Furthermore, I pray for the removal of the cause of suffering, which is sin; I pray for you to look upon the result of suffering; I pray for you to be taken care of through the remembrance of merit; and I pray through the example of benefiting others without expecting anything in return. There are four ways of praying. The first is to pray for the removal of the cause of suffering, which is sin: As it is taught in the scriptures: 'It is difficult to gain freedom of mind from the flood of karma, therefore one is subject to sin. I pray that the protector of the world will look upon the best way to wash away sins. I prostrate with folded hands and pay homage to you, and with fear in my heart, I confess all these sins again and again. I pray that the protector and his retinue will uproot the seeds of all beings' sins.' The second is to pray for looking upon the result of suffering, which is divided into two: praying for looking upon all beings and praying for looking upon individual beings. First, praying for looking upon all beings: As it is taught in the scriptures: 'Compassionate protector, please look upon us for a moment! Beings lack the eye of wisdom, are deceived by false loving friends, wander on the path of suffering, and are oppressed by the heavy burden of suffering. Because they are surrounded by enemies on all sides, their mouths are dry and their eyes are weak, and they utter various kinds of miserable cries. They are helpless and have no refuge. Please look upon this world! You said at the beginning: 'I will become the protector of the helpless.' Compassionate one with a firm vow, we helpless ones ask you to protect us! The power of karma is difficult to reverse, and the river of suffering is extremely frightening. We pray that the protector will save us!' Second, praying for looking upon individual beings, which is divided into three: praying for looking upon human beings, praying for looking upon beings in the lower realms, and praying for looking upon gods and demigods. First, praying for looking upon human beings: As it is taught in the scriptures: 'I still have a request, please look upon us with steadfast diligence! Magadha (one of the sixteen ancient Indian kingdoms), Kosala (one of the sixteen ancient Indian kingdoms), Devapala (king of the Indian Pala dynasty), and Vaishali (an ancient Indian city), as well as other small kingdoms and Cakravāla (the iron mountains in the Buddhist cosmology), Kapilavastu (the birthplace of Shakyamuni), etc. I pray that you will temporarily look upon the monasteries in these places, the diligent practitioners who uphold the Vinaya, your Buddhist teachings, and the happiness and suffering of beings! The land of Nili, as well as Hor and Hor Chenpo (Mongolia), and the regions close to Hwala Shan (Khotan), China and great China, Gandhara (ancient Indian region) and desirable forms, Zangling and the Golden Continent, Moon Continent and Lion Continent, and Bangga Bharantra, etc., regions located in the south and west, formerly the foundation of your teachings. The snowy northern region, which the Thubpa (Buddha) called Tibet and great Tibet, in this well-known land, after my Nirvana, in two thousand five hundred years, the sacred Dharma will flourish. There, for those who hold the sacred Dharma, reciting and chanting, listening, speaking, and practicing, it is as if my eyes are watching. You, the savior of beings, have prophesied this. However, now these beings have shallow merit, and the times have become very bad. With the false image of Buddhism, defiling your teachings, by this power, beings are experiencing extremely unbearable suffering. Like wild animals chased by hunters, their eyes tremble with fear, their steps falter with dread, their bellies are extremely contracted with hunger, their bodies are tormented by cold winds, some are struck down by illness, some have lost their relatives and friends, some have their paths blocked, some are mentally confused, and for those whose merit is exhausted, demons also hate them. Because of the evil deeds committed in the past, we are enduring the evil consequences, we beseech the Buddha and his retinue to look upon us. You praised the human world as heaven, yet, this heaven-like suffering, we pray that the Protector quickly saves us. No matter who we seek refuge in, we see that those protectors deceive. The non-deceptive supreme protector, we seek refuge in you, the supreme refuge. The above scripture reveals this. Next is the prayer to look upon the beings in the lower realms: For the beings in the hell realms, please compassionately cast a brief glance. The reviving hell and the black rope hell, as well as the combined hell and the howling hell, etc., and the extremely unbearable Avici hell, being burned by flames, raining down weapons, only able to utter faint groans, unable to even utter cries of pain, please look upon those hot hells. The blister hells and other cold hells, bodies frozen and cracked, unable to move, how do such hell beings live? Protector, please look upon the hungry ghosts who suffer for a long time from hunger and thirst, they crave food and drink, uttering miserable wails, what should be done for them? Please instruct.
