The flesh of the body feels like boiling, throbbing with prickling sensations, and there is a sense of unpaid taxes. Repeat until this feeling arises. This pacifies the diseases and evil influences of the inner aggregates, and there is a need for the aggregates to be liberated into a body of light. The third is seeking suppleness: in front of oneself, erect a sign such as a piece of wood (340), and by uttering the syllable Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུཾ།, 梵文天城體:हुं, 梵文羅馬擬音:hūṃ, 漢語字面意思:吽), entrust awareness to the indestructible, twisting the rope of Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུཾ།, 梵文天城體:हुं, 梵文羅馬擬音:hūṃ, 漢語字面意思:吽) like a coil of thread. If, by uttering Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུཾ།, 梵文天城體:हुं, 梵文羅馬擬音:hūṃ, 漢語字面意思:吽), awareness becomes clear and liberated, it is considered accomplished. This has the need to be able to transform the object into anything, just as harmonious friends can transform the mind. The fourth is entering the path: enter into a blue Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུཾ།, 梵文天城體:हुं, 梵文羅馬擬音:hūṃ, 漢語字面意思:吽) one span in length, where the curves of the drawing are like the crawling of a worm, existing about a span apart. From among visible things such as mountains, imagine going forth like a guest seeking something, entering and going to an invisible place. By uttering a long Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུཾ།, 梵文天城體:हुं, 梵文羅馬擬音:hūṃ, 漢語字面意思:吽), awareness will become relaxed and soft. This has the need to enter into the customs of the path of one's own body and speech. Thus, after uttering all the Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུཾ།, 梵文天城體:हुं, 梵文羅馬擬音:hūṃ, 漢語字面意思:吽) syllables, awareness naturally and loosely abides in a state of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality. On top of that, gently and evenly abide, and observe how awareness exists in your own continuum after those. That is, when uttering Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུཾ།, 梵文天城體:हुं, 梵文羅馬擬音:hūṃ, 漢語字面意思:吽), mind and wind are focused on where they are directed, internally and externally, and therefore, the duration of cessation of conceptual thought is longer than at other times, which is increased by dependent arising. Thus, the need to perform the preliminary practices of speech is also threefold: common, special, and ultimate. The first is to purify all sins of speech, to obtain the above qualities through the actions of speech, to pacify obstacles of speech, and to reverse attachment to speech. The second is that, because attachment to speech is reversed, speech will no longer revert to samsara, and there is a need for speech to be liberated into the Sambhogakaya. The third is that speech is non-dual with the Vajra speech of all Buddhas, and there is a need to pass into nirvana in the primordial state. Thus, if the preliminary practices are not performed, there will be faults contrary to them. Third, the preliminary practices of mind also have two aspects. The first is distinguishing the root.

After that, it says, "In order to perform the preliminary practice of mind, one should take the suffering of the six realms to heart." This means that the mind was originally the Dharmakaya, but because it did not recognize it, it wandered in samsara. In order to prevent it from wandering in samsara from now on, the mind and (342) samsara are separated. That is, go to a secluded valley where no one lives, and think that now, for the benefit of sentient beings, separate the mind, samsara, and nirvana, and vow not to retreat. Put all the happiness and suffering of the six realms on yourself, and think in a way that you experience it. And put the knowledge after these on yourself and observe it. The sign of proficiency is that the mind becomes clear and pure, without confusion, joy arises, and all appearances are filled with the experience of joy and happiness. Repeat until these do not appear. Second, the actual preliminary practice is, as stated in the Madhyamakavatara, "The place where the mind first arises, the place where it dwells in the middle, and the place where it finally goes. If you investigate these three, you will tame the mind and know the nature of the mind." This means that first, investigate the place where the mind arises. From where do the mind arise, from the outer container world or the inner sentient beings? From where do they arise, from emptiness, appearance, existence, non-existence, etc.? Thinking that the mind arises from the nature of mind, observe in this way. If you think it arises from the outer mountains, houses, etc., then break them down into dust and observe them, (343) and you will find that it does not arise from the outer container world. If you think it arises from the inner self, then search from half a body to dust, and you will not find it. It does not arise from emptiness, because it has not arisen or been established. It does not arise from appearance, because even if you search for dust, you will not find it. If you search for it from existence or non-existence, you will not see its essence. The mind does not arise from the mind, and neither the place of arising nor the one who arises are established. When the seeker looks inward at the mind, he finds that the essence is separated from concepts. Because the mind of the one who arises is not established, the concept of the place of arising is also not established. If you search for the place of arising and the cause, you will not find it. This is to determine that the nature of mind is emptiness and is separated from concepts. In this way, because the place of arising of the mind has not been found, and the mind of the one who arises is not established, the cause of the mind's first arising is emptiness. Therefore, the mind is rootless and baseless, and is identified with the unborn Dharmakaya. Second, observe the place where the mind dwells.
