Even if the benefit is small, There may still arise some who have remnants of practice, For the sake of making it easy for them to understand, I will explain. My mind is now joyful in the peaceful forest, May I go to the mountain cliffs of medicinal trees, flowers, and clear water, And to the place with snowy mountains and moonlight, May I meditate alone on this profound Dharma. May I, in a place surpassing the joyful gardens of the gods, In that excellent abode of the righteous ones, Touch the Bodhi of liberation throughout my life, And spontaneously accomplish the two benefits of self and others. The Essential Instructions on the Meaning of the Luminous Heart Essence, called. By the yogi of the Great Perfection of Naturalness, Longchen Rabjampa (Klong chen pa). Perfectly composed on the mountain slope of Pal Lha-le-bab at the foot of the White Skull Snow Mountain. May the glorious and powerful Mantra Queen, and, The King of the Planets, Rahula, and, The Oath-bound Vajra Lekpa protect this teaching. If there are any discrepancies or alterations in the text, may they be punished by oath. Do not show it to those who are not vessels. May this teaching be given to those who are fortunate (371). The essential instructions on Trekchö (khregs chod) Leap-over and Yebab Sorzhak (ye bab sor bzhag) abide. Primordially utterly peaceful, free from all disturbances, Naturally unmoving, clear and vast, I prostrate to the self-knowing awareness of each individual, I will write the essential instructions on Trekchö, Yebab Sorzhak. There are three aspects to it: the preliminary, demolishing the house of the mind; the main part, recognizing one's own face of awareness; the subsequent, instructing on how to maintain the experience. There are three in the first: examining the three of arising, abiding, and ceasing; examining one and different; examining directly seeing one's own face. In the first, there are also two, examining the object: This mind-essence, which arises and appears as thoughts, like affirmation and negation, does it suddenly arise, or, at the time of arising, do the external appearing objects, earth, water, fire, wind, etc., arise from the time of shining? Do they arise from one's own body? Analyze those two with reason, and when they are finally broken down into indivisible particles, from where (372) do they arise? Likewise, now when thoughts arise, where do they abide? When they normally disappear and cease, where do they go, inward or outward? If you think they disappear, they are also broken down into particles, and when there is no substance, from where do they arise? Where do they abide and cease? Thus, when examined, that object is also like an illusion, like a moon in water, and when there is actually no substance, from where does it arise, abide, and cease? Because it is not an external object, it does not arise from the object of the mind.

Now, the conceptual thought that apprehends is purified like the sky. By realizing the nature of reality as primordially empty and devoid of substance, the object is liberated into non-arising. Then, examining the subject, the mind: When it arises as memory and awareness, although it does not arise from an object, does mind arise from mind, abide in mind, and cease and dissolve into mind? If you think so, it becomes a fault that two parts of mind exist in one instant: the mind that arises and the mind that causes arising, the place of arising and the causer of arising, the place of cessation or dissolution and the dissolver, there is the fault of being two and two. If it is one, (373) then two parts cannot occur at the same time, because it is contradictory for one essence to have different entities at the same time. If you think that mind arises from mind, does mind arise from a ceased mind or a non-ceased mind? According to the first, it would become arising from nothing, because cessation is past and is nothing. If you assert that, then mind would become arising from no cause, because that is impossible. According to the second, mind would become permanent, because it arises from its own cause that has not ceased. When the result exists, the cause exists without ceasing. Furthermore, does mind arise from the previous mind? Do the previous mind and the present mind meet or not meet? If they meet, then that mind of the instant of meeting at that time either becomes past, because it is the mind that meets with the same essence as the previous one. Or the previous mind does not cease and exists at that time, because it is the mind that meets with the same essence as the first instant of the present (374). Similarly, if mind abides in mind, there is the fault of the present mind having two parts, a place of abiding and an abider, in an instant. Thinking of dissolving? Then there is one mind that ceases, and one mind that causes cessation, there is the fault of becoming two parts at one time. If you say that mind exists, then you, the realist, what is the essence of your mind? What is its shape and color? Where does it exist, inside, outside, or in between the body? If none of these exist, then how do you know that mind exists? Does that mind say: "I am mind"? When mind arises, is there writing that says "It is mind" at that time? If you think so yourself, then this vague memory and awareness is what you have labeled as mind. It does not say that, nor is it written. I...
