Although it is said, in summary, all vehicles ultimately converge into the ultimate Great Perfection teachings. Within that, there are countless outer, inner, and secret aspects, but the most secret, unsurpassed Vajra Essence vehicle converges into the Manifest Heart Essence. As it says in the "Vast Expanse of Clarity": "The teacher, the Great Compassionate One, taught many vehicles to tame beings, but they all converge into the most secret Great Perfection." Therefore, here, the cause for engaging in the instructions is shown through seven characteristics, which is one. The instructions on the basis of the five perfections are briefly explained, which is two. The instructions on the ground, path (5), and fruition are explained in detail, which is three. Among these, the first is the characteristics of the lama, the characteristics of the disciple, the characteristics of how to teach, the characteristics of the companion, the characteristics of the resources, the characteristics of the place, and the characteristics of the time, which are seven. The lama to be relied upon is: In general, one who is skilled in all the teachings of the great and small vehicles and can teach others; in particular, one who is skilled in the secret mantra Vajrayana and has produced signs of accomplishment in the generation and completion stages; one who has little attachment to self and desire, and who delights in dwelling alone in solitude, having abandoned worldly activities; one who is skilled in the meaning of the Manifest Heart Essence and has obtained signs of warmth in the three aspects of view, meditation, and conduct; one who possesses the measure of liberation in any of the three: this life, the next life, or the bardo; one who possesses the mind of enlightenment, benefiting others without weariness; one who has great waves of wisdom, teaching the Dharma according to the wishes of whatever disciples are to be tamed; and one who is without pride and arrogance. As it says in the "Great Arrangement of Ati": "Skilled and free from activities, possessing the meaning of reality and having reached the measure, not deluded by the objects of desire, these are the characteristics of the secret mantra lama." (6) Thus, by relying on a lama who possesses these characteristics, all good things will be accomplished temporarily, and ultimately the state of Buddhahood will be attained. As it says in the "Vast Expanse of Clarity": "The lama who possesses the characteristics, by bestowing empowerment, liberates from suffering." Second, the lama to be abandoned is: one who does not possess the qualities mentioned earlier, and in particular, one who does not understand well the words and meanings of the teachings of the great and small vehicles, who is content with only a few aspects of listening, contemplating, and meditating, and who has great pride; one who is ignorant himself and follows the ignorant words of the lama, and who has great faith in that; and one who conceals, hides, and twists the meaning of the secret mantra.
