In general, it purifies the sins of speech, obtains qualities, and reverses attachment. In particular, speech does not enter samsara again, and is liberated in the Sambhogakaya. Ultimately, it passes into nirvana in the space of Vajra Speech. Thirdly, the preliminaries of the mind also have three aspects: first, tracing the root; second, searching for deficiencies; and third, examining the nature of reality. Tracing the root is: which of the three—body, speech, and mind—wanders in samsara (344)? Who is the agent of all happiness and suffering, affirmation and negation? Which one transmigrates and continues through past and future lives? When contemplating where the master resides, recognizing that the mind is the master is like recognizing a thief. Searching for deficiencies is: examining whether the mind and its object appearance are one or different. That is, are the three—body, speech, and mind—one or different? If they are one, then like body and speech, the mind should also be seen and heard. If they are different, then the body is an indivisible particle, speech is a traceless disappearance, and after the mind disappears like a bird flying without a trace, do the different entity and the agent of difference exist? If examined, because the relationship is not established, it is neither one nor different. Thus, if it is said to be two, and the third aggregate that is not one also collapses along with it, so the establishment of one and different is not even a little. Similarly, when external forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures, and the internal mind are apprehended by the mind, when examining whether the appearing object to be grasped and the apprehending consciousness are one or different, realizing that the interdependent origination without an object is unique, the root of grasping and being grasped is severed, the fortress of dualistic grasping collapses, the appearance of self and other vanishes, the illusion of enemy and friend is (345) pacified, the clouds of affirmation and negation disperse, and one reaches the view of dharmata like the sky. Among the three ways of examining the nature of reality, the first is to examine the place of origin and the originator: when the mind appears on an object, does the mind arise from the object, or does the mind arise from the mind? If the mind arises from the object, if the object is coarse, then because it has not been broken down into indivisible particles, when the object arises, there is no object, so the mind arising from it will not be established. If it is subtle, then examining the color, shape, and parts will not be found. If the mind arises from the mind, then in a single moment, the mind will become two parts, because there are two parts, the place of origin and the originator. Thus, because the mind does not have two parts in a single moment, the mind cannot arise from the mind.

It has not been established. However, if you think it has arisen, does that mind say so? Is there writing? Is it what you think? If it says and writes that, what is it? If you think there is nothing and go there, this appearance is darkness. When you make the thought, do you go there? Therefore, since what is fabricated by the mind is a fabrication, its own nature is not established. Moreover, there is no place of birth or one who is born other than that (346). Since it is established that the mind does not arise in the beginning, one knows the initial exhaustion of the great Dharmakaya beyond mind. The investigation of the place of abiding and the one who abides in the middle is also the same. By examining the nature of the six objects, it is pure like the sky without a basis, and there is no place to abide. By examining the mind of the one who abides, one does not find color, shape, essence, or identification. One does not find the nature of the knowing that grasps. When the delusion of the grasping mind vanishes, one knows the mind itself without a place of abiding, the great clear and pure groundless totality body, the intention of the natural state of reality. Finally, by examining the place of going and the one who goes, the mind that arises on the object is not established. Because it is not born in the beginning, it does not abide in the middle. Since there is no cessation for what does not abide, it is the nature of reality that is free from the three: arising, ceasing, and abiding. It transforms into the great equality of appearance and abiding without distinction. By deciding on the self-liberated Sambhogakaya of awareness and emptiness, there is mental ease in the vast, equal, and boundless realm. Thus, there are three necessities for doing the preliminary practices of the mind. In general, the sins of the mind (347) are purified, qualities arise, and manifest clinging turns into liberation. In particular, one does not fall into samsara later and is liberated in the Dharmakaya, ultimately passing into peace in the realm of the Vajra Mind. Fourth, settling into a natural state: on a comfortable bed, the body is without movement, speech is without speaking, and mind is without thought and concept. Loosen and relax, and sleep naturally. There are three necessities. In general, the elements are not disturbed and there is no disease because the channels and winds are balanced. In particular, samadhi arises naturally, and body and mind are naturally at ease. Ultimately, the clinging of the three doors is naturally liberated. The second meaning, by actually pointing out the face of awareness, directly showing the clear light Dharmakaya, transforming the primordially pure exhaustion of phenomena into the cutting through the base, spontaneously accomplishing clear light.
