When the appearance of dread of thoroughly investigating death arises, relatives recite the name of the King of Medicine (Bhaiṣajya-guru, Medicine Buddha) and perform offerings for seven days, etc., until the first, second, third, or seventh stage of the intermediate state (Antarābhava, Bardo) is completed, whichever stage is completed, consciousness enters the previous body and revives. This is because of the blessings of the holy Dharma, so that until consciousness returns, the corpse does not move, decay, etc., and no bad changes occur. Therefore, of these two ways, the former agrees with what is said 'for the sake of the sick person,' and the latter agrees with what is said concerning the stages of the intermediate state, such as 'or seven umbrellas.' Both may occur, because the inclinations and habitual tendencies of sentient beings are inconceivable, and the qualities of the holy Dharma are also inconceivable. The king (Rājā, King) is enthroned from the crown of the head (abhiṣeka, empowerment), and there are two ways of enthronement: non-lineage enthronement and lineage enthronement. The first is when the king of a country dies, monks (bhikṣu, monks) and Brahmins (brāhmaṇa, Brahmins) prepare a precious vase filled with auspicious substances, and on an auspicious date, gather all the villagers, and in the marketplace, attach the precious vase to the trunk of an elephant and let it wander, and whoever's head the precious vase is placed on, that person is enthroned as king, just like a king enjoys a good life. Lineage enthronement does not involve attaching the vase to the elephant's trunk, but rather the monk, Brahmin, or father king places the precious vase filled with auspicious substances on the head of the prince and enthrones him as king. Here, in Tsetang Sanglun's commentary on the Medicine Buddha Sutra (Bhaiṣajyaguru-sūtra-vyākhyāna, Commentary on the Medicine Buddha Sutra), it says: 'Through the power of the Buddha, we have heard the name of the Tathagata King of Lapis Lazuli Light of Medicine (Bhaiṣajyaguru-vaiḍūrya-prabharāja-tathāgata, Medicine Master Buddha), and we will no longer have the fear of going to the lower realms.' According to this, it is clear that the leaders of the yaksha (yakṣa, yaksha) are worldly, because through the power of the Buddha, hearing the name of the King of Medicine, they have obtained the assurance of not going to the lower realms. If they were noble ones, even without hearing the name of the King of Medicine, they should have already obtained the assurance of not going to the lower realms. Moreover, the cycle of existence (saṃsāra, samsara) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, it is said that worldly and transcendental seats should also be arranged, and the 'worldly retinue' refers to these (Dharmapalas, etc.). So, in the case of the Yakshas (gNod sByin), shouldn't the phrase 'assembly of noble ones' be recited? There is no fault in this, because even to non-noble ones, it is appropriate to offer the respectful term 'noble,' just as an earthly king is called a god. Even so, shouldn't it be inappropriate to prostrate to them? That is not the case; it is a great misunderstanding. The statement that after taking refuge in the Buddha, one should not prostrate to other worldly deities is to prevent prostration to the fierce spirits, nagas, and demons, etc., who are relied upon by ignorant people of the world, who have not seen the Buddha, have not heard the Dharma, and have not relied on the Sangha of noble ones. Otherwise, if a Bodhisattva on the path of accumulation in Tushita (dGa' ldan) prostrates to their guru, a Bodhisattva on the path of joining, the vows of refuge would be broken; and when making the three-part torma, it would also be inappropriate to prostrate to the ten directional protectors. The detailed distinctions of these statements will be explained later in the context of dispelling confusion in the ritual. Here, too, I will explain a little. In the 'Supplement to the Three Vows' by Omniscient Lama Sonam Senge (bSod nams seng ge)—'A Good Explanation Illuminating the Three Bases, Paths, and Results—Light of Light,' it says: 'The Yakshas of the Medicine Buddha, etc., if they are worldly independent ones, then all Medicine Buddha rituals will cause the loss of the refuge vow, because of prostrating to and taking refuge in worldly deities. The eight Sugatas mentioned in the Sutra of Peaceful Taming (Zhi 'tshos mdo) are made into Buddhas, and at that time, the true Dharma is added. The remaining refuge Taras, etc., are shown as the bodies of the transcendental and worldly Sangha. Offering prostrations, etc., to the three objects of refuge, actually practicing the six branches, the seventh is the prayer of the sutra itself, combined, is the Medicine Buddha ritual.' The meaning of this is: the twelve great Yaksha generals, etc., in the context of the Medicine Buddha, are not worldly independent ones. If that were the case, then all Medicine Buddha rituals, as a subject, your refuge vow would be lost, because you prostrate to and take refuge in worldly deities. If the sign is not established, then it should be admitted that the Yakshas of the Medicine Buddha are worldly deities. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
