The foolish do not contemplate, they only care about food and drink. There is no difference between such fools and animals. No matter how evil a person is, their nature will not become good. The nature of fire is heat, and it will never change. Do not imitate evil people just because others do so. How could a lion eat vomit like dogs and pigs? Even if very poor, the wise can illuminate others with the light of good speech. Even without a string, a good bow can be an ornament of the earth and sky. Fools like food and wealth, the wise like to hear good words, the wicked like others to suffer misfortune, and the virtuous like others to be happy and peaceful. Fools argue over meaningless words, the wise accomplish great things in a gentle way, the wicked entice others to fight, and the virtuous use wealth to resolve disputes. The army of fools is silent, eloquent speech is the army of the virtuous, the army of the wicked is false words, and skill in strategy is the army of the wise. Fools live by hard labor, the wicked live by sin, the virtuous rely on the merits of previous lives, and the wise live by wisdom and knowledge. Fools strive for meaningless things, the wicked strive for improper things, and the virtuous and wise strive for happiness in this life and the next. Fools destroy themselves, the wicked entice others to destruction, and the virtuous and wise enable themselves and others to attain happiness. When fools encounter misfortune, they complain about relatives and friends. When the wicked encounter misfortune, they resent others. When the virtuous encounter misfortune, they diligently practice the Dharma. When the wise encounter misfortune, they seek knowledge. When fools get angry, they beat women. When the wicked get angry, their evil thoughts increase. When the virtuous get angry, they reflect on shame. When the wise get angry, they speak the truth. The words of fools are all words of greed, theft and robbery are the words of the wicked, the words of the virtuous are all virtuous deeds, and the wise discuss beneficial teachings. Fools are skilled in base deeds, the wicked are skilled in deception and trickery, the virtuous are skilled in good scriptures, and the wise are proficient in all knowledge. Fools are like corpses, the wicked are like poisonous snakes, the virtuous are like nectar-filled vases, and the wise are like eyes. Those with little talent are arrogant and conceited, those with little wisdom are easily satisfied, those with few desires are revered by gods and humans, and reducing worldly affairs increases yogic practice. The fruit of wealth is giving and enjoying, the fruit of hearing is knowing what to accept and reject, the fruit of thinking is taming the senses, and the fruit of meditation is the cessation of afflictions. Even if fools are praised and their status is elevated, they will naturally fall to a lowly position. It is like an arrow shot into the sky with great effort. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ah! The earth falls without effort. If the wicked are praised for their status, they hate the praiser even more. If earth and dust are thrown into the sky, it falls on the head of the thrower himself. If saints and scholars are praised for their status, it is the cause of happiness. By the grace of praising the Dharma King, all places become happy. The fifth chapter, which explains miscellaneous topics, from 'The Mirror of Discernment: A Treatise on Conduct,' is completed. Chapter Six: Knowing the World A person with intelligence and good understanding, by relying on elders and hearing the treatises on conduct, will come to know noble behavior. Above is the lord, below are the subjects, direct relatives are perfectly complete, and having a supreme object of veneration—such a person is noble in this world. To parents, Khenpos (亲教师), Acharyas (轨范师), monks, and all elders, giving appropriate service and respect—such a person is praised by all in this world. Not pursuing one's own desires, but doing what benefits one's retinue, and being a protector of those who suffer—such a person is worthy of respect by all. A hired person who is faithful, knows shame, is stable, humble, and without deceit, and speaks truthfully—will be praised by all the holy ones. One who gives charity impartially without expecting anything in return, and abandons even small sins—will be renowned in all directions. One who learns virtues well, does great benefit to others, and has generosity and pure conduct—wherever he goes, he will become a leader. If one only cares about eating and drinking oneself, and does not gather servants with generosity, like swans in a dried-up lake, no one will gather around. One who strives to help with Dharma, counsel, and material things—like swans in a lotus lake, all who are far away will gather. If you want to make enemies unhappy, you should make yourself virtuous. Otherwise, enemies will rejoice in your downfall, and an angry person burns his own mind. Those with great wisdom and skill in methods can even turn enemies into friends. The depths of their wisdom cannot be fathomed by anyone. Cunning people and enemies, even if they speak sweetly, cannot be trusted. Haven't you heard the story of the hunter singing sweet songs and shooting wild animals? Being cautious of enemies is not cowardice, and jumping off a cliff is not bravery. A lion is brave even if it jumps into fire, and a fox is cowardly even if it jumps off a cliff. If you rely on the army of the wicked, you will naturally abandon your good nature. Even the Ganges, when it enters the ocean, naturally becomes saltwater.
