The Hinayana and Sravaka schools hold this view, but the Mahayana school believes that phenomena that appear to exist when they actually don't are like illusions, dreams, and magical creations when habitual tendencies cause delusion. As the noble Nagarjuna said in the Root Wisdom Treatise (p. 136): "Like dreams, like illusions, like cities of gandharvas, so is birth, so is abiding, so is destruction." When a dream appears, land, stones, mountains, horses, cows, forests, and so on appear to be real and existent, but in reality, they are merely the magical manifestations of one's own mind intoxicated by sleep. Therefore, although the delusion of external phenomena appears as the three states of arising, abiding, and ceasing, it should be understood that it is like a dream or illusion, a delusion arising from the play of wisdom. The formation, duration, and destruction of an eon are like the radiance of wisdom, the light of an image, a deluded appearance that judges objects. Understand that appearing without existence is like a dream or illusion. As it is said in the Wisdom Secret Circle: "Delusion in objects is like a dream, in reality, it appears as the play of wisdom." Because of clinging to the light of self-nature, the form of the desire realm with five aggregates, five senses, five essences, and five limbs arises, as well as the form of the clear light form realm (p. 137) that appears but does not inherently exist, and the formless realm of form that is empty and combined with mind. At that time, the light of self-nature also disappears. This is because, in the earlier spontaneously accomplished time, the clinging of the six consciousnesses did not cease, so in the appearance of the six realms of beings, wherever one clung, one mistook the self-appearing object and body as real, and because one did not recognize one's own mind nature, one wandered in samsara forever. This is the suffering and affliction of appearing without existence, like the joys and sorrows of a dream. That dream does not exist when one falls asleep, nor does it exist when one wakes up, but it only exists when one is asleep. Similarly, these various joys and sorrows of deluded appearance do not exist in the original beginning, nor do they exist in the fruition of liberation from delusion, but now various joys and sorrows appear in the city, but in reality they are not established. Therefore, the key to effortlessly attaining liberation when encountering such profound instructions lies in this. So, how do we know that the spontaneously accomplished appearance is a delusion? From then on,

What is the reason for delusion? Or, wouldn't it be good if there were no delusion from the primordial ground? (138) It is not so, because the primordial ground exists in the self-nature liberation of intrinsic clarity, free from delusion. From that, the spontaneously present that arises outwardly, if recognized, will become the basis of liberation for Kuntuzangpo; if not recognized, it will become the basis of delusion for sentient beings, so it is also called uncertain spontaneous presence. It is also called the great ground appearance. Because it appears outwardly as form and wisdom, it is also called the Sambhogakaya appearance. Because the Nirmanakaya appearance arises, it is also called the Nirmanakaya appearance. From here, the basis of delusion is reasonable. As it says in "Lamp Illuminating Awareness": From the beginning, from the primordially pure, undeluded state, uncertain spontaneous presence arises. From that very variety of ways of appearing, the unceasing play, whatever it does, whatever it appears, are countless uncertain appearances. For the impartial minded, seeing is unceasing, intrinsically clear, therefore, grasp it in a definite way. In that ground that exists in that way, the cause and the seeds of delusion are clear and aware knowing. From there, like pouring water, it continuously exists. Until there, it is said to be deluded in samsara. The impartial minded is the one who knows his own face. Seeing without interruption (139) intrinsic clarity is, because the light is outward, seeing is uninterrupted, recognizing it as one's own radiance, distinguishing it in an instant. Intrinsic clarity is enlightenment on the primordial ground. Grasping it in a definite way is seizing a firm position on primordial purity. In short, for such an uncertain spontaneous appearance, because one does not recognize one's own face, awareness itself arises as three kinds of ignorance: ignorance arises towards the three of cause, condition, essence, nature, and compassion. Because the condition of clinging to self arises, which is awareness itself. Because the five lights appear as the condition of the object. When these three gather together, they become the similar, immediately preceding condition, just like mistaking a rope for a snake, mistaking a mirage for water, mistaking a stump for a person. Because of the appearance of self-nature, clinging to the outer light arises inwardly, therefore, one is deluded into the object and body that are similar to that. In terms of essence, from the ignorant emptiness, arises the object that opens up opportunities. In terms of essence, from the knowing but non-conceptual, which is not established anywhere, one is deluded into the alaya-consciousness, the unindicated, which is similar to that. In terms of compassion, from the knowing and clear, (140) arises
