Some are supplemented by reason.’ The Bodhisattva Śāntarakṣita, who has crossed the ocean of his own and others' tenets, nourished his supreme body with the nectar of non-extreme Madhyamaka Prajñāpāramitā, and bore the great burden of the teachings and all sentient beings on his shoulders of compassion. He composed this great treatise on the arrangement of rituals based on the sutra that elaborates on the special aspirations of the seven Tathāgatas in the past. First, to explain the basis of the ritual, for those who wish to perform the ritual, it is said to ‘wash the body well,’ and so on. Then, there are four aspects of blessing the place, etc., then the invitation, then the contemplation of dwelling, then the performance of the seven branches based on the four objects of offering. Then, the essence of the Buddha Jewel is the eight Sugatas, the essence of the Dharma Jewel is the Ratna Sutra, the essence of the Sangha Jewel is Mañjuśrī, Tārā, and the three forms of Vajrapāṇi, and the essence of the Dharma-protecting guardians is Brahmā and Indra, the four Great Kings, and the great leaders of the Yaksha hosts. Thus, based on fourteen different objects of offering, each performs the seven branches, and fourteen sets of seven branches are spoken of. Among them, except for the seven Sugatas, the last part of the other seven branches is done in the form of supplication. Then, the dharani is recited and a bath is performed, then a general offering is made, and the previously accumulated roots of virtue are dedicated to immediate and lasting benefits, then forgiveness is requested, and then the deities are asked to depart. Thus, out of the twenty-two points, most are completely contained in the sutra. The basis of the ritual is: The sutra says: ‘Mañjuśrī, any son or daughter of good family who has faith, who wishes to make offerings to the Tathāgata, should make an image of that Tathāgata. For seven days, they should abide in the upavāsa vows that possess the eight branches of the noble path. They should eat pure food, wash their bodies well, wear clean clothes, and spread various flowers in a clean place, burn various incenses, and decorate the area well with silks, umbrellas, and various banners, with a mind free from defilement, a mind free from turbidity, a mind free from harm, a mind of loving-kindness, and a mind of equanimity.’ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With a mind of compassion and a mind of equality.' This is what was said. Furthermore, it is clearly shown by the repeated statements on how to arrange the basis for the ritual of reciting the 'Ratnakuta Sutra', and especially how to arrange the basis for the ritual of reciting the large and small Dharanis. Blessing the places and so on is shown by the declaration of the pure realms of the seven Tathagatas. Paying homage seven times to the seven Tathagatas is shown in the 'Aspiration of Good Names', 'May my name remain in your mind, and by reciting my name seven times,' which is repeatedly stated. The branch of offering is shown by saying in the 'Good Names', 'If one makes offerings to the Tathagata with great reverence,' and in the 'Jewel Moon', 'One should also make images of the Tathagata, and offer them with flowers, incense, perfumes, garlands, ointments, musical sounds, and lamps,' and by the repeated statements on how to make offerings to common and individual objects. The branch of confessing sins is shown by repeatedly stating the benefits of 'being free from all sins and karmic obscurations,' because the aspect of the benefits that will arise is to turn towards practice, just like in the case of aspirations. The branch of aspiration is clearly shown by the first two of the seven Sugatas making aspirations with the eight benefits of reciting their own names, similarly, the middle four Tathagatas making aspirations with the four benefits of reciting their own names, and the Medicine King making aspirations with the twelve benefits of reciting his own name. Although the two middle branches are not explicitly stated in this sutra, they are considered to be supplemented in accordance with the 'Samantabhadra's Aspiration', because the accumulation of merit through the seven-branch offering is highly praised. The reason for making the teacher Shakyamuni Buddha the object of the seven branches is that he is the speaker of the 'Ratnakuta Sutra' and the speaker of the 'Beryl Light' Dharani. The reason for making the Dharma the object of the seven branches is that when Manjushri asked, 'Bhagavan, in the future, in the latter times, whoever holds this sutra,' from 'those who hold this sutra will not die before their time' to 'no one can take it away, and even if they take it away, they will return it.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
