Therefore, it seems that the mind has settled on a target. Therefore, it is necessary to be able to transform any target. Entering the path is like the movement of a caterpillar. As far as one can see, thinking of Hūṃ (ཧཱུྃ, हूँ, hum, 吽) and going forward. At each turning point, recite Hūṃ (ཧཱུྃ, हूँ, hum, 吽). From the invisible, go beyond until you cannot return. Thinking of mountains and valleys, etc., recite Hūṃ (ཧཱུྃ, हूँ, hum, 吽) for a long time. This will produce a relaxed awareness. Therefore, it is necessary for wisdom to reach its limit. Thus, there are two necessities for the preliminary practice of speech. First, the common necessity is: to reverse the attachment to speech, to pacify obstacles, and the commonality of these two is: to purify the sins of speech. The supreme necessity is: that speech does not fall into samsara, that it is liberated in the Sambhogakaya, and the commonality of these two is: that the speech of all Buddhas becomes inseparable from the Vajra. Third, the preliminary practice of mind is: As stated in the Root Wisdom: The mind's first place of arising, the middle place of dwelling, and the final place of going. Thus, by constantly examining these three, one can tame the mind and understand the nature of the mind. Therefore, examine the three places of arising, dwelling, and going. First, examining the place of arising, the one who arises, is: When the mind arises like a flash of lightning, examine it at the moment of its appearance: Does it arise from external appearances? Does it arise from the internal aggregates? Does it arise from existence? Does it arise from non-existence? Like this, divide it into particles and see where it arises from. Does mind arise from mind? What kind of self-nature can be grasped in that mind itself? Is there inside and outside? Is there permanence and annihilation? Are there view, meditation, conduct, and result? Are there color, shape, and name? Examine it like this. Determining that there is no place of arising and no one who arises is to realize emptiness, to be separated from the grasping of realization, and to have no arising from the moment of appearance. It is necessary to recognize the original nature Dharmakaya. The place of dwelling is the external appearance combined with one's own aggregates. The dweller is the awareness that appears now. Examine it as before. What appears as mind, in the clear emptiness of selflessness, appearing in the state of space, is the necessity of recognizing the selfless mind with the Sambhogakaya. The place of going, the one who goes, is also examined in the same way. When thoughts disappear, examine where they have gone. Although it appears as a place of going, it is not actually so.

Because of the awareness of egolessness, there is a need to recognize the Nirmanakaya, which is free from conceptual constructs. Thus, the preliminaries of the mind have two purposes. The common purpose is to reverse the mind's clinging, to pacify obstacles, and to purify sins in general. The supreme purpose is to prevent the mind from entering samsara, to be liberated in the Dharmakaya, and to become inseparably one with the Vajra mind of all Buddhas. Second, settling into a natural state: Relax the body and mind. In the posture of a lion's sleep, like a water mill that has run out of water, in a state of ceasing effort, the body does not move, speech does not speak, and the mind does not think. Then, happiness arises as if resting after exhaustion. Moreover, when the body settles into a natural state, the mind of enlightenment grows. When speech settles into a natural state, the meaning that cannot be expressed arises in the continuum. When the mind settles into a natural state, awareness abides in its own nature. This is the common purpose. The supreme purpose is: the body touches the Nirmanakaya, speech touches the Sambhogakaya (344), and the mind touches the Dharmakaya. Thus, the practice of preliminaries should ideally be for seven days, medium for five or three days, and at least not less than one day, because the recognition of the main practice depends on the proficiency of the preliminaries. The second meaning, the actual practice of the main part, has two aspects: recognizing the mind as primordially empty, free from conceptual constructs, and originally pure, and practicing it through Trekchö (cutting through); recognizing wisdom as spontaneously accomplished in the ground of luminosity, and practicing it through Tögal (direct crossing). The first has three parts. Recognizing the nature of mind in its own place is: the present awareness is free from fabrication, adulteration, and antidotes; the essence is beyond conceptual grasping; awareness is not established as an object; the great wisdom of emptiness and clarity, self-arising, transcends memory, thought, and intellect; this is the intention of the Dharmakaya, which is originally pure. As it is said in the "Sound Tantra": "The limit of great original purity, all phenomena are left in their own place, because appearance and awareness, and Dharmata are in union, original liberation is immediately liberated." The intention transcends the intellect, appearances are pure in their own place, the limits of emptiness and existence (345) are liberated, movement ceases, there is no conceptual thought, intellect ceases, and it transcends the mind. Thus, the present awareness, without fabrication or adulteration by memory or thought, is spread out openly, clearly, and plainly. This is recognized as self-arising wisdom.
