The appearance ceases. The inner illusory body is liberated into clear light, thereby purifying the clinging to contaminated aggregates. The secret mind-essence dissolves into clear light, thereby the deluded appearance ceases, and the connection of karma and habitual tendencies is severed. In Longsal, it says: When awareness reaches its limit, the power of appearance liberates the coarse clinging to inner and outer. Thus, having reached the limit, even without practice in the interim, there is still ritual. Ultimately, one recognizes the Sambhogakaya, and thus enjoys it in the pure land of the Sambhogakaya. The fourth appearance, the exhaustion of dharmata, is: the increase and decrease of outer experiential appearances, the exhaustion of the dharma of the inner illusory body (618), and the exhaustion of the mind of secret conceptual thoughts, thereby all deluded appearances are self-purified, and the mind that clings to appearance and non-appearance is exhausted, and only a fingernail-sized appearance remains in the light, free from the concept of samsara and nirvana. Since appearance is not established as the essence of anything, it cannot be overcome by the enemies of the elements. The appearance of going and staying is purified. There is no obstruction to clairvoyance. From the aspect of compassion, the appearance of wisdom is clear and uninterrupted, and the defilements of the aggregates do not return, and after becoming a Buddha, one benefits beings with a great transference body like a water moon. In Thalgyur, it says: Thus, after the arising of the body is interrupted, the contaminated aggregates do not appear, and one becomes manifestly enlightened here. Thus it is said. Temporarily, one attains the measure of the four appearances and divides the boundary. Ultimately, one sees the appearance of the exhaustion of dharma and becomes enlightened without remainder. Secondly, the way of familiarizing with the four supports. In Longsal, it says: (619) The four support instructions, there is no way to be without them behind the guru. Thus it is said. Establishing the foundation on the three immovables. Measuring with the three abidings. Nailing down with the three attainments. Showing the measure of liberation of the four confidences. The first is said in Thalgyur: Have faith in these four supports. By establishing the foundation on the three immovables, the wind-mind reaches the essential point. Thus it is said. One should remain immovable in the three ways of sitting. That is, if the body is immovable, the channels are immovable. If the channels are immovable, the eyes are immovable. If the eyes are immovable, the wind is immovable. If the wind is immovable, the mind is immovable. By this, the moving conceptual thoughts are interrupted, and awareness abides without movement. One should remain immovable in the three ways of looking with the eyes. That is, the essential point of awareness is the channel, the essential point of the channel is the door, and the essential point of the door is the lamp. If the channels are not moving (620), the eyes are not moving. If the eyes are not moving, the door is not moving.

The key is that by calming the mind, there will be no arising of discursive thoughts, and there is the necessity of wisdom and the Dharmadhatu being inseparable. Awareness is that from the direct seeing of the clear light appearance, one should not waver. That is to say, compassionate awareness manifests outwardly like a clear mirror, and the clear light appearance arises without interruption. Without being tainted by grasping at subject and object, by letting it arise and dissolve on its own, the doors of the four appearances will become clearer and more stable. Second, measuring with the three abidings, as mentioned before: "By measuring with the three abidings, dreams reverse, body, speech, and mind, signs and measures are definitely grasped." Therefore, due to the unwavering abiding of wisdom, three stable measures arise. The wind that moves external appearances is exhausted, and wisdom abides without coming and going. The wind that moves the internal aggregates is exhausted, and (621) the body abides without shaking. The wind that moves secret discursive thoughts is exhausted, and it is impossible for discursive thoughts to flow. At this time, two things will occur: measuring with dreams, and signs appearing on the three doors of body, speech, and mind. For the superior practitioner, dreams dissolve into the Dharmadhatu and cease. For the intermediate practitioner, dreams appear as clear light. For the inferior practitioner, one knows that dreams are dreams. Signs appearing on the three doors: each of the four appearances has three, totaling twelve. First, the three signs of the manifestation of Dharmata are: the body is like a turtle placed in a container, without action or movement. Speech is like a mute, unwilling to speak. The mind is like a dakini seizing old things, seemingly scattered, but actually having determined its target. Second, the three signs of the increase of experience are: the body is like a sick person, without grooming or adornment (622). Speech is like a madman, speaking meaningless nonsense. The mind is like a person poisoned, determined not to return to samsara. Third, the three signs of the perfection of awareness are: the body is like an elephant emerging from the mud in an instant, moving without obstruction through the five elements. Speech is like a child in a pottery jar, whatever is said benefits others and makes them believe. The mind is like a person cured of measles, no longer returning to the three realms, having gained confidence. Fourth, the three signs of the exhaustion of Dharmata are: the body is like a corpse in a charnel ground, even surrounded by many executioners, without fear or shame.
