Having made a fierce effigy, put the bones of three animals—human, horse, and dog—into the heart, wrap it with (345) pieces of cloth, and on the eleventh day at dusk, dig a hole eighty paces to the south and bury it, calling out one's own name three times and acting as if crying. If there is only the neck and above, burn a thorn bush pyre in the southeast, the number corresponding to the age, and recite raṃ (藏文, Sanskrit Devanagari: रं, Sanskrit Romanization: raṃ, Chinese literal meaning: Rang) the number of times corresponding to the age. If there is only the waist and above, write one's own year and the name of the astrological year, along with laṃ (藏文, Sanskrit Devanagari: लं, Sanskrit Romanization: laṃ, Chinese literal meaning: Lang), in the center of a four-finger-wide piece of paper. Write yaṃ (藏文, Sanskrit Devanagari: यं, Sanskrit Romanization: yaṃ, Chinese literal meaning: Yang) to the east, raṃ (藏文, Sanskrit Devanagari: रं, Sanskrit Romanization: raṃ, Chinese literal meaning: Rang) to the south, ai (藏文, Sanskrit Devanagari: ऐ, Sanskrit Romanization: ai, Chinese literal meaning: Ai) to the west, and khaṃ (藏文, Sanskrit Devanagari: खं, Sanskrit Romanization: khaṃ, Chinese literal meaning: Khang) to the north, and attach it to one's nose. Then, naked and with disheveled hair, run in all four directions at midnight, uttering many irrelevant things such as "You take it away," "The fox is watching," and then bury the paper in the cemetery. If there is no upper body, burn the names of the twelve years in the fire. If there is no lower body, go to the cemetery and offer smoke from various bones. If the right side of the body is missing, make tsatsas and stupas, the number corresponding to the age. If the left side is missing, recite the five dhāraṇīs, the number corresponding to the age. If the connection between heaven and earth is severed, read scriptures and strive for virtue. If the person does not fall, perform the mandala ritual (346), the number corresponding to the age. If a tree breaks, prepare medicine and practice wind meditation. If the semen is lost, make images of the twelve years out of clay, and together with tsatsas, effigies, and a tiger pyre, send them to the northeast cemetery when the sun has completely set. If it is black and tattered, mix iron or copper powder with various grains and scatter them in all four directions. If there are red spots, make a fierce effigy, the number corresponding to the age, insert a female leopard's dart, and mix it with various bones at the eastern crossroads and send it away. If the smoke ceases, write the seed syllables of the five elements on a horse's skull, and send it to the west when the sun is a spear's length away, making many horse sounds. If the sound of the ears ceases, contemplate yaṃ (藏文, Sanskrit Devanagari: यं, Sanskrit Romanization: yaṃ, Chinese literal meaning: Yang) in the heart, and when the eyes turn upwards, have someone bathe the crown of the head with a vase of amrita water. If there is a "shwa shwa" sound, send a torma of various foods, the number corresponding to the age, along with the names of the twelve years, to the base of a single-trunked tree. If the leaves of the tree stand up, strive for tsok and torma offerings. For internal signs of death, practice vase breathing and perform as much virtue as possible. For secret signs of death (347), perform three times more virtuous deeds than before, perform life release, and

And, longevity practices, etc., if done for a certain number of years, or more than that, will avert obstacles. Likewise, in the instructions of profound essence, by the virtue of clearly setting forth, may all beings instantly enter the path of great bliss and liberation, and completely triumph over the Lord of Death and demons! This is called "The Mirror of Mindfulness for Averting Death." The supreme vehicle's yogi, Longchen Rabjam, at the summit of Gangri Thökar (White Skull Snow Mountain), thinking of the benefit of future generations, has completed this well. Om! The Small Whispered Transmission, Wisdom's Self-Appearance, is here. I prostrate at the feet of the Lama who clearly reveals the profound and vast meaning of the unsurpassed essence. From the three stages of the Thigle (Bindu) Supreme Secret Whispered Transmission, compiling the instructions, Wisdom's Self-Appearance is set forth. From the three divisions of the spontaneously perfect Great Perfection, the category of pith instructions also has outer, inner, and secret aspects. In connection with the Heart Essence, from the direct experience of luminosity, I write down the practice of the wordless whispered transmission (348). Here, the meaning instructions of the Thigle Secret category, the pinnacle of all vehicles, have three aspects: the history of the lineage, the instructions arising from it, and the extremely important sealing with commitment. First, it was taught by the glorious Samantabhadra to Vajrasattva. He taught it to the great teacher Garab Dorje. He taught it to Manjushrimitra. He taught it to Shri Singha. He taught it to Jnanasutra. He taught it to Vimalamitra. He taught it to Nyang Tingdzangpo. He taught it to Pelgyi Lodrö Wangchuk. He taught it to Dro Rinchen Barwa. He taught it to the Abbot Lhangma Lhungyal. He taught it to Lhetsün Sengé Wangchuk. He taught it to Shangpa Repa. He taught it to Zaptön Chöbar. He taught it to Dampa Gyerzhik. He taught it to Nyan Tön Sherab Tsemö. He taught it to the two incarnate brothers of Nyamme Yönten Gang. He taught it to Lama Namkhai Dorje. He taught it to Lama Dampa Kumaraja. He bestowed it upon Longchen Rabjam. Second, the instructions arising from it have three aspects: taking the preliminary practices to heart, the main practice of recognizing one's own nature, and how to maintain appearances afterwards. (349) First, among the seven methods of mind training, the first is to open the door of blessings, training the mind in the yoga of the guru with devotion: sitting comfortably on a seat, taking refuge and generating bodhicitta. Above one's crown, on a lotus and sun disc, the root guru and all the lineage gurus dissolve, remaining.
