From the key of meaning, firstly, the key to the manifesting door is: The Compendium Sutra says, "The door is to look at the three bodies with the eyes." How to look? The sutra says, "The key to the door is to look in reverse, downwards, and obliquely." That is to say, the wisdom of awareness is in the center of the heart, like the light of a lamp in a vase, the vein connecting from the heart to the eye is like a white thread, and from there it manifests in the eye door through the path of the light vein, so the way of looking at the Dharmakaya is to look upwards at the shape of the crown; the way of looking at the Sambhogakaya is to look obliquely to the left and right, like straightening a bamboo pole; the way of looking at the Nirmanakaya is to half-close the eyes, look slightly downwards, like a sage practicing meditation. It is also as the sutra says, "The eyes half-closed look at the sun, as clear as white cloth in the east." Therefore, looking outwards at the sky, setting up the senses like a spear (600) to look, one can see the outer space. Looking at the sun with the corners of the eyes to the left and right or with half-closed eyes, one can see the inner clear space of awareness. In this way, the senses are guided to the middle space, and the illusionary pure land manifests. Therefore, practicing looking with any of the three ways of looking, no matter how long the eyes are focused, they can remain stable. Secondly, the basis of manifestation, the key to the place is: In the clear and cloudless sky, look west in the morning and east in the evening. Or, in order to easily manifest luminosity, combine the two, look east in the morning and west in the evening. And, look at the empty sky about an arrow's length below the sun. It is also as the Compendium Sutra says, "The place is where there is no obscuration." The Subsequent Sutra says, "The key to the place is the cloudless sky." The Longchen Nyingtik (601) says, "Away from the three conditions, it will manifest clearly." Therefore, the place away from conditions is the empty sky, the senses away from conditions are the lamp in the water, and the place away from conditions is the quiet place in the clear and high place. Thirdly, the key to the wind is: The Subsequent Sutra says, "The key to the wind is to practice very slowly." Therefore, if one does not rely on the slow wind, the wind will scatter the awareness and it will not be possible to grasp it. Therefore, do not exhale from the nostrils, separate the lips and teeth slightly, breathe slowly in and out from the mouth, keep it balanced, and exhale slightly outwards. The inner and outer winds are slow and balanced, and exhaling slightly outwards will stop the movement of the wind.

Thus it is said, when the movement of the winds ceases, the activity of discursive thoughts ceases, and one abides in the unmoving expanse of awareness. Fourth, the key point of awareness is: In "Vast Expanse of Clarity," it says, "The key point of awareness, like a thread, (602) is imprisoned. It relies on the slowness of actual appearances." And in "After Transcendence," it says, "The thread of awareness is imprisoned." As it is said, the outer expanse of space, empty like a mirror, opens the door to appearances. The inner expanse of pure awareness is like the face of the lamp holder. Initially, from the space between the eyebrows, a vast expanse of dark blue light gradually spreads out, like a rainbow in the sky, within the five-colored halo of subtle light rays, a clear, empty sphere of light appears, like ripples from a stone thrown into a pond, flickering and shimmering, eventually manifesting as a clear, round, red sphere. From the burning lamp, from the unchanging dark blue appearance, even five-colored lights appear. As it is said, this becomes extremely clear. Within it, awareness, the vajra thread, like the mind of the master, becomes even more manifest. (603) It is also like a knot tied in a horse's tail, or like a golden thread, or a string of pearls, or a bouquet of flowers. Initially, it appears like a mirage, flickering, unclear, and trembling. Therefore, guiding it with the gaze, placing it in the expanse of space, focusing intently, without being disturbed by discursive thoughts such as judgments of right and wrong, the awareness of the viewer, merely knowing the nature of awareness itself, remains unmoving. If the light of luminosity is unclear, or wavers to the left, right, above, or below, do not follow it by moving the eyes and mind, but guide it slowly from the corner of the eye with the gaze, and when it appears as before, focus intently without wavering the mind. Without making artificial alterations, viewing the self-nature of the expanse of awareness, the outer appearances do not cease, and the inner clinging is not disturbed. (604) Abiding in the inexpressible, free from elaboration, the self-nature, the object and the subject merge without separation, and the light of luminosity separates from the space between the eyebrows, appearing without dimming or brightening, and so on, the experiences of the four appearances and perceptions gradually arise. Therefore, temporarily, the wisdom of awareness becomes manifest, and thus one is separated from ignorance.
