One, that is the basis for meditating on impermanence. By meditating on impermanence, one understands the faults of samsara (525), and by understanding that, one becomes skilled in adopting and abandoning cause and effect. From these causes, genuine refuge and bodhicitta will arise. Therefore, if beginners are guided in this way, the order of the path will be clear, consistent with the general guidance of the Mahayana, and will not deviate from the fundamental intention, so it will be good. If you do so, you can learn from other instructions in the guidance manual or from a separate explanation of the general preliminary Dharma. Second, there are six ways to meditate on the specific order of objects. First, the preliminary of the session: In a secluded place, sit comfortably on a cushion, straighten your body, and relax your mind. The key to speech is to exhale three times, thinking that all diseases, evil spirits, and sins are purified. The key to the mind is to think that for the benefit of all sentient beings, I will practice the profound path, (526) universally visualize the Lama, and with boundless devotion, pray to the kind root Lama, the embodiment of all Buddhas of the three times. Please bless my mind-stream. Thus, pray wholeheartedly for what you desire. This is the beginning of all sessions, and even if it is not included in the text, it is the practice of the Lamas. Second, the method of meditating on impermanence: For us ordinary people, from beginningless time until now, we have experienced samsara in general and especially the immeasurable suffering of the three lower realms. However, it is still difficult to fully understand the end of suffering. Therefore, now that we have obtained the human body with eighteen qualities of leisure and endowment, which is extremely rare and meaningful, we must achieve the ultimate goal. Do not always think of doing it tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, and delay with procrastination. Even if you get a human body, it is impermanent and quickly decays. (527) There is no doubt that death is inevitable, and this is obvious. There is no certainty when death will come, and death will come suddenly. There are many causes of death, and there is no one who will not be killed by diseases and evil spirits. The only thing that is beneficial to death is the sacred Dharma, and nothing else. Therefore, the houses that have been built with hard work, the accumulated

possessions. Cherished relatives and friends, none of them will remain; only karma will follow oneself. Therefore, the external changes of months and seasons—summer, winter, autumn, spring, years, months, stars, and even moments and instants—are constantly changing. Similarly, one's own death is approaching, and death is certain. The internal changes of beings are also such that enemies, relatives, and intermediate beings are inconceivable. Just seeing and hearing of so much death makes it clear that one's own death is uncertain. Secretly, one should remember all the changes in one's body from birth to the present, one's thoughts, actions (528), and all behaviors, which are constantly changing from moment to moment. As it is said in the Extensive Play Sutra: "The three realms are impermanent, like autumn clouds. This body, which is taken up, is fearful and separates. The four seasons are impermanent, changing and without essence. Aging, decaying, and subject to death, they do not remain for a moment, an instant, or a second. The life of beings passes like water falling from a steep cliff." Thinking in this way, one does not know which will come first, tomorrow's affairs or the next life. Therefore, now, while one has autonomy, one must strive to practice Dharma without delay. As Nagarjuna said: "If a fire suddenly breaks out on your head or clothes, even giving up other tasks to stop it, you should strive to ensure that there is no rebirth, for there is nothing more important than that." As it is said, knowing that all the perfections of this life are like the happiness of a dream in a single sleep (529), one should turn away from them and make death a priority from today. If one does not take rebirth after death, it will be the end. If one must take rebirth, it will not go beyond the two, the bad and the good destinies. If one is born in a bad destiny, then the three bad realms are unbearable suffering, intense and prolonged. Even if one is born in a good destiny, one is constantly tormented by the suffering of suffering, the suffering of change, and the suffering of conditioning. Therefore, no matter where one is born in the high or low places of samsara, one will not go beyond the nature of suffering. As it is said in the Mindfulness Sutra: "Sentient beings in hell are harmed by the fires of hell. Hungry ghosts are harmed by hunger and thirst. Animals are harmed by eating each other. Humans are harmed by making a living. Asuras fight and
