As such, when wisdom fades, one wanders in the darkness of samsara. The fundamental cause is that in the clarity of emptiness, the self-radiance of wisdom (123) exists as a halo of light. From the perspective of awareness, the colors of karmic winds manifest outwardly, but because one does not recognize this as spontaneously perfect wisdom, dualistic clinging arises. This is the beginning of samsara. As stated in the *Madhyamakavatara*: "The cause is one, without a maker, the root of all, Not knowing one's own nature, this is the beginning of samsara." So, how does delusion arise? As stated in the *String of Pearls*: "Because from the mind, thoughts arise, Intrinsic nature is stained by concepts." Therefore, the awareness of appearances is like a mirror. Because one does not recognize its own nature, it becomes mind. Since mind and thought are of the same essence, it is a veil. The awareness of self-born wisdom is stained and corrupted. Because that cause is grasped as an object with self-grasping, it is called the objective condition. From that mind, the grasping of the six consciousnesses arises naturally, and the five elements arise. Because one does not recognize that these are the five wisdoms, one clings to them, and based on that, the five elements gather together. Because of their gathering, one helps the other, and the body is formed. (124) From that, the grasped and the grasper are formed. As stated in the *String of Pearls*: "Because the grasping of the six consciousnesses does not cease, The Dharmakaya itself is also bound by grasping." And as stated in *Klong gsal*: "Wisdom, ignorance, grasps the object, Because of the gathering of grasping, wind, and mind, It enters into the vessel of the five elements, Having entered there, from the arising and ceasing of the elements, The five aggregates of afflictions are formed." From the spontaneously perfect self-radiance of the five elements, the world of endurance is formed by the blessing of wisdom. From the essence of those outer five elements, sentient beings, the inner essence, are formed. Thus, the self-power of mind manifests as the five elements and the five poisons. The appearance of the five poisons gathers in the act of union of father and mother. There, craving and grasping arise, and consciousness enters the womb. As stated in *Klong gsal*: "Because of the union of the five aggregates, The nature of the five afflictions, the six consciousnesses, and The five wisdoms." Thereafter, having been born, due to the delusion of the grasped and the grasper, one always wanders in the four rivers of birth, old age, sickness, and death, and that is the nature of samsara. If the formation of the outer vessel and inner essence is explained in detail, (125) *Klong*

It is said in the 'Gsal' (Clarity Sutra): 'Outer and inner secrets, etc., the actions of waxing, waning, and changing arising.' Therefore, what are the five outer elements—earth, water, fire, wind, and space—and what is the cause of the arising of sentient beings? Initially, empty space, naturally pure, abides inseparable from wisdom, and since it has existed as the nature of wisdom from the very beginning, it is called wisdom. Thus, in that empty, pure space, the self-radiance of wisdom, the five lights, shines brilliantly and spontaneously exists. In it, neither virtue nor vice, samsara nor nirvana, is established, so it is called primordial purity. Because it has existed from the beginning, it is called spontaneous accomplishment. In such a meaning, neither samsara nor nirvana is established. Thus, if it did not exist from the beginning, then even if one practiced, the fruit of wisdom would not arise. Just as churning water does not produce fire. Therefore, wisdom exists in the original state, and although there is confusion in between, ultimately, when confusion is cleared and Buddhahood is attained, one abides in the realm of the Dharmakaya, inseparable from the non-conceptual wisdom of the Rupakaya (126). This is also the key to benefiting sentient beings. Thus, from the state of emptiness, the power of wisdom arises, and the five lights appear. Because there is unceasing awareness, attachment to the five lights arises. That attachment is called wind, which is the compassionate power of inner clarity radiating outward. That is, the compassionate power clings to the five lights, the objects of appearance, and grasps them as distinct. So how are the gross elements established? The self-radiance of the wisdom of individual discernment, red light, is mistakenly grasped as real, and thus red fire arises. In it, the power of wind awareness produces heat. Again, the self-radiance of the wisdom of equality, appearing as yellow light, gives rise to attachment, and thus yellow earth arises. The self-radiance of mirror-like wisdom, appearing as white light, gives rise to attachment, and thus white water arises. The self-radiance of accomplishing wisdom, appearing as green light, gives rise to attachment, and thus green wind arises. The element of space has existed together with wisdom from the very beginning and is without change. Attachment arises to the self-radiance of the lights of wisdom, and thus the four elements—earth, water, fire, and wind (127)—arise. These are pervaded by the power of awareness, wind, and thus accomplish all actions. Thus, attachment arises to the five wisdoms, and thus the elements are truly established. That is, the initial ignorance.
