Now there is no problem. With or without a red bindu, death will occur within nine days. Sixth, observe whether the sun sets at the peak of Mount Meru: if the light of the eyes is still present, there is no problem. (336) If not, death will occur within three days. Seventh, observe the lion's roar within Mount Meru: if the self-sound heard when the ears are blocked is like the sound of a drum, there is no problem. If it is like the sound of a great wind, death will occur within seven or eleven days. If there is no sound, death will occur within five days. Eighth, observe the knot of the wish-fulfilling tree: if no hair stands up from the demon door at the back of the head, there is no problem. If seven hairs stand up, death will occur within seven days. Ninth, observe the trunk of a tree at the boundary of a mountain valley: observe the pulse; if the arteries and the life-force pulse of the hands and feet disappear, death will occur within seven days. Second, observe the inner winds: when the sun rises, if the breath of the mouth and nose repeatedly becomes coarse during exhalation and inhalation, death will occur within six months. If there is no radiance of wind at the tip of the nose, death will occur within seven days. If the wind of the eyes weakens and tears flow, death will occur within five days. If the nipples of the chest collapse and the winds of the four seasons decline, death will occur within sixteen days. Other signs of the winds are like observing the body of another. Third, observe secret wisdom: as a sign of the lamp dissolving into the dharmadhatu, the light of the eyes disappears. (337) Furthermore, being more unhappy than before, knowledge and character change, faith and other qualities that were not present suddenly arise, the pure appearances and devotion that were present disappear, the mind becomes coarse and attachment increases, the temperament becomes sometimes gentle and sometimes harsh, non-dharma thoughts increase in the mind, and clinging to permanence increases. In dreams, one always dreams of the sun setting and dusk falling, and in empty valleys, empty plains, and empty villages, one feels unhappy being alone, goes elsewhere seeking a dwelling, wears red clothes and goes to the west, climbs a red stupa, picks red flowers, meets with the dead, talks and eats and drinks together, is seen off by others, rides backwards on a donkey, lives in a mud city without doors, lives in a crow's nest, and so on, repeatedly (338) dreams these things. These are the sequence of signs of death within three years. The most rapid is earth dissolving into water.

Earth dissolves, the body becomes heavy. Water dissolves into fire, causing nasal discharge. Fire dissolves into wind, causing heat to dissipate. Wind dissolves into consciousness, causing external and internal breath to cease, resulting in a momentary faint. Consciousness dissolves into space, remaining in a state of non-conceptualization. Space dissolves into clear light, which is understood to be the sequence of the arising of wisdom appearances. Thus are the signs of the arising of the King of Time. Since it is the nature from birth itself, seize the stronghold of the essence in the unborn meaning. At the time of death, may you have the confidence to be fearless. By the virtue of thus arranging, may all beings attain the state of the Immortal King. This Dharma tradition was arranged by Longchen Rabjam on the neck of the White Skull Snow Mountain. This concludes "The Mirror of Remembering the Signs of Death," which was made exceedingly clear from the previous writings by the supreme vehicle yogi Longchen Rabjam. May all be auspicious! The Mirror of Death-Defying Remembrance (339) is present. Possessing skillful means and compassion, first, with faith, I prostrate and write the Mirror of Death-Defying Remembrance, a method for abiding in leisure and endowment. It has two parts: general deception and specific deception. The first is to perform gatherings and offerings to the root guru, strive in the activities of the two accumulations, meditate on the path of generation and completion, and learn about various interdependent connections. The interdependent connection is to write on paper a five-fold wheel with four spokes and a surrounding circle, with རཾཿ (藏文,梵文天城体ram,梵文罗马拟音ram,汉语字面意思:让)ཡཾཿ(藏文,梵文天城体yam,梵文罗马拟音yam,汉语字面意思:扬)ཁཾཿ(藏文,梵文天城体kham,梵文罗马拟音kham,汉语字面意思:康)ལཾཿ(藏文,梵文天城体lam,梵文罗马拟音lam,汉语字面意思:朗)ཨེཿ(藏文,梵文天城体em,梵文罗马拟音em,汉语字面意思:唉) at the center. Also, write those respective syllables on the spokes, and write the vowels and consonants on the surrounding circle. Change the colors to the five elements, generate them as the deities of the five elements, and offer them. Consecrate it thoroughly with the essence of interdependence. After reciting auspicious verses, place it in five conjoined bowls and wrap it with five-colored wool threads. Mix earth, water, fire, wood, and the saliva of animals of different species such as horses and cattle into a dough, and make a human figure (340) one cubit in length. Write རཾཿ in the eyes, ཡཾཿ in the ears, ཁཾཿ in the nose, ལཾཿ in the tongue, and ཨེཿ in the heart, and insert them. Make effigies of red, yellow, white, black, green, and variegated colors. Arrange them in rows, and in between, embed various grains and jewels. Adorn with sky, bells, five-colored wool threads, and feathers of ill-omened birds.
