Oh, Khenpo Paden Dhondup's Teachings NPD6: A Detailed Explanation of the Preliminary Practices for the Treatise 'The Ornament that Beautifies the Precious Tree of Tantric Realization' - 'Joy for the Wise'. A Detailed Explanation of the Preliminary Practices for the Treatise 'The Ornament that Beautifies the Precious Tree of Tantric Realization' - 'Joy for the Wise'. General Meaning of the Preliminary Practices for Entering the Treatise: Explanation of Homage. A Detailed Explanation of the Preliminary Practices for the Treatise 'The Ornament that Beautifies the Precious Tree of Tantric Realization' - 'Joy for the Wise'. May there be well-being!) Perfectly complete the two pure accumulations, be the protector of sentient beings, Adorn the pure lands, free from dust, the guide is inseparable from Samantabhadra. With reverence, I prostrate to the lotus feet of the venerable Guru, widely spreading the source of abundant perfections, The supreme ornament that beautifies the precious tree, the explanation of the preliminary practices benefits the teachings, A gathering of wise ones brings joy, eloquent speech is like a grand feast. Here, the explanation of the fourfold principle, 'The Ornament that Beautifies the Precious Tree of Tantric Realization,' will be given, containing three points: the preliminary practices for entering the treatise, the nature of the treatise to be entered, and the activity of entering the treatise to its completion. First, the general meaning, divided into three parts: explaining the five well-known preliminary practices, how other explanations are included here, and resolving doubts about these practices. The first part includes: homage, vow, humility, classification, and explanation of necessity and connection, a total of five points. First is homage, divided into the reason why homage is needed at the beginning of a composition, and how to explain the nature of homage itself. The first point is: before composing a treatise, one must pay homage, such as prostrations, by clearly showing the qualities of one's own Guru, teacher, or chosen deity. As the noble Asanga said: 'Those who wish to compose a treatise should pay homage to two: out of respect for the Dharma, to the teacher who composed the treatise; and out of respect for the meaning, to the teacher who explains it.' The second point is divided into: determining the nature, and showing its categories through examples. The first point is: according to the qualities of the object of homage, such as the Guru, stating them in detail or briefly as appropriate, and then paying homage with an attitude of reverence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, there are actual words of offering, such as 'Homage,' and by taking merit as the object, praying 'May this please you, may there be auspiciousness,' etc. All these are the essence of offering and praise. Although these words are different, they are not contradictory in meaning, because they all express praise for the qualities of the object of offering. As the emanation of Manjushri said: 'The essence of gathering offerings and praises, auspicious words, etc., are not contradictory, because everything points to, and shows the greatness of the teacher.' Secondly, illustrating the types of 'Do' (མཆོད་བརྗོད།,mchod brjod, offering and praise) through examples: The types of offering and praise need to be distinguished by the endings of the verses. Among them, those ending with offering, such as what was said by the scholar Hero: 'The glorious one possessed of perfect qualities, completely held by auspiciousness, becoming the basis of fame, flawless and extremely pleasing, the past deeds of the Buddha, all the excellent qualities, I offer with a handful of poetic flowers.' Those ending with praise, such as what was said by the sound theorist: 'Your body is without fault, from the faultless comes forth melodious speech, possessing immeasurable wisdom, gone beyond, I prostrate and praise the non-conceptual.' Those ending with reverence, such as what was said by Nagarjuna: 'To those who have not fully understood, wandering in all realms of existence, and to the Dharmadhatu residing in the minds of sentient beings, I prostrate and pay homage.' There are also many types of auspicious words, those ending with victory, such as what was said by Jetari: 'The lord of the three realms, ruling beings with Dharma, the guru of goddesses, the father of noble beings, subduing opponents, bringing joy with his retinue, the sole king of Dharma, may you be victorious!' Those ending with joy, such as what was said by Manjushri Kirti: 'With the vajra of guidance, turning the rocks ruined by fear, leading them into the terrifying ocean, Tara, may you be pleased!' Those ending with wishing for auspiciousness, such as what was said by Virtue Power: 'May the all-knowing one grant you unwavering auspiciousness!' Those ending with peace, such as what was said by Bhikshu Chandra: 'The buzzing of bees, the unfolding of petals, the blossoming of stamens, filled with pollen, the vast honey dripping, offering flowers with folded hands, with this offering to my teacher, may you be at peace!' Those ending with protection, such as what was said by Shri Gawa Lha: 'Born from the guise of joy and displeasure...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
