Initially, entering the field of taming afflictions, intense renunciation and aversion arise. In the middle, whatever appears is used for self-liberation, thereby abandoning hope and fear, rejection and acceptance. When afflictions manifest, they are actually abandoned, and appearances and mind become the nature of reality. Ultimately, whatever appears becomes complete liberation, the four times abide in the nature of reality, and awareness transcends any direction, so realization transcends meditation sessions. All of this is called the practice of "staring at appearances," because when staring at appearances, one is liberated from the duality of rejection and acceptance. Such realization is called the realization of establishing the basis of existence, because it trains the power of awareness to radiate outward. This is also because appearances arise from the nature of reality of the basis, so it is called "establishing." In reality, the nature of reality has no arising or ceasing, and is immutable. Similarly, afflictions arise and are liberated, purified without any sequence, so it is called the practice of "unabandoned, primordially liberated." The fourth meaning is about the yogi who continuously practices the fruition, which also has three aspects. First, recognizing the fruition, which is the self-knowing, primordially enlightened fruition, the great spontaneously accomplished one, abiding within oneself. When training power on the basis of recognizing self-nature, afflictions become self-purified and self-liberated. Self-knowing awareness clearly manifests nakedly, liberated from hope, fear, fabrication, and disguise, just like the sun liberated from clouds, or like illusion being non-conceptual in itself, and not regressing like the first, like the fruit of the thorny elm, and abiding in the immutable self-nature, gaining autonomy, like a king receiving empowerment from the crown of the royal family. The nature of the fruition is the realm of luminosity and purity, and when this is recognized, defilements become increasingly purified, until completely free from all defilements, all of which are called fruition here. From its essence, like the mandala of the sun, there has never been defilement, so it speaks of the place of primordial liberation, but in the middle, due to external obscurations, like clouds, during the period when one has not separated from the ordinary samsaric body, speech, and mind, because the realm possesses the obscuration of mind, it is called sentient being. On the path, by meditating on the meaning of being free from all mind, intellect, and consciousness, defilements will self-purify, and the purified part is the fruit of separation, which is the temporary four appearances, and ultimately (413) dissolving into the dharmadhatu.
