When making samsara inferior, the karma of being born in a certain place, with the wind and mind gathered in the root essence of that letter, manifests as six different appearances of the six realms of beings. Moreover, having accumulated various good (348) and bad karmas, imprints are left on the six letters, thus attracting future samsara. Therefore, the basis of good and bad karma is the six letters. If the three letters of the three bodies cease (samsara), one can be liberated from the dangerous path of samsara's happiness and suffering, and enter into nirvana. Thus, during the time of recitation, no matter how the subsequent consciousness abides, it should be placed in one's own continuum and observed. The merit of distinguishing root and body in this way is stated in "Vast Expanse of Clarity": "Whoever distinguishes root and body through inner contemplation empties the cause of delusion, the seed of samsara, and the three realms will not revert to samsara." So it is said. The fault of not distinguishing is also stated therein (in "Vast Expanse of Clarity"): "If the seed is not exhausted in this way, the bonds of samsara cannot be severed." So it is said. The necessity of distinguishing root and body through inner contemplation is stated in "Manifestation": "Herein, there are two necessities, to examine through the distinction of common and supreme." So it is said. Also, in "Vast Expanse of Clarity": "The preliminaries of body, speech, and mind, the common, special, and ultimate, should be known as three necessities." So it is said. First, the common necessity is that the seeds of sins of body, speech, and mind are purified from the root, the seeds of obstacles arising from body, speech, and mind are pacified from the root, and the seeds of attachment of body, speech, and mind are (349) ceased from the root. Second, the special necessity is that relying on the cessation of attachment of body, speech, and mind from the root, from now on, there is no seed for body, speech, and mind to revert to samsara, so there is the necessity of definitely not reverting. There is the necessity of body, speech, and mind being liberated into the three bodies. Third, the ultimate necessity is that body, speech, and mind are non-dual with the body, speech, and mind of the Buddha and enter into nirvana. Thus, if the root and body of body, speech, and mind are not distinguished, then because there is the seed of samsara, there is the fault of contradicting the above-mentioned merits. Third, the secret, to settle body, speech, and mind in their natural state, and to restore them to their original state, of these two, first, to settle them in their natural state, in "Burning Lamp" it is said: "Having distinguished the root and body of samsara and nirvana, settle body, speech, and mind in their natural state." So it is said. Also, in "Manifestation" it is said: "At this time, the essence of body, speech, and mind, one endowed with yoga should settle them in their natural state."

Sapa. Having done the above preliminaries, the channels and elements become disturbed, causing the three doors of body, speech, and mind not to enter into the virtuous practice of their very nature. In order to prevent the elements and channels from becoming disturbed, the method of pacifying them (350) is: In the 'After Death' it says: 'Then the three doors of body, speech, and mind, should be skilled in pacifying them.' Therefore, the three doors of body, speech, and mind should lie down comfortably, stopping all movement, speech, and thoughts, and abiding there relaxed. That is to say, the body is pacified so it does not move, the speech is pacified so it does not want to speak, and the mind is pacified so all thoughts of gathering and scattering naturally subside. If this does not happen, repeat it. The benefit of such pacification is, in the 'Vast Expanse of Clarity' it says: 'Whoever pacifies in this way, the disturbance of elements, diseases, and calamities are pacified, and clinging becomes self-liberated.' So it is said. The fault of not pacifying is, in the same text it says: 'There is a fault of turning away from the qualities.' So it is said. The necessity is twofold: temporarily, the three doors of body, speech, and mind are pacified, so the elements do not become disturbed and diseases and calamities do not occur, therefore there is a necessity to abide in the samadhi of one's own nature. Ultimately, there is a necessity for the clinging of the three doors of body, speech, and mind to become naturally purified. If one does not pacify in this way, there will be a fault of turning away from the above qualities. Second, restoring to the original state, in the 'Vast Expanse of Clarity' it says: 'In order to realize the meaning of primordial purity (351), after pacifying, restore to the original state.' It means that restoring to the original state from the previous state of viewing is in order to generate the realization of primordial purity in the continuum. The actual practice of restoring to the original state is, in the 'After Death' it says: 'The Shravaka, Bodhisattva, and Wrathful One, also restore with their own way of viewing, therefore all three are restored, and they will strive in practice.' Therefore, first, the Shravaka's way of viewing is to possess the seven characteristics of Vairochana, abiding in samadhi with one-pointedness, not thinking or saying anything. Thus, in the 'Vast Expanse of Clarity' it says: 'The Shravaka's peaceful way of viewing, pacifies the three doors of body, speech, and mind.' So it is said. Second, the Bodhisattva's way of viewing is to sit in the lotus position, gazing fixedly into space, with the mind not moving anywhere. In the same text it says: 'The Bodhisattva's way of viewing, obtains the bliss of pacification.' So it is said. Third, the Wrathful One's way of viewing is,
