Chapter on the Foolish 2. To abandon the root is foolish, In the eyes of fools, the virtues of the wise, Are but a slight joy in eating and drinking, Like a golden bowl to a dog, inferior to dung. Though there are two, fools and the wise, There is no difference to fools, A priceless jewel to a cowherd, Is like a stone. The virtues of the wise before fools, Repeatedly explained, they still do not understand, The clear and beautiful rainbow in the sky, How can a blind person see it? One who is not wise, The virtues of the wise he will never attain, One who is not a bee, From a flower, honey is impossible to obtain. The holy one revered by the wise, Is despised by fools, The image of the Victorious One, worshipped by the wise, If it encounters a dog, it is discarded as impure. Not knowing the order of superiors and inferiors, And being devoid of knowledge of the scriptures, In a city where fools gather, The wise cannot dwell, The minds of fools are small, They do not know the good that comes later, Whatever comes to mind, they do it, Regret never ceases afterward. With a fickle and unstable mind, And a cowardly fool, He undertakes hundreds of different tasks, But in the end, not a single task is completed. Not knowing the coming and going of thoughts, The foolish fool is small-minded, Burning himself with his own evil nature, And burning others with his radiating light. Although entering the gate of the Buddha's teachings, Not turning his mind to the Dharma, In the midst of fools, that fool, Proclaims various tales of mockery. Not having the mind to practice good and bad, And not having heard the Dharma, In the midst of the wise, that fool, Is like a mute to the words of the Dharma. Like a monkey warming itself in the sun, Like a bad friend of a weaver, A fool as an official or a servant, Whatever he does will be ruined. From the mirror of the scriptures of customs, which clearly shows what to take and what to leave, this is the second chapter, which shows the nature of fools. Chapter on the Nature of the Holy The holy ones attend to the holy ones, They are never satisfied with listening to the Dharma, The good deeds of the holy ones, Are always regarded as holy by the holy ones. Abandoning the ten non-virtuous deeds, Being generous and abiding by the precepts, Being loving and delighting in the welfare of others, These are the actions of the holy ones. Properly honoring those who are worthy of honor, Always being kind to those who are without protectors, Not forgetting the kindness done, These are the actions of the holy ones. To the knowledge that should be learned, Joyfully learning without losing the desire to learn, Always fulfilling what has been promised --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not being flattering is steadfastness, it is the nature of the holy. What one dislikes, do not impose on others. Repaying evil with good is a noble sign of the holy. Treating everyone equally, without discrimination, being steadfast and diligent, with patience. Wise people have broad minds, and the holy have strength and integrity in their hearts. Being content, speaking truthfully, and using the essence of wealth to accumulate merit. Considering the future in the long term, this is the nature of the holy. Whether facing happiness or suffering, praise or slander, they are neither proud nor depressed. Benefiting oneself and others is the nature of the holy. Learning all knowledge, increasing wisdom, without arrogance, and subduing the senses. Taking practice as the core is the action of virtuous people. Being close to and consulting with the wise, enduring the insults of the lowly and being kind to them. Giving victory to others is the conduct of the holy. Even in poverty or facing death, the holy will never abandon noble actions. Repaying evil with evil, not repaying good with good, praising oneself and slandering others, these the holy will never do. A life that abandons shame, enjoyment associated with sin, power gained by betraying friendship, the holy would rather choose death. Relying on bad friends, speaking evil words to others, indulging in gambling and alcohol, the holy avoid them like poison. Speaking with loving honesty, not harming oneself and others, making everyone happy and benefiting everyone, this is what the holy strive to do. Secrets shared with the heart, the holy do not tell others, if that person gets angry because of it, it is because the secret was revealed. The holy carefully examine and correct their own shortcomings, and even do good to enemies, only doing what should be done. The holy respectfully accept beneficial words, even if they sound harsh. Even if the words are pleasant but not beneficial, they will not be kept in mind. Being too soft will be despised by everyone, being too tough is not the action of the holy. Be soft when it is appropriate to be soft, and be tough when it is appropriate to be tough, if one can understand this well, one can benefit everyone. Being too upright easily leads to failure, cunning is not the action of the holy. If one knows what is beneficial to what, one can benefit oneself and others. Speaking too much easily leads to mistakes, speaking too little seems foolish. Speaking appropriately when needed, one can be free from all faults. Respect those who are worthy of respect, take care of those who are of low status, act without hypocrisy, and be honest in doing things. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
