The three of the body are: externally, worldly activities such as trade, agriculture, and various other things; internally, inferior virtues such as prostrations and circumambulations; and secretly, abandoning distractions and busyness, and dwelling alone. Speech also has three aspects: externally, various worldly idle talks; internally, recitations and sutra readings; and secretly, refraining from all speech and remaining like a mute. Mind also has three aspects: externally, various worldly deluded thoughts; internally, various thoughts of Dharma practice; and secretly, refraining from the arising and ceasing of various conceptual thoughts, and dwelling in a state free from memory, thought, and conceptualization. The benefit of abandoning activities in this way is stated in "Vast Expanse of Clarity": When the delusions of body and speech cease, wisdom will abide in the continuum. The fault of not abandoning is stated in the same text: If the unconditioned does not abide in the continuum, there will be no touching of the meaning of awareness. The necessity of abandoning activities in this way has two aspects: temporarily, by abandoning the activities of body, speech, and mind, the three—body, speech, and mind—do not follow delusion; ultimately, there is the necessity of quickly arising the uncontaminated (365) wisdom. If one does not abandon in this way, there will be faults contrary to this. The standard is not to engage in any of the three doors. If one ends one's life below this standard, some will encounter this Dharma in the future and attain complete Buddhahood. Most will undoubtedly be liberated in the state of primordial purity in the bardo. Secondly, regarding the way to guard the essential points of the three doors, there are three essential points of body, speech, and mind. First, one should not deviate from the three postures and three ways of looking. As stated in "Transcending Thought": The essential points of manifestation are body, speech, and mind; the respective essential points must be followed. Moreover, this body is the three kayas, and one should not constantly deviate from them. Also, as stated in "Vast Expanse of Clarity": Even if awareness abides in the body, if it is not subdued by the mandalas of samsara and nirvana, it cannot appear as the basis of wisdom. Also, as stated in "The Lamp That Illuminates": The support of awareness is the body; without the body, there is no awareness; if there is a body, there is definitely wisdom. That which exists in the body in this way, with the characteristic of the generality of phenomena, from the crown of the head to the soles of the feet, cannot be found by analyzing with various kinds of investigations. It cannot be found by looking and analyzing with various kinds of calculations such as divination and astrology. So, how can one ascertain it?

If there is not, then what is it? It is not completely absent, if body and speech are full, then it will appear. For example, blood pervades the whole body, but some foolish people, looking for blood everywhere on the body, find nothing. Then, is there no blood on the body? It is not that there is no blood on the body, but it pervades everything and depends on blood. Just as a person with skillful means, cutting the pulse will bleed, so is the wisdom dwelling in the body. So it is said. The key point is actually, in the 'Thal Gyur' it says: The body is the way the three bodies abide, and should not be changed frequently. And in 'After Death' it says: Take the posture of an elephant and a sage. And in 'Mani Garland' it says: There are three kinds of body postures, one should abide like a lion, an elephant, and a sage. Therefore, first is the posture of the Dharmakaya, like a lion: sitting on the cushion like a dog, with the soles of the feet facing each other. Knees spread outwards, and both palms (367) pressed on the ground, holding the thumbs. The upper body is as upright as a lion, the neck slightly raised upwards, and the eyes are fixedly looking at the space between the eyebrows. The posture of the Sambhogakaya, like an elephant lying down: lying face down on the cushion, with knees and chest together. Both elbows pressed on the ground, and both palms supporting the chin, fingers touching the cheeks. Straighten the back, and the eyes squinting at the sky. The posture of the Nirmanakaya, like a sage squatting: squatting on the cushion with legs together, hands around the waist or knees. Straighten the spine, and the eyes half-closed, gazing at the space. The benefit of doing so is, in the 'Thal Gyur' it says: The posture of the Dharmakaya is like a lion, away from all the fears of delusion, one will see with the Vajra eye. The posture of the Sambhogakaya is complete, relying on the elephant lying down, enjoying the meaning of Dharmata, one will see with the lotus eye. The posture of the Nirmanakaya is, relying on the sage squatting, (368) Dharmata appears and self-arises, one will see with the Dharma eye. So it is said. The fault of not focusing is, in the 'Klong Sal' it says: If the key points of the body are not focused, the elemental winds cannot be controlled, and the body will be stiff
