. Illu-
