In sleep, various illusions of habit arise, like mixing two crystal lights, placing white light on various white and red lights. Regarding the appearance of self-nature, due to the illusion of perceiving compassion, the mind mixes day and night, causing attachment to appearances to arise. Therefore, recognize that it arises from the mind. Then, with the analogy of immovability, recognize that these two are the single Dharma nature of non-abandonment and non-acceptance. Illusion arises from conditions, like crystal light; various things appear, like crystal light; although appearing, the essence is unchanging, like crystal light; inexhaustible and without increase, like crystal light. Thus, recognize it. Second (175), there are three methods for practicing during illusion: First, when sentient beings individually experience the cycle of past and future lives during illusion, the wisdom of the bardo resides in the body, like placing a butter lamp in a woman's womb to recognize it. The oil and wick, the red and white bindus, are metaphors for the wisdom of ignorance. Then, the body is formed, and the time of dwelling is like crystal. The meaning is the wisdom of the heart. It is recognized by the lamp. Wisdom is in the heart. The triple wisdom, the breath of the lungs, and the sound of wisdom meet, which is a metaphor for the arising of power and mind. Recognize it as the white light arising from one direction of the five lights. The mind sinks into the basis of thought and abides immovably. The white light merges into the five lights and does not move, symbolizing the liberation of the mind into wisdom. Also, the white mind is the sixth metaphor, called "mind." The five lights are metaphors for wisdom. The self-luminous, unobstructed sound appears in the sky. The basic (176) clinging awareness abides within the compassion of the heart. The clinging awareness of characteristics, its power enters the lungs, which are the various thoughts scattered to external objects. The awareness of external appearances is the Vajra chain, which is called awareness of the sound of awareness. Therefore, the nature of awareness abiding in the heart is meaning. As a sign, when the eyes are pressed, the lamp of empty bindus appears, therefore believe it. At that time, there are two methods for practicing: First, the preliminary practice is to contemplate the substantial dream as illusion with the eight metaphors of illusion. This present appearance appears meaningless, like last night's dream. Think that it is not established in essence, it is a dream, it is illusion. Do not be distracted for even a moment in your heart. When sleeping, recite the syllable Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Chinese literal meaning: 吽) in your heart. The wisdom of grasping resides in the compassion of the heart. The energy of this wisdom, characterized by its nature, flows outward. Conceptual objects appear, and the wisdom of their appearance, like a vajra chain, is called the radiance of wisdom. This wisdom, dwelling in the heart, is essentially reality. When visualized as a symbol, an empty point appears in the eyes like a rising lamp, inspiring confidence. At this time, there are two methods of practice: First, the preliminary practice involves contemplating dreams as illusions using the eight metaphors of illusion. These appearances, like last night’s dream, seem real but lack substance; one realizes their essence is unestablished, recognizing them as dreams or illusions, contemplating without distraction for even a moment. At bedtime, hold the blue “Hūṃ” syllable in the heart, and upon sleeping, dreams also appear as illusions. Recognizing dreams, attachment and aversion, cessation and accomplishment, actions, practices, and all movements as dreamlike illusions, one does not cling to reality or engage in cessation or accomplishment. Based on this, contemplate illusions, mirages, echoes, gandharva cities, magical creations, water-moons, and mirages without distraction for even a moment. At bedtime, focus the mind on a clear orb of light in the heart; through such practice, no attachment, acceptance, rejection, or doubt arises inwardly or outwardly. The main practice is direct realization, meditating day and night on the lamp of self-arisen wisdom: the superior attain complete liberation, the medium reach the intermediate state, and the lesser naturally dissolve into emanation. Third, the practice in the intermediate state has three aspects: First, gathering the elements; during fainting, realization comes by suppressing waves. Next, sound, light, and rays manifest as music and radiance at that time, leading to realization. Next, distinguishing mind and wisdom, the radiance of wisdom shifts, like crystal light dividing into two, with white light and five lights appearing, leading to realization. Next, the radiance shifts, and wisdom manifests outwardly, like a lamp held by a person, leading to realization. Next, the five lights pervade appearance and existence, like seeing light without covering the eyes, leading to realization. Next, peaceful and wrathful deities appear, like masks and thangkas, leading to realization. Next, the four wisdoms combine, like knots of colored thread, leading to realization. Next, the spontaneous precious jewel, like the sun, moon, and stars in the sky…
