Appearing upwards like a five or nine-storied building, the hearts of oneself and the assembly deities are connected by rays of light, like a skein of rainbow-colored threads, and one's own body does not appear to have substance (368), but is liberated into the Sambhogakaya. After that, even if one does not practice, it will not change. At that time, the outer appearance is liberated into clear light, so the appearance of substantial earth and stones naturally disappears. The inner illusory body is liberated into clear light, so the mass of flesh and blood naturally disappears. The secret afflictions are liberated into clear light, so the appearance of the two obscurations naturally disappears. More secretly, appearing as body and wisdom, the Akanishta pure land naturally appears. Expanding into supreme wisdom, the mandala of knowable things naturally becomes clear. Thus, when awareness reaches its limit, even if one does not meditate temporarily, it reaches its limit, and ultimately recognizes the Sambhogakaya, so the clinging to the body is naturally liberated. Fourth, the appearance of the exhaustion of dharmata is: the increase and decrease of outer experiential appearances, the exhaustion of the dharma of the inner illusory body, the exhaustion of the mind of the secret collection of realizations, all words and delusions naturally exhaust themselves, and the mind that clings to appearance and non-appearance exhausts itself. From within the light, only a fingernail's worth of appearance remains, and one is separated from the concepts of samsara and nirvana, and appearance does not establish itself as the nature of anything. At that time, one cannot be overcome by the enemies of the elements. There is no appearance of the sun and moon. The concepts of going and staying disappear. Memory is like a madman's, without a trace, and clairvoyance (369) is unobstructed. One abides only in the aspect of compassion. Thus, seeing the appearance of the exhaustion of dharmata has two purposes: temporarily, because one has mastered the extent of the four appearances, one has completed half the journey; ultimately, because one has seen the appearance of the exhaustion of dharma, one is certain to attain Buddhahood without remainder. Second, the way of familiarizing oneself with the four limits is: establishing a foundation on three immovabilities, measuring with three abidings, nailing down with three attainments, and showing the extent of liberation with four grasps. The first is to constantly abide in the three postures of sitting, that is, when the body does not move, the channels do not move. When the channels do not move, the eyes do not move. When the eyes do not move, the wind does not move. When the wind does not move, the mind does not move. Just because of this, the activity ceases, and it is necessary for awareness to abide without wavering. From the three ways of looking with the eyes, one should make them not move, that is, the key point of awareness is the channel, the key point of the channel is the door, and the key point of the door is the lamp.

When the wind moves the lamp, the mind does not move because the lamp does not move. If the mind does not move, conceptual thoughts cannot arise. Therefore, (370) there is a need for indivisibility of awareness and emptiness. Moreover, conceptual thoughts, if examined, are the play of wisdom, but because one does not know one's own nature, they are the nature of samsara. They appear as if they exist, like reflections. The wisdom of compassion is like the surface of a mirror, and as long as it is clear on the outside, reflections appear unceasingly due to various circumstances. If one deliberately grasps with the mind, one is bound, but if one does not grasp, one is liberated. If one grasps, even seeing, meditating, and virtue bind, just as reflections appear without the form being gathered. If one does not grasp, even the five poisons of affliction liberate, just as knowing the key point of reflections does not stain the mirror. When compassion dissolves inward, like turning the back of the mirror outward, no reflections of good or bad appear. On the clear surface of the mirror, the realization of the indivisibility of body and wisdom dwells immovably as one. Second, measuring by the three abidings: Because one abides in awareness and emptiness for a long time, the measure of stability, the three abidings, arises. When the wind that moves external appearances is exhausted, awareness and emptiness abide without coming and going. When the wind that moves the internal aggregates is exhausted, the body abides without movement (371). When the wind that moves secret thoughts is exhausted, conceptual thoughts cannot possibly move and abide. At this time, there are two ways to measure: by measuring with dreams, and by the signs that appear in the three doors of body, speech, and mind. For those of supreme diligence, dreams dissolve into emptiness and the continuum ceases. For those of intermediate diligence, clear light and great bliss appear. For those of lesser diligence, dreams are recognized as dreams and are grasped. The signs that appear in the three doors are three each for the four appearances, totaling twelve. First, the three signs of the manifestation of the nature of reality are: the body is like a turtle placed in a shell, without action or movement, abiding still in one place. Speech is like a mute, unwilling to speak. The mind is like a bird caught by a dakini, appearing to scatter but being held in place. The three signs of the increase of experience are: the body is like a person afflicted with illness, devoid of grooming and adornment. Speech is like a madman, all words are meaningless babble. The mind is like a person poisoned by poison, outward to the three realms.
