Regarding the works of 'Yourself' (referring to the Guru or Buddha), including 'Abhidharma - Immaculate Wisdom Following,' etc., what is needed to obtain these works, and which treatises should be studied? What is needed to correctly understand these contents? Because this treatise is the root of these contents, it is called 'Abhidharma-kośa.' It is like this. The second situation is that most works do not directly state the meaning of the title at the beginning, so it is necessary to supplement the explanation of the meaning of the title. An example of the second situation is when Nāgārjuna explained the title of 'Letter to a Friend': 'This letter is to be sent to a close friend, the happy king Devasukha, so it is called 'Letter to a Friend.' As it says in 'Letter to a Friend': 'Beings are obscured by ignorance. Knowing this, with compassion, benefit them. The venerable Nāgārjuna entrusted this letter to King Devasukha.' Similarly, Śrīdhara explained the title of 'Pearl Garland': 'The treasure where the Dragon King dwells is the center of the vast ocean. From the sky of various poems, like the sky's fish tail, it arises. The wise Amrita strung it with silk threads, creating a pearl garland. Please keep this treasured in your heart.' Explaining the title of 'Well-Spoken Treasure': 'Observing with wisdom, it does not contradict the Dharma, and it can also perfectly accomplish worldly affairs. What is the behavior of the holy ones like? This explanation is the Well-Spoken Treasure.' These examples can help understand the meaning of the titles of other works. Third, regarding the method of explaining the title, the necessity is that by explaining the meaning of the title, one can understand oneself to become wise and make others interested. In particular, relying on the title to understand the content can eliminate all ignorance. As it says in the 'Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra': 'If names are not given, all the world will fall into ignorance. Therefore, in order to eliminate ignorance, the Protector (Buddha) gave names.' In short, who created the title and from where? How was it named, and so on? The method of explaining the meaning of the words should be known as before. Humility and Explanation of Necessity The third part is humility, including humility itself, the types of humility, and the method of explaining humility. First is humility itself: Even if the author is in a position to measure standards, but considering the necessity, he still thinks that he is dull, has little knowledge, and is incapable in front of others, and so on, to express his shortcomings. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lamp Bearer), to those companions who are highly intelligent and have very clear minds, said: 'I, who am so incapable and of such low intelligence, should not be asking you for advice. However, because you are my cherished and esteemed friends, I implore you to instill these words into the heart of my childish and ignorant companion.' It is like that. Second, explaining the ways of humility: One must understand based on what one is being humble, and how to be humble. That is to say, what is to be expressed has never occurred before, and the expression and rhetoric are special, being a dharma that pleases the wise. Because my work does not possess these two qualities, it is difficult to please others. Therefore, for the sake of others, I have not created this work.' This is an example of being humble based on what is expressed and the way it is expressed. As Śāntideva said: 'What has never occurred before is not expressed here; I do not possess exquisite rhetoric either. Therefore, for the sake of others, I have not created this book.' The differentiation of the extremely profound nature of samsara is the nirvāṇa of the three vehicles. Furthermore, praising the content to be explained through similes: As the fifth of the Bhadrakalpa Buddhas said: 'Like gold being hammered, like lotuses blooming; like relieving hunger, tasting delicious food; like hearing good news, opening a treasure door. Explaining the Dharma here brings supreme joy.' Briefly summarizing the names of the individual topics of the work: As it says: 'Buddha, Dharma, perfection, realm, bodhi, qualities, and Buddha's activities—these are the essence of all treatises, briefly, these are the seven vajra places.' There is no certainty regarding the words, chapters, etc., of the work, but rather a collection of whatever is known. As the noble Asaṅga said: 'The proximate taking of "to" and "why", the aspects of "nature", and the "order, meaning, and classification of metaphors", as well as the four ways of "briefness", etc.' Like this, others should also be understood. Third, regarding the three ways of explaining, the necessity is: First, explaining the structure of the body, there are three necessities for the explainer to explain easily, three necessities for the listener to understand easily, and three necessities for the treatise to generate certainty. First, the first three necessities: Knowing the structure of the body allows one to recognize the content that will appear below, the order will not be confused, and since the beginning has been mentioned, the meaning will be understood effortlessly. The middle three necessities are: At the time of hearing, the content to be expressed is easily recognized, at the time of thinking, it is effortlessly remembered, and at the time of practice, enlightenment is quickly attained. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
