Accomplishing through virtuous deeds is what the noble ones always do, Having all the qualities of the noble ones in their hearts, even if not fully heard, Being too poor and having poor attire will be despised by all. Being too stingy in accumulating is also not what the noble ones should do, Like the honey accumulated by bees, don't you know it will be enjoyed by others? Even a little accumulated wealth should not be wasted, Like sandalwood burned into charcoal, it is not beneficial to oneself or others. The conduct of the noble ones is like a garland of blooming flowers, Worn on the head by all, and like frolicking in the forest. In 'The Mirror of Discernment: A Treatise on Law,' the chapter on explaining the nature of the noble ones, Chapter Three ends. In 'The Mirror of Discernment: A Treatise on Law,' the chapter on explaining the nature of the wise, Chapter Four: What the wise ones follow is not being confused about all knowledge, Being able to choose what should be entered and what should be avoided, this is the wise one. No matter what is done, because of having scripture, reason, and key instructions, Without frustration and fear, this is the code of conduct for the wise ones. Through learning to master memory and application, with the light of writing, explaining, and debating, Making the Dharma manifest, this is the action of the wise ones. Not being deceived by others, accomplishing great things with little effort, Not accepting the control of others, this is the merit of the wise ones. With the wisdom to discern good and bad, and with mindfulness, awareness, and caution, Whatever the wise ones do, they can do it without fault, with perfect merit. The actions of the noble ones, and the teachings of the Sutras, Vinaya, and Shastras, Through metaphors and various arguments, the wise ones are happy to proclaim the wonderful Dharma. Like bees clinging to flowers, the merits of the wise can only be understood by the wise. Like swans gathering in a lake full of water, the wise are always surrounded by the wise. Fools only see faults, while the wise see all merits, Even when they are very old, the wise are still seeking knowledge. Like rivers flowing into the sea, prostitutes craving men, Fools can never be satisfied with wealth, just as the wise are never satisfied with knowledge. Disregarding body, life, and wealth, seeking the true Dharma, This is the characteristic of the wise, which is difficult for fools to do. For the very poor wise, the wise will feel admiration, For the wealthy fool, they will not envy even for a moment. Most of the rain falls on the mountains, most practitioners are for this life, Most of the wealth gathers in the hands of fools. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Generally, scholars are content with poverty. A scholar with virtues is not necessarily liked by everyone. Most people like to live, but some die from slander. However, most people like those with virtues. When the sun rises, everyone who cannot see the west is happy. A virtuous person is not necessarily beneficial to everyone. Even the light of the full moon may not suit all lotus ponds. A wise person, without accepting others' commissions, for unnecessary and unhelpful matters, and for the deaf, mute, and foolish, maintains humility and purifies their own mind. If something is needed, appropriate, and beneficial, even without being commissioned, one should, with a fearless mind, offer helpful assistance and advice to others. Even if others do not listen to me or even slander me, a wise person will not be angry. Because sentient beings have diverse preferences, even the Buddha is slandered. If others praise me, a wise person will not become arrogant. Because there will always be others who slander me, and praise may be false. A wise person can see and hear other wise people, and a wise person enjoys the words of other wise people. A wise person can eliminate their own and others' faults, and a wise person is skilled at accumulating merit. Even if hundreds and thousands of fools describe something in detail, they cannot understand it, but a wise person can understand it in an instant. Similarly, all the knowledge that a fool cannot understand even after studying diligently for a hundred years, a wise person can fully comprehend in a moment. A wise person's virtue is their wealth, and a wise person's friend is also a wise person. A wise person can also experience great joy, and a wise person can guide others to become wise. By relying on wise people, listening extensively, and properly contemplating, one can generate wisdom and become wise. The fourth chapter, 'The Nature of the Wise,' from 'The Mirror of Discernment: A Treatise on Conduct,' is complete. Chapter Five: Combined Teachings A wise enemy is better than a very foolish friend. A fool who wants to help will hit his own head, while a wise enemy will provide more protection. One evil person, with cruelty, subjects many places to destruction. A fire spreading to one tree can burn down an entire forest. The kindness of one noble person brings happiness to all places. The light of one sun ripens all crops. One wise person, with wisdom, can defeat all evil adversaries. The roar of one lion frightens all the wild animals.
