Regarding the arrangement: It is for the sake of understanding the subject matter, purpose, and how they are related. In Maitreya's Ornament for Clear Realization, Vasubandhu says: 'The connection is expressed through language, although it is not actually existent, it can be obtained from meaning through distinction.' Third, regarding the manner of purpose, etc., there are two ways: the three dharmas of purpose, etc., are explicitly stated in the beginning of the treatise in words, and for those that are not explicitly stated, they are explained through inference of meaning. The first case is seen in some great treatises. For example, in the Ornament for Clear Realization, the path of all aspects of knowledge (sarvākārajñatā) is the subject matter, easily understanding it is the purpose, and the wise Bodhisattva being able to see it is the ultimate purpose, all of which are explicitly stated. As the treatise says: 'By explaining the path of all aspects of knowledge, and what is said from this, others cannot experience, through the nature of the ten offerings, focusing on memory, the wise can see, therefore, easily understanding is the purpose of starting the action.' Just as it is explicitly existent, others should also be understood. The second case is that for the three dharmas of purpose, etc., which are not explicitly stated at the beginning of the root treatise, in order to eliminate the four doubts mentioned earlier, they are supplemented and explained in the connection of the treatise through inference of meaning. This is very common. Fourth, regarding the manner of explanation, the purpose is: by first listing the purpose and connection, just as a merchant sees the profit of trade and invests in it, wise people can correctly understand the subject matter, etc., and thus generate respect for this treatise and invest in it, etc., which is the purpose. Vasubandhu says: 'After hearing the great meaning of the sutra, the listener and the holder will generate respect, therefore the purpose should be stated first.' An emanation of Manjushri says: 'In order to show the excellence of the treatise, the teacher first states the purpose, by fully understanding and seeing it, why not invest in research?' In summary: It is necessary to understand based on the categories of the subject matter, the way the purpose is achieved, etc., and the manner of explaining the words and meanings is the same as before. How other explanations are included here, and the elimination of doubts about them: Second, the way other explanations are included is: In Danda's poetics, auspicious words, reverence, and indicating through non-existent things, these three are the doors of manifestation of the treatise.

Furthermore, 'Praise, homage, and subject matter are the means of definitely indicating the entrance.' If one thinks that these are other preliminaries and not necessarily included in the previous five, that is not correct. Because praise and homage are categories of offering praise, and the indication of the subject matter (i.e., the Dharma) is the structure of the text itself, therefore they are all included in the previous five. Moreover, Shantideva says at the beginning of the Compendium of Trainings: 'Hearing this Dharma can liberate you from the precipice of hells, etc., and the endless suffering of burning, etc., because your untamed mind will repeatedly experience these. Therefore, in order to hear this Dharma, rely on it with extremely vast reverence.' etc., first urging to listen, and then afterwards explaining offering praise, etc., if one thinks that this is not like a preliminary, that is also not correct. Because this is a word of urging with a promise, so it is included in it. Similarly, after carefully examining the preliminaries of various treatises, one should understand how they are included in these five. Third, questioning and analyzing these preliminaries: Are the preliminaries explained in this way required to be fully present at the beginning of each treatise? If so, then they are mostly not seen; if not, then saying that all five are preliminaries becomes meaningless. If one thinks like this, that is not correct. Because it is not said that each treatise needs to fully possess all five preliminaries, so any one of the five, or two, three, etc., whichever is present, is the preliminary, therefore there is no later fault. Regarding the examples of each one: Only offering praise and no others, such as Nagarjuna saying in the Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning: 'To that one who has abandoned this way of arising and ceasing, who teaches dependent origination, to that Sage I pay homage.' After that, he directly explains the main text of the treatise. This can be seen in many of Nagarjuna's collections of Madhyamaka praises. Only stating the commitment and no others, such as Shantarakshita saying: 'Possessing detachment and well-spoken, wonderful and certain of its meaning, the noble ones should listen with one mind, I will explain the contemplation, please listen.' After that, he directly explains the main text of the contemplation. Only expressing humility and no others, such as Atisha's advice to Lha-tsun Jangchub Ö (lha btsun byang chub 'od, Royal Prince Bodhichitta): first expressing humility with the verses mentioned earlier, and then directly explaining the main text of the advice. Only the structure of the text and no others, such as the Uttaratantra and Madhyantavibhaga cited above, after the structure of the text, directly entering the main text. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
